We're getting together a Maryland Meetup, most likely in the Green Ridge State Forest. It's in Allegheny County near Cumberland, about 2 hours west of Baltimore on I-68.

All are invited, not just Marylanders.

The date is TBD now, but MLK weekend seems to work well for everyone, which will be January 17-20.

If you want to hunt, this will be archery season for deer and open season for many small game and birds. Green Ridge SF is open to all hunting.

I'll update this OP with more info as it becomes available. In the meantime, please feel free to comment below. If you can make it, let us know. Different date? Say so. Have an idea for a better location? We'd love to hear it.

Last year we had a great turnout for the winter meetup, and we're hoping to make this one even better.

I know what you mean, I was a den leader from Tigers through bridging into the Boy Scout Troop. And they claim it only takes 1 hour a week...

I can't make January 17-20. Do we want to keep that date or change it?

I think I can be fairly flexible then, but we should probably see what the rest of the gang thinks before changing it.

For deer it's ouch. For small game it's OK.

Some deer have been harvested in Green Ridge State Forest with CWD. You might not want to hunt there...

If we are thinking of moving the date, when are some possible alternatives? If it's earlier, then I'm ok, but if it goes late, I might not make it. Semester starts back up around then.

Any weekend but the 17-20 is good for me.

The 10-11 is a special 2-day anterless deer firearms season. It probably wouldn't be safe to be in Green Ridge then. I've heard some horror stories about being in GR during firearm season.

We may keep it for the 17-20. I can come up during the day Saturday, I just can't spend the night.

I'm gonna keep an eye on this. I'd really like to make it down but have to make sure I can getaway. Is this a placed you've camped or hunted before? If so, what's the small game situation like? The site says squirrel and grouse but I've seen places in the ANF where you could walk all day and not cut a track in fresh snow. Would anybody object to me bringing my dog? He's a decent bird dog and anyone who wants to look for grouse is more than welcome to tag along.

    pacondor,

There seems to be plenty of squirrel. I've only seen a few grouse, but haven't really busted the brush to check the population. If your dog is well behaved, he's welcome. I'll probably have "Zig, the Bushcraft Dog" with me. She has a great time!

I'm new here and always up for a get together. Is there an age limit? Where my Son goes I go or something like that. Actually he got me back into the outdoors and is pretty good for an 11 year old.

No age limit. We've even had a young lady attend the last one. She is under 10, I believe. We are very family friendly!

From what I have heard all deer in GRF are now handled as if with CWD.

Welcome! Gear list: Bacon, POTATOES, and single malt scotch. :4: Seriously, a lot is going to depend on the weather as to what gear.

Age limit is determined by attitude. If they have the right attitude, then, bring them along. My daughter is 8, and my son is 12. Both have humped their own gear on several trips. As for what Scott said, There is no such thing as too much bacon, I'm the only nut that humps a SACK OF POTATOES into the woods, any good spirit is welcome, as long as everyone is responsible, and gear choices are usually the first topic of discussion around the fire. Looking forward to seeing old faces, new faces, and getting some wood burnt!!

BackToBasix, I'm sorry for the earlier humor, we tend to bust on each other a bunch and I was getting my digs in. We will most likely stay on one of the trails that has an Adirondack shelter. A few stay in those and others use hammocks or tents. I plan on doing a "super shelter" to try out. Any of your basic backpacking gear plus cold weather items you personally require will suffice. We all like to bring specialty foods and drinks to share with the group. We don't get rowdy or obnoxious and do frequently have young ones with us and respect that. There will probably be a dog or two also. We hope you can make it and look forward to meeting you.

    Hey All,

I'd like to propose we stay at the Pine Lick Trail shelter like we did last winter. Good spot for winter camping because it is sheltered from the wind and we have plenty of area to pitch lean-tos, tents, and places to hang. Firewood was plentiful last year too. We could reserve site #10 for parking. What say you?

What can go wrong camping with a bunch of guys from the internet? :54: The Pine Lick Trail is nice, but steep. Where I'm proposing to camp has a nice Adirondack shelter with 15 Mile Creek flowing in front and it is adjacent to a 1.5 acre or so field. Hardwoods all around. It made a pretty nice camp. Here is the trip report from last January:

    http://bushcraftusa.com/forum/showt...r-Meet?highlight=2013+winter+meet+green+ridge

Let us know what you are short of after Christmas and maybe we can loan you some stuff to get by.

See post #31 above. It takes in most of it. The big thing is deciding what your sleeping arrangement will be (i.e. lean-to, hammock, in the shelter, tent, etc...). That will determine what gear you'll need. Also, what and how you plan to cook. If there is a snow on, you could use a sled and pack a little heavier "luxury" items like a dutch oven or extra sleeping pads and things. It is a steep trail getting down to the shelter and stuff seems a lot heavier when you have to carry it back up!

Make sure you bring the lotion or you'll get the hose again!

Sorry, I've been in a weird mood lately. Expect the nighttime lows to be in the teens. Make sure you have a sleeping bag rated that low, or a sleeping bag and some blankets to supplement it. Bring warm clothes and food and whatever you need to prepare and cook the food. Bring sharp pointy things. Water will come from the creek so have a way to purify it (filter, tablets, boil, etc).

I have a 16 F sleeping bag I purchased this fall, so with blankets and pads I should be good. Normally I use a hammock, but since I am upgrading I don't have winter stuff for it yet so I will be on the ground or in the shelter.

It looks like I'll just be going for the day on Saturday. If anyone can't stay overnight, but can make it during the day Saturday and wants to ride up with me I'm more than willing to take you. I live in Baltimore and can meet anyone at any of the park and rides along I-70. Just post here or pm me or both if you want a ride.

The cost for the state camping permit it $10 per night for up to 6 people at a site and I think a dollar per person over 6. We should reserve campsite #10 again for parking at the trailhead. We can work that out closer to time and when we have a head count, as to who will do it.

ok missed all this earlier. Several additions this year so as of now it would be santa + 2. in regards to gear; last year I packed in a duffel bag of wool blankets and a bag and a pad. TOO HEAVY. This year I'll be bringing MSS,and pad. Should make the walk out easier. Single malt.
