Wishing a speedy recovery for Skyler! I will check the opening date and group site info at Matthews Arm and post a thread.

OK so it looks as if Matthew's Arm campground opens May 21. I can check on one of group sites for the weekend of May 23-25 or May 30-June1. They may be booked but I can check anyhow.

I checked with reservations and all group sites are booked for the weekend of May 25-27. May 30 - June 1 is available. Site B-89 and B-90 are open. The other option is to get reserved sites next to each other if available depending on the number of people going the group sites are the best value. Group sites are $50.00 a night for 7-25 people and all the way at the back of the park at the trail head. Attached is the link to SNP campgrounds just open Matthews Arm Campground and Map.

I have pics of the group area and when I find them I will post. Watch out for this guy in SNP...I hear the full moon makes him nutty...LOL

Re: fishing - the Shenandoah River is not far and has really good trout, smallmouth, and catfish. The campground is very close to a large set of waterfalls, and I seem to recall that stream (tributary to the Shenandoah) having trout. I know other streams in the area do.

May 25-27 is Memorial Day weekend. You don't want to be anywhere near the SNP and Skyline Drive then. The next weekend will be slightly better but not great (crowds).

I guess I have heard the trout fishing is good but I don't fish so I couldn't tell ya where to go and I certainly don't mess with fish during bear season.
