If 41C is the big island. Ultra has already called it and he has the maximum legal number of campers already on it. Ben Piersma and I have dibs the small island (37C) for our families.

Guys, the sites are first come, first serve. I can’t even guarantee I’ll be on the big island if some unknown folk are there.

I will be heading out early that week to get set up...

The "dibs" was mostly in jest. We don't care where we end up.

The Echo-7 knife, by Dogwood Custom Knives and designed by Dan Eastland. One or two will be up to giveaway at the Michigan Bushcraft Spring Gathering 2018 on May 4-6 at Lumberman’s Monument on Cooke Pond, AuSable River. All the details can be found at www.michiganbushcraft.com.

It really is. It is one of my personal favorite knives.

Dan Eastland was an apprentice of Andy Roy (of Fiddleback Forge) until he finished the program and went on to start his own, successful knife company Dogwood Custom Knives. He is a really good guy and good friend.

As a side note, make sure to pick up a copy of the November issue of KI (coming out in the beginning of September) to learn more about Dan and Dogwood Custom Knives. We will covering his new Puukko, it is really nice. Tim Stetzer will be doing the article and he does a great job.

Winner? you mean survivor. Don't think anybody "Wins" at naked and afraid. I don't see it a competition. What did she "Win" if she won? What season?

It’s true. I’ve learned the proper description is ‘survivor.’

Semantics aside, she’s coming to the event so she’s a winner in my book.

Thanks, Foulwind, for confirming what you are with that post.

@Ultra gave me a tour of Cooke Pond on Friday. The short version, it's gorgeous. Now, a little longer version to give you guys an idea of the layout, because I had no idea going in and would have liked this spelled out for me. :)

Pine Acres boat launch is at the west end of the pond next to Five Channels Dam on M-65. Just south of Pine Acres is River Rd, which runs along the south shore of Cooke Pond. On River Rd, you can reach Iargo Springs, Canoers Memorial, Lumberman's Monument, and lastly, Sawmill Point by taking Cooke Dam Rd. The springs, memorial, and Lumberman's are all approximately a mile from each other. Sandwiched between River Rd and Cooke Pond is the High Country Pathway, which also connects all of the locations (so you can either drive or walk to the places). Sites 32-36 are directly across the pond from Canoers Memorial, sites 38-41 across from Lumberman's Monument. Sawmill Point sites 42-57 are accessible by vehicle from the south side of the Pond.

There is also one more place that is now available for us to camp at, right at Lumberman's Monument! The Rangers have given us their blessing to camp there even though it won't be open to the public with the condition that we do not use hammocks and help to clean up the sites. They won't have running water, and the latrines won't be ready at that time, but there's a river for water, and a restroom at the visitor center if you can't use the woods. Parking will be at the visitor center, just pack your stuff in.

What does this all mean? There are options, depending on how hardcore you want to be, and how close to your fellow bushcrafters you'd like to stay...

If you want to canoe in, drop in at Pine Acres and paddle to one of the sites in the pond. If you want to park in a lot but walk to a site, go to the Lumberman's campground. If you want to drive into a site, go to Sawmill Point. If you want to disperse camp, there is national forest between Lumberman's and Sawmill Point (park at Lumberman's). You can backpack dispersed camp anywhere on National Forest land so long as you're at least 200ft from water and 150ft from roads and trails. If you want to be on the water, you'll have to use a primitive site.

I'm camping at Lumberman's for the weekend to hold the community fire at the site closest to the pavilion. You're welcome to stop in to brew some coffee, warm up a meal and swap lies if you're in the area. I might be out sightseeing too, but that's where I'll return to.

I hope this has given you all a little more description on the area.

    -Tim

Stealing that to post for people who were curious about locations. I'm not worried really about where to camp. Only where the most people are. Cause the most people means the most fun. I just wonder if Melissa will be camping too.

In my mind, the canoers will be out on the pond and paddle over to the monument to hang out during the day, so the monument will be "the place to be", if you will.

As for Melissa... hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm pretty sure she already has a boyfriend. :18:

    Exactly.

And the hikers can hike in from east or west via the High Banks Trail. The horseback riders can even ride in via the Shore to Shore Trail. And RV’s have options from back country sites to a 1 mile long bordering on the AuSable river, 660 site campground with full campground amenities just 5 miles away, if that’s what some one wants to do.

It’s all there. Everything anyone could want in an outdoor weekend experience/adventure is there. All except you that is and the people you can reach out to and bring along on the adventure. They’re not there...

    Yet!

    (An FYI to everyone)

At Lumberman’s, the camping there will only be allowed in the adjoining Monument Campground. There is no camping allowed on the Lumberman’s Monument Visitor Center grounds.

Not worried about that. More interested in if she's going to camp because she's the winner of naked and afraid. Surely she would be interested in a weekend in the woods.

No hammock rule only applies to the Monument Campground. Hammocks are fine at backcountry and dispersed camps.

I'll see about driving up for the day, I'm just down in Bay City and will likely be at my cottage/cabin in Au Gres that weekend anyhow. This would be lots of fun.

For those of us that have never met one another, we should have a BCUSA meet and greet or something as an aside.

Ben, as a customer and fellow outdoors-dude, I appreciate that you're kidding.. you are kidding , RIGHT?! lol.

Oh wait... afraid TO BE naked...I thought you said you would be naked AND afraid. That I think, will be too much and might drive people to the local bar instead.

Indeed, I'll have the campsite closest to the pavilion at Lumberman's Monument with the intention of keeping the community fire going. You guys are welcome to stop by and hang out all you want. Looks like Jim will be helping me man it as well!

I'll be truck camping with my cat. I know there's a massive sand dune which means a load of wind, is there any place close to that dune which has a nice view? Someplace a truck could drive up to.

No BCUSA flags in my possession.

Besides, this is a Michigan Bushcraft event put on by www.michiganbushcraft.com BCUSA isn’t sponsoring us or offering any support and, though this event is mentioned in their forums, it’s also mentioned on many sites all around the internet.

So, at this event, look for the Michigan Bushcraft patches, t-shirts and, now, some form of signage that I’ll do my best to come up with as I have every right to create signage under that name and no rights to use the BCUSA moniker.

Well I was only half serious, mostly facetious. I realize it's not an official BCUSA event, so I wouldn't have expect anyone to essentially rebrand the main event with a different organizations' banner and name.

I mentioned it only because I've never met any of you in person and identifying fellow forum members would be simpler with a basic yard sign or something.

I have a black truck with a black topper, there will be a tarp coming off it, I'll most likely be staying at Sawmill Point. Other than that, I've met most of these guys and you can kinda just tell. Like there's a non detailed give that this person is from the forum. For me it's my bumper sticker. But we could technically post a picture of our ride to help if that's needed. I'd love to see your flashlight collection by the way. Could test their distance on Sawmill Point, off the sand dune cliff thing.

With that part said. I'M GOING CRAZY AND MENTAL WAITING FOR THIS!!! I think it's cause this month's going buy slow and next month I'm doing a lot of work on the truck for the trip. Making it cat compatible, a platform for me, able to equip tarps, and just making it something I love. If I had the gas money, I'd take the trip sooner. I might leave a day early and take my time getting there. Sense my tent is the truck, I don't mind getting there at night a day before. I did look into the area a little and it seems these spots get a lot of heavy traffic with campers and the such. Something tells me it'll be packed before we get there. Also a few others and I have posted this everywhere and anywhere. So there will be some people attending which aren't on the forum.

Quick Question. Doing some research and not really seeing Sawmill Point on the maps. The only Sawmill Point I'm seeing is Sawmill Point Boat Launch which is at the bottom of the massive sand dune cliff thing. I'm looking for a spot on top of it. Is that still Sawmill? I'm just trying to judge where it is on the map so I can find it and plan accordingly.

The campsites at Sawmill Point flank the launch to either side as this pic of my map shows.

more of a pipedream, but would an international visitor be allowed?
is Detroit the nearest/best international airport?
car rent the best/only way to travel up?

I'm sure @Ultra wouldn't mind this at all. Personally I think it's only called "Michigan Bushcraft" on the site because of where it's based. I think everyone's welcome. Think that's why we posted it to the main events page of the forum as well. Regarding airports, the MBS International Airport is the closest I think.

I feel like I've run around with ultra enough to speak on this one, you're absolutely welcome! There are other canadians that were discussing making the trip as well. This is meant to be an inclusive event, something thatcan being people together from all over. MBS would be the closest international airport. From there, you'd need to rent a car.

@CharClothed Sawmill Point is the only location where you'll be able to car camp. With that being said, I don't think it'll be nearas busy as you're expecting, and the sites on the west side of the point have an awesome view.

The event is open to all. Even thinking about a prize for the person who traveled furthest. :)

    Be there.
