Only, partially. Been there numerous times over the last 25 years. Was there 3 years ago would not go back until drug situation is resolved. You have to be wary of the crooks and the government in Mexico. Good luck

don't get all spooked about stuff, vultures pick up on that energy, it draws them... relax, be friendly, don't act entitled or like a hero, you're a welcome guest helping out, don't go in with a combat / survival attitude... plus one for leaving the expensive pack at home.. go to the thrift store and pick up some crappy day pack and some second hand clothes, you don't need anything technical... learn even a bit of Spanish, you've got time, even a day or two (fluencia has great online learning). keep your day's spending money handy, keep a giveaway wallet or two with a bit of cash and non critical ID, just let it go if it ever comes to that. I wouldn't take anything more than a simple jackknife or a crappy multitool...don't hang out with machos.. be humble, learn stuff, help out with the dirty work... expect to get sick, shit happens... Since you're coming at this from a Christian perspective, maybe as a thought experiment think about how jesus would probably walk into this..empty hands, open heart, not attached to much stuff....see how much of your stuff you can give away down there, maybe bring a few extra little things for the kids..have so much fun ok? good luck

Great advice, I picked up a cheapo bag instead, highly rated on Amazon tho. When I get the things I bought I'll do a thread. And thank you for the advice, that's all what I had in mind. I'm bringing my grubby clothes I use for work. I'm not going there looking like a tourist as much as I can help it.

No filter will work for viruses as they are too small (smaller that 0.01 used in the best filters) boiling or chemical treatment (and possibly solar but I am not sure) is the only way to treat for viruses.

my brother-in-law, who lived in and traveled all over mexico for many years while in charge of mexico missions for a large baptist denomination, said morelos has had its share of violence in the past, but he does not recall any recent issues. he said he is sure you will meet many wonderful people ...

    UNESCO World Heritage Site ....

So from what I found on Wikipedia, it is a UNESCO world heritage location due to archaeological finds, and the cities' history. Does your brother in law happen to know about UN presence in areas like this? Do they police it? This is all getting interesting!!! Any tips on hiking the volcano near that city?

Water will be important so make sure you have enough purification tablets and I would recomend buying a sawyer water filter. You cannot drink water in Mexico unless it is bottled!!! You wont be able to find regular equipment like you are used to in the US, but there are a few street vendors that probably sell some local made knives. Get all your shots and make sure you have a well stocked first aid kit.

I have been thinking my statement over, and over a few weeks it occurred to me that it isn't about nationalism. It's about God. I have some tendencies on immigration that are right learning, but, at a practical standpoint, if their country was habitable, maybe many wouldn't have to leave. Helping make that happen doesn't just help Mexicans it helps all of us. Thanks for the likes tho guys. They boost my tiny ego quite a bit!
