For a few years now, I have been Gatekeeper for the "Hall of Mythological Beings." The Hall admits those who have started a fire with hand drill friction fire.

For those who have started a fire with traditional flint and steel, perhaps they should be declared "Man of Steel" or "Woman of Steel."

What say you? Who shall be the one to bestow the honors?

This was previously mentioned (by me) in this thread:

"This is my striker. There are many like it but this one is mine. My striker is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me my striker is useless. Without my striker I am useless. I must strike my flint rock true. I must make fire before cold, thirst, and hunger overtake me. I will. Before Ray Mears I swear this Creed. My striker and myself will preserve my life. So be it. Until there is fire. Amen"

I am so humbled and flattered. I have neglected my steel and you, my tribe, for far too long. Sadly, I am not reliable enough to accept such an important position as Gatekeeper but I do vow to resume regular practice today and to make a campfire ASAP. I love you guys!!

Vow honoured today. AH!!! That's. SO. MUCH. BETTER!! :D :D :D

Ray Mears HBC Striker (Thank you Cousin @DavidJAFO!) and a really cool rock from @CivilizationDropout (Thank you!) And a and a tin full of stuff.
    P9124231.JPG

Cool rock and charred hemp rope.
    P9124232.JPG P9124239.JPG P9124243.JPG

    I love this rock!!
    P9124244.JPG

Into the tin it went with white birch bark, fatwood shavings, cattail and some more charred hemp rope. I rescued a tampon, jute twine, jute rope, a bunch of amadou, more birch bark and a candle stub from the tin before I added the glowing ember. ;)
    P9124248.JPG

I burnt a hole in my brand new sock while blowing the glowing char to flame. :/ #reasonswhywedontarguewiththefirebans #mixedblessings
    P9124255.JPG

    It smelled so good!
    P9124261.JPG

I fluffed it up a bit and... Poof!
    P9124266.JPG

Smothered and ready for next time! Just what the doctor ordered! :D :D :D

I usually just call it my "HBC striker" but when we have to bear down, I call him "Henry". I don't know why. He's just "Henry". LOL!!

Well, considering where @bacpacjac is, it could very well be an "Henri".

This is my other striker. I call it Jacob's Striker, because @Jacob made. :)

In keeping with my Oath, we practiced a little yesterday after I got the kiddos off to school, with some Amadou and a piece of Black English Flint. The fluffy Amadou took a spark easily but it was a challenge to get my tinder bundle to go. I had some Kapok, Cattail, White and Silver Birch bark, some Chaga, a bit a Amadou fluff, and probably so other dust in the bottom of the tin. Not having my morning caffeine yet,I decided to use it and was too lazy to process anything else. Price paid. All I got was smoulder until a bit of White Birch finally caught. The flame didn't last very long though. I was still impatient, and I killed it by trying to add some damp inner cedar bark, hoping to partially char it. I really need to practice more and get back into good habits. I need to start a new perpetual natural char tin too, but that's a story for a different thread. ;)

    P9144353.JPG

It was looking and smelling good, until I smothered it. Patience, Jacqui. Lesson learned and to be applied today. :)

I'm not sure if we ever elected a new Gate Keeper, so I hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes, but let's all welcome @Silvuhboolit AND HIS SON to the Mighty Men and Women of Steel! Way to go, guys!! https://bushcraftusa.com/forum/threads/he-did-it-first-flint-and-steel-fire.231611/

Go get him, @Silvuhboolit, hold your strikers in your left hands and make this oath aloud and you shall both be granted a lifetime membership to this rocking group! :) Naming your striker will only strengthen your bond. May your powers grow together in perpetual practice and patience!

Wikipedia..
“Raymond Paul Mears is an English woodsman, instructor, businessman, author and TV presenter. His TV appearances cover bushcraft and survival techniques....”

Ah. It’s an English thing I see. Well, that explains a lot!
