I had cervical disc surgery in December, it's been over 3 months now and even though the pain has subsided tremendously, recovery seems slow. I seem to be having difficulty regaining full use of my right hand, even with PT 3 days a week and exercises at home.

I know the Lord never lets us suffer more than we can handle, but it is tuff.

I have my family and friends praying, but there is no such thing as too many prayer partners.

    Thanks guys (and girls)!

    Jon

Salt and smoke @grandpa p. I myself am sensitive to the hand issues right now, maybe not on your level but enough to sympathize. Get well brother.

Prayers for you. I spent almost two years in PT. It seems to plateau and then resume again. At least it did for me. Keep at it and try not to get frustrated. I know it's hard. joe

I have suffered over half my life with back problems. I had a lower back surgery in my early 20's. For me the more active I am the better I feel. I currently have a severely herniated disc. Right now I can tolerate the pain. I will hold out for another surgery as long as I can. It is all about keeping moving for me right now. If I lay around too much I am miserable. Prayers sent for you.

Prayers offered. As a word of encouragement, remember what the Lord told Paul when he prayed for relief from his thorn in the flesh - "Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." (2Corinthians 12:8f). As my age mounts, in spite of increasing disabilities, I enjoy getting out and doing as much as I can with determination and perseverance.

My brother and I had an interesting conversation about that old saying "God doesn't give us more than we can handle" and he and I agreed to add a couple more words to it.

Thought you might enjoy hearing the new version:

"God doesn't give us more than we can handle with His help"

I'm thinking those last three words made me rethink a lot about a lot of things.

I'll be happy to ask in my prayers for you to mend.

Might spend some time yourself asking Him what He wants you to do and listen to that also. He has a plan, we gotta listen, sometimes careful.

    Hope things mend for ya

    Jim

I know He has a plan for me and I seek His counsel daily. But... sometimes I forget to clean the wax out of my spiritual ears.

Prayers sent, I know where you're coming from and empathize with what you're feeling. Please don't get discouraged (it can be easy when progress is slow) try a gratitude list each day. Life doesn't seem so bad when you inventory all your blessings. I am only a month into PT and the Drs have decided that a second PRP shot would be helpful, so this Friday will be my second followed by more PT (I hate PT) I am not progressing as fast as I'd like, but I am progressing and consider that a blessing among many! I'll keep you in my prayers, chin up dude!

UPDATE: Another good day!!! No pain or discouragement. My wife suggested an outing to the Made In America Store about 20 miles away. It's an interesting place and they had to build a bigger bldg. Had lunch and came home. The Cavalier is laying on my lap trying to get me to go to bed.
    Life is sweet.
Tomorrow is back to PT and it does seem to be getting a little easier. 3 days a week is gettin' old.

@grandpa p I can relate very closely to your situation as I am in a similar position. I had a triple ACDF surgery in Dec as well. They didn't assign PT and my Surgeon retired suddenly last month. Prayers going up for continued healing and peace. I would second @southron with the addition of the three words at the end of the common platitude, "God doesn't give us more than we can handle, with His help! That has been my experience and for anyone I know who has truly experienced great suffering they tend to agree.

Dood, thanks for your prayers. Things are going well according to my surgeon. After 30 PT sessions over 12 weeks, I don't have to go back anymore. My right hand dexterity, due to nerve damage, isn't back to normal but Doc says that nerve healing could take 2 years. I am up to 30# lifting so my oldest son has offered to load and unload my my 40+# canoe. Several blessings thru this all: severe pain is gone; I'm learning patience; learned what great prayer warriors my family and friends are (including those here that I have yet to meet); been given an opportunity to share God's grace thru this to my neighbors (and I ain't no preacher).

I just read your post update and will continue to keep you and your family on my prayer list.

    Jon

BTW: My Dad was a Charles Spurgeon reader and quoted him often so you are in good company.

Prayers sent sir. NKJV Titus 2:2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience.
I too have trouble with the "patience" portion.

I appreciate your prayers. And for me there was a huge amount of relief immediately. Pain in my right shoulder and arm was gone and even in a drug addled state in recovery I could immediately tell a difference in hand strength. I had no idea how much I had really lost. I still have some issues (muscle spasms in my neck) and hand strength too. And my Surgeon told me 18 months to 2 years for the nerves to completely heal. I am watching what I lift to a degree, but I am motivated to do some low intensity reinsurance and training and stretching. My mobility and flexibility are the pits! But that's not the surgery, that's me being lazy! Thanks again Jon!
