The next field day will be April 30th. Freetown State Forest. 8:00AM to ??. Same format as usual, I’ll supply the main course. I’ll post classes as the date approaches. Anyone wanting to teach let me know.

I’ll do a fly tying class both how to tie at a bench and in the field with improvised equipment.

Post up if you plan to attend.

    Hope to see you there!

I have been wanting to do a meet-up for quite some time.
If I am off of work I will be there. Between rotation and mandates, who knows.
Two weeks out I will have a better idea. If interested, I can do some medical class of sorts.

    Classes so far:

SwampYankee 64: Will do a class land navigation and fire craft. I’d suggest bringing a compass if you have one.

Medic 17: Will do a class on first aid if he can attend

Werewolf won: Will do a class on fly tying.

Kind of early to talk about what will be on the menu, but there's a really good chance of having some slow roasted wild boar. :32:

I received notification last night of something that might take place on the 23rd and I will have to attend, if so I am almost certainly going be away most of the day. Unfortunately I will not know for certain until one week before the meet.

We can either move the day now or take a chance that I will not be called to serve, or have the meet without me. Let me know.

It's far enough off to be able to move the date, my suggestion would be to some time between the last week of April and mid May, but I'm open to any date that fits.

I moved the date to the 30th.

I may or may not have had to attend a meeting on the original date ; but they were only giving me a week’s notice either way. This way I’m sure there will be no conflicts.

Spoke with a guy in town this AM who breeds rabbits--giants not food ones--but I imagine the process is the same--just try not to drool when talking with him about them :D

I'm going to see if I can get him to come and talk about raising them. They are a good source of protein for serious end of days type prep.

I plan to have a couple of "give away's/prizes". I would like to do one for the LandNav and another for Firecraft. The One Stick Fire challenge seemed to go over well the last time, so I think that might be a go again at this meet. I'll provide the materials, there are a cpl fire pits in the ajoining site and the other one in ours, so I think we can have 3 contestants. If we have more than 3 interested, I would suggest we do a number draw and numbers 1-3 compete. Fire craft will probably be basics:, fero rod, flint and steel, natural tinders locally available.

Edit: I would like to add one other hip pocket class, Knots. Just some basic bush knots that I have found useful, nothing crazy

I just updated the list. Sorry it took so long. Between a fall down a flight of stairs resulting in a head injury that has really effected my memory more than I’d like to admit, another episode with my back, and this rude cold I cannot shake, I’ve really been messed up the last few weeks.

Little over a month out now folks. I ran into Nemasket today in the grocery store, and it gave me a little kick in the pants to get my land nav stuff squared away. I took a ride over to the State Forest this afternoon and did a little class prep. I marked out a 50 meter pace count course. Hopefully the rocks will still be in the same place when we meet. Just incase I will bring a tape to mark it out again, it'll probably go faster with a couple people doing it too haha. I also laid out 2 short nav courses. These are not complex at all, but if anyone wants to try them out, they will let you work on the basic skills needed for navigating. Along with the courses, I shot a bunch of azimuths at different things around the meet site so that people can practice that. The map that I have of the area is fairly old, but there are structures on it that are still inplace today, so we will be able to demo a resection in order to locate yourself on a map and we can also do some "terrain association" using the hardball roads. I will be bringing a lensatic and a base plate compass, but if you have your own compass I recommend bringing it should you be interested in participating in the class. A compass isn't going to be "required" for the class itself, but I will only have 2 loners for the prac app portion. You don't have to go crazy buying a compass either. A very serviceable base plate compass(the rectangular clear plastic ones) can be had for around $20. I feel Brunton, Silva and Suunto are all very good names.

I have 3 pieces of wood for the "one stick fire" demo/competition. I think that they can be halved inorder for 6 to participate, but we'll see if we have 3 takers first. I am thinking that 2 tools will be allowed for the competition. Ax/hatchet & knife, saw & knife, ax&saw etc... Fires must be started with a firesteel, and all prep materials INCLUDING tinder shall come from the "one stick". Type of wood will be a mystery until the meet, however I can assure you that all three sections came from the same tree, were quite dry when collected, and are under cover in my shed until the meet so they will be ready to go and no one will have an advantage.

Lastly, I would like to do some knot work. I will provide 4 "kits" containing two 3' or 4' lengths of paracord, if more than 4 people want to participate that is great, they will just have to BYOP. The pieces will be of two different colors so that for the joining knots folks will be able to see what they are doing better. I haven't settled on the exact knots yet, but I think there will be between 8 and 10, and we'll do square, round and diagonal lashing. I will have a couple of poles to practice on, but I won't be able to provide enough for everyone to have their own setup. If anyone wants to bring 3 saplings of about thumb thickness or a little more we can make roycroft pack frames. Length of the saplings should be 2@ armpit to fingertip and 1@ inside of elbow to fingertip. See everyone in a few weeks.

I don't think what we will be having for lunch has been nailed down yet, I'll get together with ww-1 as the meets gets closer, but I'm sure it will be well covered.
For my part I'm still planning on making a Wild Boar Roast and probably some oven roasted potatoes (no oregano :58:) in the seasonings.
Just to be on the safe side, I'd say pack what ever snacks, tea, or coffee you might need during the morning and after lunch, but there's usually enough pot luck stuff that gets donated I doubt anyone will walk away hungry, just go easy on Rick's sugar bombs if you want to avoid a sugar rush. ;)

Really hoping you can make it. :dblthumb:
