Getting close now. Looks like we will not have snow to contend with at least. It was touch and go for a while :D The park is a mess, winter was hard on the trees.

Might be a good opportunity to find some downed burls or fat wood or something. Are they okay with you harvesting stuff like that from downed limbs?

You never know, it depends on the ranger on duty the day of the meet. They have run the range of dig foxholes if you want to how dare you light a fire in the state approved fire ring. Being that they have more trees on the ground than standing they might welcome all the help we can offer, or they might tell us to stay on the blacktop.

LOL they have so many naked witches and warlocks that visit there on a regular basis that threat would not have them thinking twice.

I just got back from our first meet of the season, we were blessed yet again with a fine day, the weather forecast all week called for 60~100% rain, it was overcast but not a drop fell.
Surprisingly we had a good turnout considering the weather forecast, as usual everyone seemed to have a good time, this meet was more laid back than usual, Rick gave a spoon carving instructional and Jimmy T demonstrated several ways to set up a tarp shelter and the tying and use of shelter handy knots.
Jon and Jimmy kept more than a few of us looking up with their turkey calls, and there was a lot of catching up talk among each of us, again, as usual the food was great as well as plentiful, just about everyone contributed something and it was very much appreciated.
It's about this time when someone gives thanks to those who contributed to making these events special, there's werewolf won of course for being the originator many years ago and who has hosted them ever since, but next in line for a big thanks is all of you guys and gals that attend, those who share their skills and their friendship, without you folks and your contributions days like today wouldn't happen.

It was a nice day after all. JimmyT talked about a few tarp setups using the BCUSA 10 x 10 tarp, We tied up some nets with Civilizationdropout, Rickpete put on a spoon carving demo, and I helped some folks learn to talk turkey and went over some basics of sub caliber inserts.
Cheapeats displayed some of his own made fireplace cooking irons, really nice stuff, all around!

Food was awesome as always with baked cookies and cakes, fire side beans, cold mac salad, and dogs and burgers off the grill flipped with a field made turner :D

I practiced my one match fire making and did indeed only use one match to get and keep one going all day.

The little round tin of homemade mix is fast becoming a favorite of mine. It is made with a package of store brand jerky chopped into fine chunks, mixed with chunks of bittersweet chocolate, and various seeds and nuts. In this case pumpkin seeds, walnuts, and sunflower kernels. But any nuts and seeds work fine.

Thanks, guys, for another great gathering!

I want to especially thank Rick for a great lesson on spoon carving. It was exactly what I was hoping for.
