We were just informed by a park/forest ranger that we need to vacate by 11:00 AM. (Not a problem for us because we are already scheduled to leave at 11:00 AM today).

State budget was not approved, so it will remain this way until it is passed.

Goto the state's website for additional information related to the closings.

We just about had the same thing happen here in Washington. But they passed something in the 11th hour that raises all sorts of taxes.... Wonderful.

If the state does not have money to "maintain" -- (I think our Good Lord makes the trees grow.) -- a stand of trees, it must be abandoned or unimproved property. They should lose their claim to the land... or my "tomahawk improvements" should be just as legitimate.

Maine State government also shut down as of last night (midnight) only essential emergency services in operation AND State Parks remain open, got to keep those outah state tourist dollars coming in regardless.

Now that is a sure sign of some intelligence. At least they think about the big picture.

P.s., had a few people, who drove in vehicles with out of state plates, waiting in the park office lot when we returned the key for the cabin. I'm sure they're annoyed at the very least.

BTW: I wonder how campsite / cabin refunds help the state budgets.

So stupid..and the governor is given a private house on Island Beach State Park that he is still going to use despite all the families turned around on their big plans.

Do you think the state of New Jersey will give money back.... haha never we are all just screwed. I'm glad that we have plans to move out of this hole. It's a great place if you like having your freedom trampled by the state government. Now with the "park police" being part of the state police we now have fully armed swat looking troopers storming campsites kicking good tax paying citizens out of land that is maintained on our dime!!!!

NJ sucks and frankly I haven't ever heard anyone say otherwise. Yes we have nice beaches, surrounded by craptastic casinos in towns where you might not want to walk down the street after dark. We pay at every bridge out of the state, we pay a sh$# ton in taxes, have to ask permission to do everything and anything involving a firearm (and when you do you are treated as a criminal) and all for what? So they can close the parks and throw a temper tantrum when they don't get what they want? Texas here I come!!!!!!

The sign attached to the tree kinda says it all right there. Sorry, the light of the sun is dark due to budget cuts.

Not in those exact words but I'm frustrated like everyone else impacted in a negative way. "Like" Texas. Wish you the best there :) Economy is booming, people are "down to earth", and COL is reasonable.

Blatant evidence of double standards by those who embrace a "holier than thou" attitude.

We have a disturbing trend in our country with a minority of our elected officials conducting government affairs like they were dubbed kings and queens. A behind the scenes form of lawlessness.

The only way to change things is by voting. I haven't missed an election since 1972. But it is apparently clear that the majority doesn't vote like I do, because the less than desirable politicians keep getting reelected. Lets vote them out. Just my $.02. joe

Christie is the best vote I have cast in this state. He vetoed all the nonsense gun laws that crossed his desk since he has been in. He also ran on balancing a buget and when things shutdown due to cuts we all cry. Cant have it both ways.

No matter who is elected into a government office I just want the statutes rewritten so state services for parks and forests are "forever available" for the "forever wild". I was part of the political machine in the state for a few years a long time ago, so I experienced in real time the tactics used in order to start a public outcry for political gains. The money is always there in most cases - it's a matter of how it's disbursed.

When government agencies are starved of money the first thing they do is kick the taxpayers/voters in the nuts. Whatever service they are supposed to be providing to us, they immediately shut it down. Then we're supposed to clamor for our representatives to restore the money. I think something like this happened a few years ago with national parks and forests when the federal govt hit their debt limit and the Tea Party faction wouldn't budge. It didn't take long before the money valve was turned back on.

Point to ponder. Do we receive a notice from the government informing us about them halting the collection of taxes during a shutdown? Or when payments for capital improvements are paid in full, do they reduce our taxes?

The collection of taxes is always ongoing, and when one capital improvement project is complete they vote on approval of another to justify the tax collection, same or an increase, to pacify the financial sector, all in the name of the "public good". Really?!!!

In a nutshell, all visitors to the New Jersey Parks -n- Forests were told to vacate by 11:00 AM yesterday until a budget is approved.

Somehow, all of the tax, registration, and fee monies, that were already paid to the treasury for parks and forests usage, has evaporated and at this moment is evaporating. Go figure!

Aren't there places in NJ where you can just park your car, get out, grab your backpack and bushwhack thru the back country? Not campgrounds or picnic areas, or official recreation sites. Just wild country?

Yep there are, I don't have a need for the public regions as I have access to an entire mountain, but perhaps someone else can give input who use the public grounds and such.

No not technically, most if not all state land requires some form of official campsite. All other land is privately owned so that is a no go. Welcome to New Jersey, for only $1300 a month you to can have no rights or freedoms.

NJ actually has lots of open space including state forest, wildlife management areas and parks but no national forest or blm land that allows free camping. There are a few private campgrounds and county run campgrounds that of course remain open.

The only free camping I'm aware of would be at the delaware water gap on national parkland at designated sites.

Luckily we have been able to avoid it this weekend by hitting county parks but I'm more worried come next weekend. My daughter has her driver's test on Friday and we are taking 13 people on a camping trip. Trying to find a free drive up campsite with bathroom facilitates is just not happening.

I know its still a week away but according to reports they are in the long haul over this and can see it lasting at minimum a week.

It would be nice if there was some non state owned land where camping was allowed around here.

Check out the Open Space Map link that @GreenFrog posted. An option is to check PA's campsites. French Creek State Park is a nice place, but I'm guessing it is a long drive for you.

Alighty well that was easy and nice. I was able to cancel our 3 reservations today for our getaway on Friday the 7 thru 9 with zero penalties. Reserve America informed me that there is not set procedure but that they understand the worry and will issue a refund with no penalty so that the funds are freed up for a different trip.

He also said the refunds are processed within 3 to 5 business days and if anyone who made reservations but had to leave early or had them canceled due not see their refund to call and they will make sure it is processed.

So I spoke with our friends that we were taking and the decision was made to wait to postpone until Sept due to work and family issues. Now I am free to find anyplace with in 3 hours to go with just my hubby and kids. Now to find a new place.

I agree. Money is being lost. A sad state of affairs when the revenue intake services are closed. No common sense at all - just chest pounding and "George of the Jungle" cries. Really sick :(

That's what we were thinking or trying thunder swamp again. I have both a pa and nj fishing license so an area to fish would be nice. My kids want to swim cause it's getting down right hot lately.

Whelp, I circumnavigated Hacklebarney Park today on the motorcycle. The main gate is closed with a notice posted. It did not stop about 10 cars from both blocking the gate and parking along the road, many in front of a private residence.

I am all for fighting the power, but thats just dumb.

All of the hunters parking lots on the back side of the park are not gated, nor have they been posted with the same notice. Just saying.
