    Love mine!

Its good for a day pack and great for an overnighter. The extended straps from Amazon are a must though.

Still Old School I don't like Nylon
I have the non-waxed Duluth Rucksack
If it looks like rain I have a plastic bag that I got in England free with a hiking magazine , it is all patched up with duct tape but still keeps the water out.
I had the earlier model Bean pack with the sheep skin shoulder straps but I think I traded it off because it was made in China.

That'll be a nice project. Please post some pictures of the finished product, I'd like to see that.

Edit: I was super excited when I ended up getting this pack for Christmas! First impression is that the construction looks super solid. Now I jus need to get out and use it lol.

I have one of these as well and I love it. Anyone ever thought of waterproofing it in some way? Any suggestions on how?

Also, does anyone find that the straps on the bottom of the bag are a bit short?

I was looking at Ebay for a used model.. Strangely enough, many of the used packs are selling for very close to (if not MORE THAN) retail. Guess I'll wait for another LLBEAN sale.

Anyone feel that these are too large for a daypack?

@Watcher of the Woods... the bigger it is, the more you will want to fill it up. I like it for a daypack if I am going for a whole day, but it does carry well even if it is not fully loaded. Sooo0, no. I do not feel like it is too large.

Anyone have a picture of themselves wearing it? It says it's 33L... I have a 36L Osprey pack that I use for backpacking, but it seems huge compared to this.

@Panzer has good video on it:

At the end, he puts it on and you can see it in profile while he is walking.

I feel the same, for me this is perfect for a day pack, urban tested only for now, but I leave the house with a chunk of edc. As it's winter now I have one side pocket loaded with gloves, hat and foot spikes, the other a hair brush, hair oil and wooden comb (deciding between them yet) also a small tub of coconut oil for lips etc. the middle pocket I have werthers originals and halls soothers for my throat as it's been rough in the cold weather, plus a 30,000 mah battery and cable for phone if needs be. The bulk normally only carries a shemagh/scarf and a 1.5l glass water bottle. Extra shirt and trousers or base layer longjons.
It tends to fill up quickly during the day though, with food or other aquirements from cds (currently collecting dead ones for a project so collect these from people often) or carrying other things to and from work etc.
I haven't filled it more than a few times and thats mostly with food shopping.

Love my nylon LL Bean Continental Ruck. Bean says it is waxed nylon. Canvas was too much heavier and more $$.

I just bought a canvas one from fellow member LJHfrstr here and would like to know about the amazon straps that have been mentioned here. Anyone have a precise name for them or link please?

Dang, I've been looking for a pack just like this; I'm sold. Anyone with experience know when or how often L.L. Bean puts it on sale? I might just go ahead and buy it if I have to wait for next Christmas before the price drops.

I was looking at them just last week or so and they had a 25% off going on! Not sure if it is still active though!

EDIT: Just checked their web page and don't see the sale code listed anymore! They had the code to use right on their page stating sale!

    Wait.

Easter is about a month away. They should have some kind of spring sale in the next few weeks.

25% is about the best I've seen. 20% is still worth it.

The polyester one is the best buy. I like the tan/khaki for Bushcraft. I also like the waxed canvas version. The green is darker than is shown in the photos--I think it looks better.

I just bought a waxed canvas one before Bean changed it policies. I don't know, it maybe the last purchase I make from them. I view the changing of their 100 year old Lifetime Guarantee as a breach of trust with their longtime customers. I already did not make two purchases that I normally would have made.

    I still like the packs.

@Harper Cool, waiting till Easter sounds like good advice. I definitely want the synthetic one. The traditional style of the other would be sweet, but the look and feel (and extra weight) is not worth the cost to me right now. Also, I've never bought anything from L.L. Bean before, so I am unfamiliar with their guarantee policies or changes. I do like Eddie Bauer a lot, which is a similar company and still offers lifetime guarantee on all their products. But I don't like their current backpack offerings for what I want.

It is still a decent return policy--but it is simply not what it was. Some of us made decisions to buy items or pay more money for them precisely for that guarantee.

    I do like the ruck.

    Good luck!

I received one of these as a Christmas gift from my Dad a couple years ago after admiring the one he's had for as long as I can remember. I had it all loaded up for my wife to carry (I have an old Kelty that's a little larger) on an overnight hike that we had planned. My wife was pregnant at the time and she had been feeling great up until about a week or two before we were set to take off. Finally she fessed up and told me she didn't feel up to it. So the packs are still hanging in the basement and we have been chasing an ornery little red headed boy around the house for the last 15 months. Such is life! :)

You could always call them as tell them you missed the sale and maybe they would give you the 25% off!

If anyone that is waiting until they go on sale, I have one in the khaki color that I used as a hotel bag for a weekend. I'm not a huge fan of this bag over the other ones I have, so I would sell it off.

I love the LL Bean Continental Rucksack. I keep looking at more modern styles but just have a hard time at the thought of not using it. I've had mine for about 13 or 14 years or so. I bought it back when they were around $99. Its been on a lot of outings. I know you all have seen it before but I like posting it.
