hope this isn't old news, found a little field sharpener that might be of interest to some

it reminds me of the old school barber strops, but much (much) smaller

its from an outfit called Brommeland and consists of a small leather strop 1.25" x 12", it's preloaded with BR black compound (or green or w/o any), two tie ends- put one end on a branch or like, hold the other end with one hand, sharpen away with the other

comes in a little tin and weighs under 2 ounces; there is a larger version as well

works well, would be really handy hunting- would have been great to have during our bison hunt!!!

Black compound is typically more coarse than white compound right? Or does it vary. Pretty cool stuff

I'm not familiar with the white; I have green and black- black if coarser than green- not sure with the white???

looks like black is the coarsest compound (Bark River's) ~ 3000 grit, green 6000 and white 12,000

I have a couple, 1 home made and 1 I bought many years ago.
Takes a little getting used to...if you dont hold the leather tight enough you'll ending up rounding the edge over.

@Brommeland is a member here at BCUSA. I purchased a Bark River from him as a private sale on another venue. He is a good man...

I put compound in the inside of my belt, and use that.

I've been using Flexcut Gold and it gives a wicked edge. Good enough for James Gibson, good enough for me...

I have a leather belt with compound worked into the inside that I just pull off if I need field stropping. It does mark up your pants waste band a bit though.
