Come to the 2017 NJ PINELANDS CAMPOUT!!!
    Friday, March 17th - Sunday, March 19th

Click here for the Trip Report!

I have reserved TWO HUGE GROUP SITES for two nights at BEAUTIFUL Brendan T. Byrne State Forest (formerly Lebanon State Forest).

This sites can accommodate up to 60 people and support both Tent and Hammock camping.

Parking is very close to the group site and there are facilities within a short walk.

Don’t be deceived by the available creature comforts. Brendan T. Byrne Forest occupies 37,242 acres of NJ Pine Barrens that spans two counties and is home to fox, coyote, black bears, and tons of other plants and wild life. It also has over 25 miles of trails, including part of the well-known 50 mile Batona Trail.

This beautiful state forest also contains a historic 19th century town called Whitesbog Village which was once one of the largest cranberry and blueberry farms in the state.

The campsite will cost you $Freefifty. (that means no money) I’m covering the cost of the sites and hoping people will show up!

Burgers and Hot Dogs for Friday dinner are on me too!

I will also be holding two FREE Raffle GIVE-AWAYS!
A BEN AKIN Knife Give Away, a Bushcraft Goodie Bag, and some other cool items!!!

    Details about the site:
    -2 fire rings
-We have permission to practice fire building outside the fire rings
-The use of dead wood for carving and fires is ENCOURAGED because it helps remove fuel from the area which contributes to forest fires.
-There is plenty of FLAT ground for tents and lots of trees for hammocks around the site’s perimeter.
-Firewood is also available for $6 per large bag at the ranger station.
-Sorry, no dogs allowed at the group sites.

    What is there to do?
-Fellowship: Meet other BCUSA members and like-minded folks
    -Hikes & Exploration
    -Carving
    -Firecraft
    -Shelter building
    -Exchange tips, tricks, and skills
    -Trade Blanket
-Can Jam Frisbee game (not bushcraft but hey, it’s a blast)
-Friction Fire Challenge Prize for winner
    -
Flint and Steel Challenge Prize for winner

I will be cross-posting this in the New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland subforums in hopes of attracting a crowd but this is OPEN TO EVERYONE. The state forest is pretty close to Atlantic City Airport, wink wink. If somebody needed a lift after flying, we could make that happen.

Please post if you are going to try to come (and how many people).

    Update:

Participate in the following events to win prizes!

    Prettiest Feather Stick
This one was @GreenFrog 's idea. Carve a feather stick out of whatever kind of wood you like. A panel of non-partial judges will select the most beautiful curls. This will take place on Friday.

    Friction Fire Challenge
For this event, we will have teams of up to three people. The specific rules for this challenge will remain a secret until Saturday when we start. Feel free to start conspiring now. All teams must come up with a team name.

    Percussion Fire Challenge
Please bring your flint and steel fire kits! This will be a fast paced, single elimination style, individual event. Participants are free to use whatever steel and stone, charred material, and natural tinder they like. You can bring your tinder from home or gather it at the campout. This event will take place on Saturday.

    Bush Cook-off
Cook up whatever you like with as many ingredients as you want. Your item or dish must be cooked over the evening campfire on Saturday. I'll select a couple judges to help me select the winner of this individual event.

    Trap Craft
For this event, you can craft any kind of trap you want. A panel of judges will select a winner based on craftsmanship, originality, ingenuity, or whatever impresses them most. Your trap must work when the appropriate force is applied on the trigger. This individual event will take place on Saturday.

    Gag prizes
A couple of prizes will be awarded based on silly, secret conditions.

    AWESOME!

I think I should be able to get there as early as ten. Maybe earlier. I have to check on one little detail before I know for sure.

If I still lived in NJ, I would be there. As an aside, I used to lifeguard Pakim Pond back in the day.

So.. first impression.. I'm totally in!!! But here are my personal caveats:

Would like to bring Ted along if he's willing. That will depend on what's happening at his office closer to that time (most likely last minute). That is also dependent on if he can take at least 1/2 day off, because this is a two hour trip, so to get there for Friday, I'd want to leave early - outside of rush hour chaos!

If Ted does not want to go at first offer, I will plan to take the day off and make the trip myself.

However, based on my physical issues (back and cold sensitivity) I have a serious lack of confidence about staying warm/comfortable for an outdoors overnight. Sent you a PM about this @Wolfcri . I really want to be courageous and try this (would be my first official bushcraft overnight outdoors! (ie not in a primitive cabin)), but I think I would be more brave if I knew I had a fallback (especially since my plan would be to attend all three days) so I wouldn't wind up crippled the next week (due to freezing or back strain).

Either way I will figure it out! I'm really excited about visiting this awesome area - Thanks @Wolfcri for the excellent planning and incentives!

Thanks for posting this! I am going to try to add more maps and info over the next month.

    Great!

There are definitely places in the area. Cedar water too. I will try to get more info on that too.

Pakim Pond maybe but it's tiny, iirc. We could paddle across and look for carnivorous plants on a mini adventure.

Many years ago I camped at Brendan Byrne Forest and used Micks Canoe Rental for a day trip and paddled a piece of the Wading River Canoeing Kayaking New Jersey NJ Trail Guides for the Wading and Oswego Rivers Wharton State Forest Pinelands Pine Barrens - Micks Pine Barrens Canoe and Kayak Rental

It was beautiful and very narrow and I've heard it doesn't freeze up.

I've canoed the Mullica. Also in Wharton. Couple places it turned into a swamp and was very hard to find our way through. There were a couple beaver dams along the way.

By the that time in March I would think ice would not be a problem. (Famous last words?)

Edit: I'm not sure if I will bring my canoe along but since the parking is close to the campground the RAM will be loaded with toys. Some made of iron on long thin sticks. I may also bring a hammock and a tent and venture into hammock land if it goes well.

Checking my family calendar. Did some serious bow hunting in there back in the day. Have to imagine most of the sand roads are now blocked to the public.

fyi, before the invention of satellite imagery, online topo maps etc. I used to wonder if there was an ancient 12 point buck who totally knew how to hide during every hunting season at a spot on the above maps. 39.899833, -74.557628. It's an island completely surrounded by swamps that were "inaccessible to humans". Thought about if I could get to it by canoe?

Looks like there's actually a trail leading right up to it on Google Maps images. This technology is taking a good bit of mystery out of exploring the woods.

    Shhhhhhhh... lol

Actually most of those are cranberry bogs that are well worked. Sadly most of the deer or pretty small and taste like acorns but they'll do in a pinch.

Now there are some great trails and a few hidden brooks w/ good clean water once you filter out the tannins. Naturally it's tick city so take regular precautions when hiking the area. (pants tucked into socks, brimmed hat, permethrin on outer layers etc.)

Lot's of options for the photog's in the group. Pine stands, carnivorous plant life around the ponds, etc.

I've got this on the calendar. Will be working up some tonteldoos to throw in the raffle. Working on a couple made out of bamboo.

Great stuff, looking forward to the gathering. Might have to bring a couple biscuits and setup a tripod for some hawk tossing.

Like one of those easy-up awnings? Probably. I am going to go scout the site soon. I will post pictures.

Any chance you can make about 20 LB of your buffalo chicken dip? Better make that 30.

My back sometimes acts up in prolonged exposure to cold weather. Since we are close to the cars no need to go ultra light.
A thicker air mattress, a good camp chair, some of those heat packets, possibly even a cot to stay off the ground.
All things I've used in the past.

Just noticed your above post. I have a few tarps and poles I can bring. I also have some glow in the dark paracord. Useful when you have a bunch of tarps/tents in one area.
And lots of regular rope and pegs.

I'll have to remember to bring some cat tail for making char. Also some of my very thin birch bark.
I won't bring any firewood from home as most of what I have is Ash from trees killed by the Emerald Ash Borer.
I also have some basswood blocks for carving but they are small and more suited for carving with pocket knives.
