    Hey All,

Anyone have interest in doing something for a day or a weekend? I know @wisconsinwalter has tried to get something together in the past. Im just throwing the idea out there again. Personally, i prefer staying pretty close to home, as i take care of my father. It doesnt rule out a nice weekend of camping, carving, comradery. Like i said, just throwing it out there to see if people have interest. I really havent thought about dates or anything. What you think?

Maybe... but I don't want to travel too far for it either. What time of year might we be looking at?

I'll pay attention, but I'm not making any promises.
I'm pretty hermit like, and I'm flighty, always changing my plans at the last minute.
I get paid to plan and be organized, I sorta go to the opposite extreme in my free time.

Cool temps would be a plus, and since I’m a minimum of 5 hrs away, any Northern Wisconsin location would be good with me.

Does anyone have any ideas of a location? I like the chequamegon forest, here in the north. North Country Trail is nice. I know snipen did a winter hang somewhere and that looked nice, not sure where it was. Lets throw some ideas around, then after this weekend holiday, maybe lets start thinking about something. -Phil

Im not looking to do much if its 100 out either, unless, we go to one of the islands. Ive always wanted to camp on an isolated one. However, if we can find some decent, coolish temps. Im down

The islands would be cool. The only problem is that I don't know if I'm allowed to go on all of them or what permits I may need. I think you could get your permits to camp and do what you want, where ever you want through GLIFWIC, but I might be more limited to what I can legally do there and I might not be allowed access to all the islands. Just food for thought.

Ive got the permits. Im not positive how many can camp on one permit. A few im thinking for sure. Thats why i mentioned the forest too. I can use permit there also. Ill see if i can find out. However, a fall island camp would b cool. If its open, they reserve them in advance, the only fee would b boat shuttle fee im thinking. I dont have a big enough boat to feel safe. The big lake can change in an instant.

    True dat.

Do all the boats launch from Madeline Island? I've only been there once. A fall camp would be cool. What spots in the woods are you thinking of?

Apostle Islands...some are off limits and all that aren't require permits of some type to camp on them.

I never knew that. I'll have to learn about them. :)

Although, I thought you were talking about islands on the Flowage. :) I was wondering if you got into some kind of trouble that got you banned. Maybe caught too many fish or something. ;)

Nope all the flowage islands are fair game except for like 2, which are private...one has a house!

There’s a site on Whispering Lake that has pretty easy walk in access and another site adjacent to it.
I’ve never fished Whispering Lake so I can’t attest to that opportunity.

Black Jack has only one lake in it, but I'm sure there are some rivers and creeks that run through some camp site areas as well.

Yes, on several occasions. Can’t say I know it like the back of my hand, though. We have hiked and snowshoed there, and have paddled the Deerskin River(really taggy and I would not recommend it).
I think the site at Whispering Lake could work well as it is a short hike in, and is large enough for several tents, and hammock options are there .
Overall, I would say the area sees light usage.

I would have to agree with you there. I have worked in that area for years, and it has only been the past few years that I have even heard of it. :) I have never heard anyone in Eagle River even mention it before.

Im not positive, but im thinking they leave from Madeline. Ive wanted to hit michigan or outer. Its 30 miles by water from madeline or saxon harbor. Lets do this this fall! Cooler, less bugs for sure, northern lights, how can a guy go wrong. Ill investigate this.

Blackjack looks awesome @Scotchmon Id be up for this too! I could bring a canoe, if folks wanted to paddle around and catch us some fish too! Haha! How many people could fit in one site? Its close enough too! What you all think? Doable? Close enough for everyone?

    @gohammergo, @theNATIVEONE8 :
I also would bring my solo canoe. The carry in is doable.
Whispering Lake is small so while it doesn’t offer much for canoe adventure, having one could untap more fishing opportunities .
“How many people can it accommodate?”, Depending on how much room one requires, I would think at least 6-8 without being on top of each other. There’s also another hilltop site adjacent to it.
There’s no pit toilet or picnic table at either site.
NOW AS I’M WRITING THIS I AM QUESTIONING MYSELF IF THIS SITE IS FOR DAY USE ONLY. (Arrrgh!)
I’m headed that way later this month and can verify this. May also find out sooner as my BIL is in the area now and may possibly be able to confirm it sooner.

For a bushcraft outing, I don't think the Apostle Islands are the best choice. Cutting wood and crafting would be frowned upon. The ferries also increase the cost. I'd vote for the national forest. I might be able to make a fall meet. I haven't been to a gathering of any type in a long time. By the way... I'm in Ashland. Anything south of, say, Hayward ranks as "Southern Wisconsin" to me...:)

Why don't we pick a lake in Minocqua that has 40 cottages on it and camp on one of the lake's islands so we an have non stop pontoon boat action sailing by all day and night?!

    That's a good point.

I would look at any of the primitive sites that many of the lakes have.

Saw three on Island Lake in Manitowish chain yesterday.

Willow is the best dispersed/primitive lake in the north woods besides Turtle Flambeau

Lots of human activity in those places though. Granted it would be fall but still lots of people go to both areas.

Not a soul near any of the campsites I mentioned. I was on four busy lakes for sure but the purpose of the primitive sites is exclusion. I asked the DNR about dispersed camping and they reminded me of where and why some sites aren’t available easily and why they don’t include dispersed camping.

I guess I don’t care where we go but I spend a lot of time on the water up north and can testify to the secluded nature of many lakes.

The Eagle pic was taken yesterday on Island lake.

Is there a lot of boat traffic on turtle?
If we camped on an island, I assume we would have to haul in firewood? Would that be an issue? Is there a place nearby to get fresh water for drinking? Not that water is a big deal, I have several Coleman water jugs.

It will be nice to finally meet some of you guys in person.:)

I would think if we are portaging in, shouldn’t be an issue getting supplies in.

They call Turtle the BWCA of WI.

I am up for anything but this could be a trip to remember.

We already figured on hauling in firewood to an island,a place that would be truly "picked over".

Although the Turtle would be cool. I think it poses too many variables such as firewood as mentioned above...plus weather. I endured a near hurricane force storm ( 67 plus mph winds with lightening be tossed by Zeus himself) on a small island in a lake once and it was something to behold. If it's crappy out we'll just be stuck on the island till it clears with nowhere to go and we wouldn't have anywhere to hike around or go hunting if we want if the weather is nice...it would basically be a fall fishing trip with evenings spent camping on the island. Plus lots of people use that area and it will probably be crawling with fall musky fisherman by that time of year. Water wouldn't be an issue, I have a filter system.

I think a more land based option near a lake would be best. Especially if hunting and hiking are to be had. I had come to these very same conclusions after thinking about an Apostle islands option as mentioned earlier.

The Blackjack wilderness area or any other Forest Service campground would provide lake access, water pump, outhouses, and areas to hike and hunt in the surrounding woods. Just my 2 cents.
