    UPDATE: launch at 9:45.

At the last campout, we talked about planning another canoe/kayak Hocking River campout or a Wildcat Hollow campout. I’m good for either and any weekend.

Does anyone else have a location or date preference?

    **************************************

Here is the campout plan. It will be a float campout starting in Logan and ending in Nelsonville.

We are going to meet at 9:45am Saturday 10/20 at the public access across the street:

    https://goo.gl/maps/2xhYhDta3PE2 Kachelmacher Park
    Logan, OH 43138

Then paddle to the camping location here:

https://goo.gl/maps/pCQvVfYrVr72 Dropped Pin near Starr Township, OH

Saturday paddling will be leisurely with some smallmouth fishing and a stop for lunch.

We’ll make it to the camping spot well before dark so that we have plenty of time to set up. Once there, we will grill some great food and have some adult beverages while we fish and tell a bunch of exaggerated stories.

Sunday morning, we’ll make a campfire breakfast and then paddle a few more miles to the destination point here:

https://goo.gl/maps/dM33WjivvKL2 Dropped Pin near Nelsonville, OH

We plan to have extra room in a couple of canoes, so plan to attend even if you don’t have a canoe or kayak.

Oct 27-28 is out for me. Hoping to make it over to an LTWK gathering. Other than that I should be free.

We canoed/kayaked on the Hocking River for about 8 miles or so, camped for the evening, and then did another few miles the next day. I caught a few small mouth bass. Of course camping included grilled steaks and taters with adult beverages. It was a good trip. I’d do the same again, but I’d be equally happy to just camp for the weekend.

I have a vote for the weekend of October 20. Anyone else?

We could meet early Saturday, kayak and fish, and then get to camp in time to set up before dark. I have a bottle of Smoky Mountain whiskey that I’ll bring along and of course some food to grill.

The temperature should mid-60s during the day and mid-30s at night—almost cold enough for @jswi2374 to go wading.

wish i could ya'll....but i've checked the calendars (school and wife) and it turns out i am full up ever weekend in october! which is a big bummer-a canoe trip sounds like some real fun!

let's be honest-i've made two get togethers this year? that IS twice as many as i make some years!! (sadly....)

keep an eye on the spring and fall flint ridge knapp in near near Newark- there is at least one BCUSA member- @JEB from Michigan who is a vendor there the past few years= it would make a good day trip meet and greet and there is camping overnight as well.

Cold water makes my feet feel better. Maybe this time I'll bring my water shoes and not the Birkenstocks. Does the Hocking River have any cat tail? Crawdads?
I'd be good for the 20th.

Given I’ve had three votes for 10/20 and no other votes, let’s make this an overnight kayak/camp 10/20-10/21.

If for some reason we can’t kayak e.g. flooding, let’s camp Utah Ridge or Wildcat Hollow.

We’ll grill some good food, including cattails, and we’ll enjoy a nice fire while we sip adult beverages.

I believe Oct. 20-21 is set.

I enjoyed our last canoe/kayak adventure and would do that again, but let’s take an informal vote on the campout location.

    Which do you prefer?

    1) Canoe/kayak Hocking River and camp in Wayne NF along the river
    2) Wildcat Hollow in Wayne NF/Burr Oak
    3) Other

I believe we have 4 interested so far:
    @dadman
    @jswi2374
    @hlydon
    @Blujakt

    Thanks.

Add me to the interested list. Canoe trip sounds fun but alas I have no canoe and also would depend on the weather.

I say we plan on doing a river trip and make Wildcat Hollow a backup plan if the river is flooded.

We should have a couple canoers that could use another person in the canoe. So, no one plan to miss this trip because you don’t have a kayak or canoe. We’ll make sure everyone is accommodated.

@dadman is one of the most generous bushcrafters I know. Although he can’t make the trip, he is willing to loan out his canoe, but you have to pick it up (Springfield?) and bring it back within a week after the trip.

Ok, we're getting close and I need some details:
Where and when are we meeting on Saturday?
Is there anyone else thinking about getting there Friday night? (Long drive for early Saturday morning)
Are the steaks and spuds a definite for Saturday night or should we plan our own dinner?
Are we coordinating gear at all?
Expected time and location to wrap up on Sunday?

@jswi2374 I updated the plan in the first post. I’d be glad to meet Friday, but I’m guessing most people aren’t able to meet until Saturday. We can take a poll if you want.

For those that aren’t paddling, they can arrive at the camp spot at any time. For those that are paddling, it’s probably better that we coordinate a start and end time.

I won’t be in a hurry to leave Sunday. I think a relaxing bushcraft breakfast is in order, and then a leisurely paddle to the end. I’m keeping the whole weekend open, but will leave whenever someone needs to leave.

I think we need a headcount to determine exactly what to bring.

I’ll bring a grill and some steaks and some whiskey for Saturday night. We can also coordinate an on the water lunch e.g. sandwiches.

I added a Friday versus Saturday start date. As of now, we will meet Saturday morning unless the poll result shows people prefer Friday.

Also please let everyone know if you are planning on attending the campout by voting in the poll?

Okay. We will stick to the original plan and meet Saturday morning since we have 3 votes for Saturday.

As of now, I think we have the following members confirmed: jswi2374, hlydon, and blujakt. Anyone else?

Looks like there is a "road" on the curve of 278 near the campsite. Is it doable with a vehicle and can it access the campsite (or at least provide somewhere off the road to park and hike in)?

I was planning on taking that Friday off anyway... So depending on the answer I might head down on Friday.

Hey @Marsh1 I added the details to the first post of this thread.

The details mostly just include locations and timing of the campout. We’ll play it by ear at the campout. I imagine we won’t do much hiking. Much of the time will be spent paddling (for those joining that part) and hanging around camp. But, we are always open to ideas.

Ok. I've got two days of vacation to burn before the end of the month. Taking Friday off. I'll be at the campsite sometime (TBD) Friday. Will be camping Friday and Saturday. Don't think I'll be doing the float part. So if anyone wants to swing by Saturday morning and drop off any gear before heading to the ramp, I can keep an eye on things. Space available (it is a Colorado so a small bed), I can toss a few things in the back of the truck on Sunday morning to haul to the ramp.

Hello Marsh1! I have a 15' canoe that paddles much better with two people in it. I would be glad to have you and your gear come aboard and provide ballast, if nothing else. Seriously, the thing is a beast to paddle solo.... even if you've never canoed in your life, just sitting up front would help!
@hlydon and @Blujakt , are you two riding together or do you each have your own watercraft? Can you transport your own gear?

We will be kayaking. But we are both coming from the Cincinnati area, so we will meet up and take one vehicle. We will transport our gear on the kayaks.

The river is fairly shallow and easy to navigate although it has several strainers. There are a few spots we likely will have to step out of the canoes/kayaks.

Great! I'm no expert and it's a big canoe for one person. Plus I could use the company!
I was just wondering if the lone canoe would be turned into the gear barge... which I'd be okay with but...

Weather forecasts are predicting temps in the 40s and 50s during the day, 30s on Saturday night. Rain possible on Saturday morning.
This might be interesting. Brush up on "man in the creek" drills!

You all have fun with that. I'll keep the fire going at the campsite. ;)

I’m up for an adventure. Rain or shine, I’m camping. I’m still good with kayaking/canoeing, but let me know if for whatever reason you don’t want to paddle.

@WY_Not if @jswi2374 and the others bail on paddling, I’ll likely join you Friday evening.

It is comforting to know that, should we paddle, there will be a warm fire at camp waiting for us!

I'm not bailing on the canoe idea. What I am doing is thinking about my gear, skill levels, and risk tolerances in light of the probable weather. It's something I do before every camp. I suppose we all do in our own way.
I was thinking about going with a hammock but now I'm repacking for a ground set up. I don't have a real under quilt for cold weather hanging. Night temps in the 50s would be okay for my improvised gear but not the 30s.
Protecting my hands from cold and wet is on my mind.
Big fire. More hearty food. Warmer sleep system.
I'm having fun! So looking forward to this weekend, in whatever form it takes!
