Maybe kisatchie? I'm guaranteed time off come April. I'm planning on spending at least two maybe three days down there. Thoughts questions suggestions....

My punctuation is horrific on the title... It should read "Ok, ..." not an Oklahoma meet. :|

I can be flexible as to time and place. I am a big fan of the Backbone trail.

The Backbone Trail and the Caroline Dorman trail are hiking trails (7 and 10 miles respectively) and you can camp anywhere along the trails. The Caroline Dorman is kind of a boring trail (just dont see anything that grabs your attention). The Backbone follows a ridge through the "valley" and gives some great views (almost like being in another state). There is a ridge that is great for camping on, already has several fire rings etc.

There are several campgrounds if backpacking is not what you have in mind. The Kisatchie Bayou campground is really cool, but when Bench and I were there a few months ago the bayou was dry. The Coyote Campground that Bench and I stayed at has some good views over the valley.

KajunKat, would like to meet you, and I personally like to have kids on a camping trips. They seem to bring "wonder" into all the things we do in the woods.

can't believe i missed this thread for 2 weeks!

i should be able to make it... i love the kisatchie area, though i dislike walking! i'm good with the backbone trail, and love that overlook Rob's talking about... provided we get our normal spring rains, the bayou cypre' will be full. no preference for any particular weekend, but earlier will be cooler.

Bring the kids kajun I think they'd be welcome by all. Don't kno exactly when but I know in April for sure. Should still be cool then hopefully. I'm down with a bit of a walk, but what ever works for all involved.

i may bring my daughter, if she wants to come... kids are fine with me. the walk to the overlook is not quite at the halfway point of the trial, iirc... i think it's about 2.5 to the overlook, and about 3.5 to complete the loop.

april's usually kinda 70s-ish. a lot like october usually. nice month.

Guys, I JUST joined BushcraftUSA recently and just found the Louisiana forum. I am looking to join up in a trip soon, but I need to get outside and work on some of my rusty skills. Please keep me in the loop for future adventures. Just me at first, kids can come later.
    Thanks

Are you talking about me seeker? NELABushman just called me and mentioned this tread to me. I would like to attend and may bring one of my kids as well.

Would you consider the campsite - launch point near Goldonna? If you have a canoe or boat you can go downstream about 3/4 mile and be away from every one, plus the fishing ain't too bad either.

hey SwampRat... in the portion you quoted, no, i was just replying to Probie's post... referring to meeting up with people off the internet, let alone us bushcrafters who carry knives and guns...

in the other post i was wondering aloud that we hadn't heard from you yet... and i think i PMed you too, so it'd show up in your email, as i hadn't seen you on here lately.

Goldonna... that's up near the 'other' kisatchie... winnfield, saline lake area, right?

i'm easy... it's farther for me, closer for you... i'm good if it means you'll be able to come vs not coming if it's in the Kis. Hills Wilderness Area... how accessible is it if you DON'T have a canoe? that may hamper it for some of the others.

So far as I'm concerned location doesn't matter much. I'm going to be there after most of y'all leave so I can do my own thing later. Luck of all luck, I have the entire week off, I'm staying three or four days. I'm up for back bone trail or which ever, being with out a canoe I won't be floating far lol.

Just want to make sure we pick a spot that accomadates the majority of members. If anyone is wanting to attend but would not be able to because of the hike into a spot, then I would prefer to pick a car camping area. I know several are bring kids, etc and dont want anyone to not come because they feel like they would be a burden to the group. I will always throw out a backpacking trip cause that is what I like. But, as long as I am outside, I can do car camping areas as well.

i like the Backbone Trail idea... there's parking and a porta-john/outhouse right there at the trailhead, and iirc, there's a pretty big campsite a few yards back up the Caroline Dorman Trail (west), with car access there as well. Friend of mine parks a horse trailer there. This would be very convenient for those with young kids or who don't / can't walk (btw, how's the ACL, Erratus Animus?) Anyone who wanted to go out a bit further could access the BB Trail, as it's right there.

That said, i'm easy, but this would be my preference.

Second that Rob, I'm a little handicapped as to local info. I'm up for any thing pretty much. Car camping is easy, and hiking backbone is what 3.5 miles to the over look. I can do it, it'll suck but I can walk it. Majority rules here so which ever.

This is looking good, my kids are not real young 11, 13, 14 and 15. the older three can pack there weight pretty good. We are planning some test hikes in the next couple of weeks at Crystal springs in MS to see where everyone is at. We are very new to hiking we have car camped before but are looking to be challenged. Sounds like a good time.

Kajun Kat, Clear Springs is one of my favorite spots. The trails there are not overly strenous, but are still a workout. I would suggest the Mill Creek trail as it is the shortest (a bit over 5 miles), the Tally's and Richardson Creek trails are just a bit under 11 miles each. Download a map to take as the trails cross over each other in a few places and can be confusing. I intend to head that way again soon myself.

Silenzzzzz, I have an extra (very lightly) used 3 man tent that you can borrow. It is just a Walmart cheapy, but it works.

Wildbayouvdo, you are mostly certainly welcome, so long as you behave around kids and don't drink and shoot guns at the same time... those are about my only two rules... not that i'm making rules for the group... just my own peeves... (i cuss, but watch it when in company.) and i only mind guns when people aren't handling them responsibly...

As for location, yes, that's exactly it. the campsite my friend was in is right where that horse symbol is, back down the Caroline Dorman Trail. The vault toilet is at intersection of the trail and road, in the NW corner. there's also a parking lot there.
