Jack-o-Lanterns found today. Beautiful mushroom. They are poisonous though they won't kill you. They will make you wish you were dead for a couple days but they won't kill you. Sometimes mistaken for the edible Chanterelles. These grow in clumps on dead wood. Chanterelles, for the most part grow separate and grow on the ground. These have beautiful gills that grow down the top of the stem. The Chanterelle has ugly, false gills.

I've read that the gills glow in the dark. I've also read that's an old wives tail. I have no personal knowledge and I'm not driving back out there tonight. Hard enough when you can see the undercarriage shattering rocks and washes during the daylight.

I’m actually really glad you posted this. I’ve heard of them but haven’t looked them up. I’ve been too scared that what I thought were chanterelles were actually Jack-o-lanterns to harvest them. I think it’s safe to say that what I’m finding are not Jack-o-lanterns. Thanks!!

@Donald Devall I agree it's safe to say you do not have a jack-o-lantern. Certainly looks like Chanterelle but I'm not there.

My rule concerning mushrooms is, If I'm not 110% sure they stay where they lay.

Looks indeed like a chantrelle. I have a bowl of them sitting on the kitchen table ready to get sauteed in butter. :)

I have also heard they glow, but have not witnessed it.

    What are you waiting for?

The last batch I had was sort of a chicken marsala without the wine. Lots of butter, EVOO, garlic. Place the chicken cutlets on a bed of angle hair pasta and smothered with the mushroom sauce...Sooo friggin good!

Lookin forward to them showing up here!
