I started out with a new 12" Machete.

I sand blasted the parkerizing from the blade, and reground a convex edge, much higher than the original bevels, and brought the edge back to the handle, then reshaped the handle. I shaped and installed some OD Canvas Micarta handle scales, and attached them with brass rivets. The micarta was given a sandblasted and oiled finish, and the blade a scotchbrite finish.

    Here are the results.

Working on one of my own, but it's going slowly. Mine has the "cutlass" style, Blackie Collins guard, which is either awesome or heinous, depending. I'm using Mac's suggestions as a guide.

    Nice work, Matt.

    Yup that's awesome.
If you could turn that into a production, you may have something there.

Is this a good blade template to work on, by that I mean, appropriate quality, thickness, etc? I am curious why you picked IT out of many possibilities. Thanks.

Wicked mod Matt. I convexed my Ontario machete and it is a thousand times better for it but what you did is something all together crazy dude. I have the one with the cutlass style handle like @brionic mentioned and I agree with it being either awesome or the worst idea ever. I may have to whip up some micarta and rehandle mine now. I'll leave the Parkerizing just because I'm a bit lazy and don't use it too much and it rusts like mad.

It's the same blade, btw, just different crappy scales, confirmed by Ontario. I sanded mine smooth to eliminate sharp edges, and I'm sticking with it until I either break it or get ridiculed into submission.

I kept the phosphate finish, too, for the same reason. Mine still rusted along the new bevel and edge.

Fantastic! Its the RAT 12 that Ontario should make.
