I had the opportunity to open a sort of "camping time capsule" today. I a friend gave me a Coleman Campstove that belonged to his elderly father in law. He told me over the phone that he was pretty sure it had never been used, but I was completely surprised to see it was still in the original box. The next surprise came when I opened it up and saw the totally undisturbed packing tape and cardboard!

It was purchased from JC Penney (where the old gentleman is retired from) and still has the original tag on the box. $32.99, marked down to $24.99

Can't wait to fuel it up and try it out!

That sounds about right. He would have been working there at that time I'm pretty sure.

    Very nice.

There should be a date, month and year, on the bottom of the stove case, or under the ears of the tank.

I have a New In Box Coleman 425f,,, dated 3/82... $5 at a yard sale...

I was able to find one just like that unused as well, with the stand. Oiled the pump, fired right up. Bet yours does too. Nice gift / friend.

Question, is there an oil that works better than others for oiling the pump?

I've got the same stove... bought in the early eighties :)
I wish I knew where the folding aluminum stand was. Probably with the folding campfire grate I can't find.

Great stove. You'll have fun using it.

I've used a very small amount of motor oil (from my truck engine's dip stick) when nothing else was available; any type of oil should work just fine.

We had one just like it when I was a kid! I can't count how many pancakes we ate fried up on that stove nor how many fish we fried! What a treasure, you hit the jackpot!

Nice score. Try to get one of those new on amazon and it'll run you $140. And won't have the same cool vintage story with it.

I have lots of memories with those stoves, solid performers.
