This was so cool. I'm glad to hear you made it to 11000 ft. That weather sounded nasty, and you made the right call. Thanks for taking on this challenge and sharing it with the rest of us. You rock.

I need to pin point the turn around point. I think 10,530was the alt he was discovered. TJ And I were just at 10,000 or creeping on it when we pulled pins

TJ went to check Lone Pine Lake I was in the drainage. it started Sleeting then the snow started dumping as well as the temps. I took off the pack to sort myself and said "Take what you need" looking upward'as it was no time for ceremony.I had already covered that Thursday at Whitney Portal Campground

I hope the musty damp goat smell was not from your house- also hope you and yours were not too harshly affected by all the recent flooding / torrential rainfall.

Was telling a friend about this expedition. Her reply, "Yeah, that was smart to turn around. If that other guy had called it off, he'd still be with us." Suffice it to say, she is not a BCUSA member. Probably channelling the spirit of Mrs. Ötzi.

Good on you for going. Armchair outdoorsmen take note.

Last night I watched documentaries about Eddie Hillary scaling Everest in '53, and a 2009 expedition on K2. Both expeditions featured plenty of "turning back" due to weather and safety concerns.

The expedition, the teamwork and camaraderie, and the time on the mountain are reward enough. Anyone choosing to focus their energy exclusively on summiting clearly has little or no mountaineering experience.

This is a big part of alpinism. Ignoring instincts and the rumblings of the mountain leads to ornaments and plaques adjoining base camp.

Mr. B, summit or no I don't see it any different. the research, the planning, the fabrication of period-authentic gear, the RESPECT paid to the Iceman, the learning and the doing, THAT'S what this is about!

much respect to you, man. it's all about the journey, not the destination...

    All this^^^ !!!
So glad you went for it, and so glad you will live to tell us more about it. You did what Otzi would have done, he lived to be an old guy (for his time) by channeling his common sense, as you did. Such an adventure, can't wait to hear more...

Curious if Mr. Black has an Otzi tattoo on his back?

I know of a person that just got the Otzi tattoo, it think it is a series of marks lllll, under that llll and under that llll. Has anyone heard what the meaning of these could have been?

I think those last two are powerful. Thats all I downloaded tonight. I'll leave posting the rest to you once I get them in your hands
If anyone is wondering why these were not posted until now, it's because these shots were from another mber of the party. One that I was only recently able to get these and many other photos from

I think I had mentioned JR3 and Sarg, that in the 10 day window of our 3 day window there were no summits.the rain sleet snow rain sleet snow all leading to what felt a hard freeze was not ideal as my two others times to the top lol I hope to go back and stand up top...
Although the BCUSA 10 by10 was a part of the Emergency plan the fact it had to be broke out straigtht out of the gate says alot about what the weather was doing.Im sure I would have been soaked to the bone 100 yards out on the trail...some parties coming down reported waist high snow at the chute and building... "to be continued is better than the end" is the biggest thing I came away with...and im sticking to it lol

If the trail was iced over it would have been way to dangerous if not impossible. You did the right thing. There is no shame in that. If there would have been the need for a rescue then even more would have been at risk.

Wow. I didn't follow this as it happened last year, I was out hiking the AT. So I'm doing research now on my PCT hike this summer and one of the options is taking a side trail up to the Mt. Whitney summit. Even in mid summer this trail is rated "extremely difficult". I don't know what your route was, but man, total respect for what you and the team did.

I don't see any use in having a uniform and arbitrary way of spelling words. We might as well make all clothes alike and cook all dishes alike. Sameness is tiresome; variety is pleasing. I have a correspondent whose letters are always a refreshment to me, there is such a breezy unfettered originality about his orthography. He always spells Kow with a large K. Now that is just as good as to spell it with a small one. It is better. It gives the imagination a broader field, a wider scope. It suggests to the mind a grand, vague, impressive new kind of a cow.
    - speech at a spelling match, Hartford, Connecticut, May 12, 1875. Reported in the Hartford Courant, May 13, 1875
