Something I thought today as I started planning out my BCUSA Basic activities...

If there's enough interest, maybe a couple of us local folks could meet up every now and then at one of the local state parks/gamelands and work on some of the BCUSA activities together, maybe do some overnights, things of that nature. I currently work the night shift with an odd schedule so really Wednesdays and Thursdays work out for me the best but if there's something big coming down the pipe I have a lot of vacation days so I can try to work in something. Just an idea I've been kicking around so I figured I'd throw it out there and see if anyone's interested.

Raccoon Creek State Park is fairly convenient. That's where I did most of my Bushclass lessons.

They have 2 different packbacking overnight areas with 5 Adirondack shelter and 5 tent sites each. They also have several primitive car camping sites and a couple of group tenting area capable of up to 25 people. Fires have to be kept to established fire pits though.

I spend quite a bit of time there, hiking several times a month

I'm definitely in. I live about 45min east of the city but I would have no problem driving a couple hours in any direction for a meet. I live on Loyalhanna Lake which is surrounded by woods and gamelands. There's plenty of places around here to camp and have fires or just do some hiking. I'd be willing to have a meet out this way or venture out elsewhere. I am married with a couple kids so the more notice the better. This cabin fever is killing me, I need to get out soon.

Same here. I'm going back to daylight tomorrow for good, so I've been busy getting things in order for that. I work this Saturday but after that things should start to settle down.

I work nights right now with weekdays off, so things are a bit odd for me but I've been getting out and about in the neighborhood and the woods nearby. Nothing too crazy just yet, but the oldest son is interested in camping out so he may spend his first night in a tarp here once it warms up soon.

I would be interested. I just started getting into bushcraft and would like to get together with others to learn. Racoon would be fine. Moraine SP also has hike in shelters.

I live by there too and there is lots of places to hike canoe fish hunt trap camp etc etc. I'd be in as long I had notice too. My daughter goes off to college next year so we r doing a lot with her this summer.

I'd hate to necro but, I'm new around here and I'm always looking to learn new stuff. Live in South Fayette and about 20-30 minutes from Raccoon Creek State Park. I'm just starting to get out and a beginner backpacker. (IE my pack is too heavy still cause I bring too much stuff I don't need)

There's nothing scheduled in W. PA right now that I know of. Maybe some of us W. PA guys should try to get something going for early summer.

If you're looking to learn some skills that will help you lighten your pack, take a look at Bushclass USA. It has helped me a lot.

The two accessible primitive spots do have a water pump. I'm assuming that it is the Sioux sites. It's got a pump right on site there and it's very clean water. I was just there for the weekend this past.

I think I commented to @Badey and @melbolt65 (I *think* it was out loud, but it *might* have been in my head, since I was half-focused on walking up a hill at that moment) that the Primitive Skills Workshop could be a good excuse for a meet-up for forum members at Raccoon that same weekend. I'm not sure if the workshop has a capacity limit, but it looks like it runs Saturday mid-morning to Sunday, leaving some time around the edges of the weekend (e.g., Friday) for non-workshop activities. I haven't pushed the idea too hard (I'm looking at a busy summer, work-wise), but in case someone else needs inspiration, thought I would bring it up.

Also, one of the things I've never been sure of for Raccoon Creek SP are the restrictions on who can rent the group tenting sites at Sioux. The last time I looked into it, it didn't seem like simply forming a group of like-minded individuals was enough to qualify. But then again, I also haven't actually called the State Park to hear their interpretation of it: http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/staythenight/organizedgrouptenting/index.htm

We are thinking of getting there on Friday late afternoon and do a hike to the Falls and then set up camp where the work shop is going to be. We will only have a few hours to hike and pitch camp. Does anyone have a link to the trail map? I can't seem to find it on the inter web.

I know the meeting spot for the event is at the office. Its a about a 5 min ride to the camp sites. There are two group sites at Sioux but during an event weekend I doubt they will allow you to occupy them. The small one (10-20) is $28 per night and the large one they say can house 100 but its more like 50 is $52 per night. There is a chance that they will put us up at the cabin area that is a bit more secluded, but I doubt that.

You may get a cabin if you reserve one for that weekend but it states that ( Participants will need to bring basic camping gear food and water.) So a tent or hammock set up will be needed. I have no idea where they will set us up at but a email I received said a hammock is fine. Also they will send a email about a week before the event with more details.

Had a good time and very informative. First night ever hanging but sleep like a baby. Got up early Sunday around 4:30 am but that is sleeping in for me. Took out my camp stove to make breakfast and coffee and broke down camp before the day started at 9 am. Had a good time! 18951340_1733486900013381_3497326403016329180_n.jpg 19029399_1733921449969926_1793059846107020456_n.jpg 18951488_1733922223303182_7218737259592910534_n.jpg
