One of my favorite pieces of gear for hiking around is an old deck of plant ID cards. Gives you something to do on the trail, they don't take up much room, and could come in real handy for survival.

This will be an ongoing thread. Going to post pics of each card and the plants as I find them in the wild. There are some I doubt I will be able to find but will get as many as I can. Hope you guys don't mind pictures of knives, going to include pics of my favorite blades as I go.

The other thing I liked about your cards when I saw them is they have decent photos, instead of crappy illustrations drawn by some drunk with a quill pen that has never even seen the plant.
You could also pull out the cards that are not relative to your area to save a little space.
I just think plant ID cards like this are a brilliant idea.
Somebody should start producing these again.

They are the best I have found. I got no idea if they are still around or not. Im sure there are some pro online shoppers on here that could find out.

If not then someone definitely should but they are not as cool as 200 dollar canteens or custom knives. Plus wilderness survival has been dumbed down so much in recent years that food isn't a priority anymore, cause our dumb asses will be rescued in 3 days so no need to learn how to feed yourself lol. I don't know if there is a market for em these days.

    Wow, thanks for the effort.

I have a few decks of these cards laying around.
download.jpg Always good to have resources. Linda Runyon put these together. She knows her stuff. Do not include poisonous plants.

They literally stand off the "page". Originally I thought you had lay the 0lant on a black card, not that it actually was the card with a photo. I think they could help anyone. Thanks for posting.

And these are from the 1970s, you would think with advances in photo technology they could make some really nice ones these days.

The thing that has always bothered me about a lot of survival manuals is the poor pictures/drawing of plants they expected you to use to identify plants with. Not all though larry deal Olsen's book had a great plant section.

I have no doubt youve seen the Army field manual drawings for plant id. Its a joke. I could barely identify the cat tail, and K already knew well what it looked like. These cards are great.

Yes lol Im not a fan of the army FM-21-76
Frank Heyl is the guy who made these cards. He was a top military survival instructor man for a lot of years. Im sure he knew how poor a lot of there reference materials were.

Ordered a set each, will be interesting to compare with the other set that I have. Speedhook.com will wonder what the sudden rush on plant cards is all about.

Thanks! Ordered a set of these from the Speedhook link posted above. Another item I will be keeping in my "always have with me" kit. I should order another set for my daughter and SIL, they do a lot of hiking with the grandkids and notice plants my SIL has researched. Hmm... Could be a great Christmas gift...

Also put the Runyan cards in my cart on AZ.

Glad to see you guys found these! I have a set of these, plus some of the other decks put out by the same guy. Andy Pratscher at Speedhook sent them to me and suggested I get in touch with the guy who printed them.

So I have been practicing with these cards that @cockeyedhunter gifted me when we first met. Thought this would be a good addition to this skills practice game @field-expedient got started. It is a good push for folks to get out and learn. So this is what I did for my birthday today.

Grabbed some equipment for just in case...

    Buy both.

I ordered a deck of western cards off ebay, got them and used them. The kids enjoyed them, so I ordered a deck for each of them. Those came yesterday... from ebay.

Buying both had been my first thought, too, but that doubles the amount of cards you're carrying around...

But, thinking about it some more, there's gotta be a pretty good chunk of overlap between the two. Like you said, Nature doesn't draw lines very well (except for when she does).

If one were to thin out all the duplicates, that would probably make the overall quantity a lot more manageable.

I think two decks is perfect if your on the line.
After you sort them out it'll be a custom made reference just for your specific area.
It's almost impossible to find a book that is exactly what you need.
I just happen to live 40 minutes from where Samuel Thayer used to live, so his books are prime for me but that's not the norm.

I need to buy a set of both Eastern and Western. That's been the only problem with my Peterson's Field Guide is it's Eastern and I live in Oklahoma! They need a "Central" version...

I went ahead and bought both. If/when they get here, I'll vet out the duplicates and report what the end result looks like.

Did you at least get a shipping notice? The shipping fee was low so I'm guessing it's coming by a slow delivery method. I ordered mine yesterday.

No, the only correspondence was an order confirmation. I sent an email inquiry yesterday after reviewing this thread.

    UPDATE.

Just received an email, the status of my order has been changed to Completed.

No tracking has been assigned yet.

I'm not sure what that means but it seems encouraging.

I just received that too. No shipping status or tracking number though.

I wrote to the store about a week ago after waiting about ten days without a shipping update, never heard back. Then I got a package in the mail today and was hopeful it was my plant cards.

I was disappointed at first because I thought there had been a mixup with the order. But then I saw a note attached that offered these as an apology because the plant cards are on backorder, and would be shipped when they arrived. Very cool and generous gift!

I ordered some stuff from Speedhook too, it all arrived yesterday.
He called me last night and said that he was having trouble fulfilling all the orders that came in because some items were on backorder.
Super nice guy, I think he just got flooded with orders that he wasn't expecting. Sounds like he has been bending over backwards to try and make it right with everyone.

Now that I managed to unintentionally derail FE's entire excellent thread......... I think we all owe him!

I say we all take our new cards and get our asses outside and do something with these cards in true FE fashion!

The plant ID cards are cool. It is really pretty cool that the company treated you so good. I will probably make out an order for those knot cards. For some reason I have a hard time remembering knots. Maybe I just don't use them enough IDK.
