I'd be down, if the scheduling allows. It's a couple hours from me.

I'll talk to my wife about this for sure. September is much more doable than August for sure.

Curious about the deal with the parking though, 6 cars isnt much. I know my wife and I will be carpooling for sure, are there any other options parking wise or is the 6 car limit about all that can be done

I won’t be able to make this one, sorry. I really would like to though. Just too far away. :(

I'm planning on being there. I'll be in my Hammock rig. I stand by my offer to bring 1 or 2 from Portland and north on the I-5 Corridor to Hwy 12. I have an Xterra so we need to practice "parsimonious" packing technique. PM me if interested. @CamoDeafie82? @Yippeethemagician? @Bill Siegle? Any others?

    OutnBacker is In.

Can't bring firewood or my Blackstone on a motorcycle, but I'll pay half the reserve fee.

Maybe; wife and I are planning out an official private wedding reception/party in that month, so it's a maybe for either myself, or the two of us. Bit of a distance for us

    Super cool.

I am tentatively interested. It will depend on work schedule, which I won't know for a few more weeks. And parking. ;)

Hey there. I looked up the NorthFork area on the Gifford-Pinchot Motor Vehicle Use Map 2019. Map 33 (pg 58 of 125 on my pdf viewer) shows the road designator as 2300129. The chart (pg 8 of 125) indicates it is open to all highway legal vehicles from 5/15/19 to 9/15/19. Elk site is at the end of 2300129 so even if the six (6) parking spaces are used, the following info applies:

    Parking
Motor vehicles may be parked within one vehicle length from the edge of the road surface when it is safe to do so
without causing damage to USDA Forest Service resources or facilities, unless prohibited by state law, a traffic sign, or an order (36 CFR 261.54).

Here's a Google aerial photo of the site showing the road and camp

Hey now, I like trees! They make shade and big groups of trees make rain. Just for this ^^ I will have to hug some of them to let them know we're not all oafs!

I'm reimbursing Bighat for 50% for North Fork. Saving for Miller would be a worthy thing.

Hey there. I understand the obstacles, and I would absolutely love to meet another Cascadian from the Northern reaches. The story of the PNW Summer GTG has not been written, obviously. Here is what @NevadaBlue wrote about his driving almost 700 miles each way to attend the Cascadia Regional GTG in May. 1st Annual Cascadia GTG, Nevadablue’s view. Many of the same folks will be at this one, many have other callings to answer. I hope that you will come and add to this story that hasn't been written yet! FWIW, I will be driving approx. 3 hours to this one myself.

    Warmest regards
    Woody

Scout Report - North Fork Elk Site.

I just got back from a 300 mile round trip to Elk Group Site. I'll color-in some of the info already posted as well as get some pics up.

Get to Randle. Go south across the river for about a mile, the road veers left. From that point, the first sign you will see for North Fork Campgrounds is 3 miles before you get there. When you get there, see a sign that says Group Sites and turn left onto the property. Elk Site is the last one up the 1/4 mile driveway.

The parking will easily accommodate 7 vehicles - maybe 8 or nine if they let us. There is also a lower area near the big dumpsters about 75ft away that may hold a few more.

The table and fire area is flat and wide open, with two large braziers and a sort-of-large stone ring that was obviously put there by campers. I assume it can be expanded by adding more rocks. There are , I think, four tables but I forgot to actually count them.

There are only 7 tent platforms of about 10x10 sq. They are all level, but the land is not - having a 10 degree slope towards the parking area, so smaller tents or late comers (like me) will have to Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome. Lots of big trees to hang hammocks from for you guys that like that sort of thing. Me? I'm bringing a John Deere 310 back hoe to fix the place right.

So, here's the pics of the layout - and one of your Scout, now suffering from Monkey Butt.

I might be rolling down the slope underneath you. So, if you hear me grunting and cursing in the middle of the night, stick a leg out so I have something to grab onto before I reach the parking lot.

    I was thinking about food...

Free for all Friday... Potluck Saturday, and big breakfast on Sunday... Does that work for everyone?

I'm always thinking about food, but I digress....

I'm arriving Saturday morning by motorcycle, so bringing extra chow will be a challenge. Some guys liked my mashed chickpeas at the Cascadia Event just past, so maybe I can make some up early before I leave. An alternative to mashed potatoes or hashbrown patties.

John shows up with a 5 gallon bucket of mashed chick peas hanging on his handle bars. DO NOT miss out on this. Yum!

I'd have to go with a 2.5gal bucket on each side or there could be issues. It'll likely be more like a 44 qt Coleman cooler, strapped to the trunk rack.

Still hoping to make it, but won't know for another week or two - schedule is clear, but my wife broke her leg/dislocated angke last friday and had surgery Wed so all depends on her recovery and whether she can deal with the dogs, irrigation etc. Will have a better idea after her follow-up a week from tuesday. Recovery is going well so far so I'm optimistic
