    The recent watch thread got me thinking there must be pocket watch folks here....
    Is there already a thread? (Yes, I searched....)
    I have always been fascinated by them.

    I'd like to get a nice pocket watch, but can't really justify the $50. Maybe when I come across a quality timepiece at the right price...

    Nice watches.
    I worked with a pocket watch collector, long ago. He tried to teach me why one watch would be worth, maybe $200, and the one beside it might be worth $700, or $800. I didn’t learn much, but I do admire the workmanship.

    Do you have any amber ones?

    I have my great grandfathers. The case is quite large, which I was told is typical of the older watches. The spring is broken so unfortunately it doesn't run. I'd like to get it into a repairman at some point to see how much a repair would cost and see what I can learn about it. Another interesting point is that the engraving is mostly worn off the back. He was a farmer and worked like a dog, so I'm thinking perhaps he carried it everyday and it saw hard use? Anyway, I'll try to find a time to post pictures when I'm home from work. I would welcome any knowledge I can gain here about it.

    I originally recieved the watch that is in the belt fob as a gift for hs graduation from my grand dad. I scratched the lens using it everyday as a landscaper (couldn't wear watches as I would break them all the time) - once grand dad passed I felt bad and bought one for myself just before they quit making them. No clue what they are worth but I know they don't make em anymore.

    I've been on the lookout for 992 or a Waltham Vanguard. I don't want to buy online though. Any tips on finding these gems? I'd also be happy to find a Ball from the 50's. Just looking for one the more accessible Railroad Standards.

    I have always had a fascination with them too, but have never owned a decent mechanical one.

    @GillyGilligan

    Your Swiss Army is as good as quartz pocket watches ever got, my opinion. I had 4-5 of the leather covered boogers at one time, including the surpassingly scarce black-faced variant. Gave them away, now have one well used sample, which gets weekend and travel use...a fair bit of those.

    I have this key wind/key set Zenith watch that was manufactured in the third quarter of the 19th century. The Zenith Watch Company was started in Switzerland about 1865 by J. Favre Jacot. I gave $75.00 for it. It was in a coffee can with a bunch of other old pocket watches under the counter of an old jewelry store on the main street. It was the only one with a chain and key. I had it fixed up, cleaned, and lubricated which cost another $115.00. So for less than $200.00 I got an antique watch that keeps perfect time. It’s like history beating in the palm of your hand.
