I'm addicted to scavenging. Can't help about once a week just stopping and walking along the road to see what I find. On one recent foray, which was just about a 20 yard section of highway, I found the usual treasures, enough really to make a full set of woodworking tools.... I decided to start with the coil spring, and turn a piece of it into a sloyd knife, an integral style. In the spirit of true scrounge, no power tools were used to make it...

My forge is made from a fire extinguisher also scavenged from the side of the highway...

    Forged blade...

    After hand filing....

    The finished knife...

And the first carving project out of mesquite wood...

I came because of the thread title, and stayed for the thread itself, both are excellent.
    Nice job man!

my name is john, and i, too, am a scrounge-aholic.

i do like that knife and the spoon, there, but i REALLY like the chisel. i made one similar out of electric motor shaft but i made it too wide and it has limited uses(kuksas). i like yours. the width, the bend, the handle. that's an heirloom tool right there. keep at it.

Thanks, John... kindred soul... I like your gouge. It looks like an effective design. That gouge in my pic was made from an old hay rake tine. It's carved a lot of spoons. I plan to make another one from the other piece of that coil spring.

I've been following your work for a while and you are a man after my own heart. I am a scrounger my self and will always pick up pieces of metal. I have a small blacksmith shop that is full of bits and pieces to use in projects. I have taught two young men to blacksmith using hand tools and the old ways of metal fabrication. I tell them that we can use electric tool once we learn the way the old blacksmiths did the same process. Your work is great and it causes met to try to make similar tools. I have only carved one spoon, but I need to do more to bring my skills up. Thank you again for your willingness to share.

We got our camping trip rained out again so had to make best of it at the forge.
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and I was really taken with chisel that @forginhill made that i had to make another attempt, myself. These are just roughed out shapes and still gotta put a bend in the chisel, finish shaping and heat treating and handle but here is my scrounged material 5160 coil-spring takes on your fine pieces. the knife is my largest attempt with about a 7-1/2" blade.
