Thomas Elpel, who many here are familiar with, made a dugout canoe with the help of Churchill Clark (the great-great-great-great grandson of Captain William Clark). He is currently retracing a portion of the Lewis & Clark Expedition which he is calling the “Missouri River Corps of Rediscovery” in the canoe.

This is a 2,341 mile journey that will take 6 months. On his site Elpel wrote "My goal is to lead a Corps of Rediscovery whose mission isn't merely to race to the end, but rather to paddle the Missouri River as a conduit for exploring the land and meeting its inhabitants. Together, we'll explore the geographical landscape and geology, along with the indigenous and newly integrated flora, fauna, and human habitations."

This video shows how they made the canoe.

Here's an article from the Montana Standard which is supposed to be updated weekly with info on the trip.

For the canoes maiden voyage they took it on a 6 day 80 mile trip down the Marias River.
