this is my favorite plinking gun. It’s got a great scope, shoots extremely accurately.. and I’m thinking it would be fun to make some upgrades. Nothing crazy expensive...

    Ideas? Pics?

If its a newer 10/22 with plastic guts, throw 'em away and replace with vintage steel trigger, ect.

Back when they still made them with better parts I passed on an older one (for that time) and have been kicking myself for it ever since. I also kick myself for not doing a couple 10/22 builds when they were still fairly cheap to do.

I hear ya. I fell into enough parts to put one together complete with scope for less than $75.00. Gave it to my then girlfriend. Smart move.

I have a Takedown with the BX trigger and Tech sights. Added two bx25 magazines in the rifle case and it's my truck gun.

I bought a 10/22 a few years back on a Walmart closeout I've been thinking of modifying for a winter project so I'm watching the thread.

Speaking of girlfriends I gave one a Russian SKS mint condition. It only cost me $110 but still I wish I had it back now.

Auto bolt release, either DIY or $10 to buy.

Few bucks for a bolt buffer.

Lots of charging handles out there in many designs. Most just add looks but some come with polished recoil spring guides and even different springs to help tune the action.

Target bolt will have tighter headspace for better accuracy and a pinned firing pin for reliable ignition and better accuracy.

VQ or KIDD extractor if you're extractor ever had problems.

    Bedding action to stock.

    Trigger group or job.

Pile of Ruger mags and choice of ammo.

If your scope will clear it, iron Tech sights, and either Volquartsen or BX trigger group. Perhaps an AR post/wings if you do the Tech sights. Don't go crazy with drums, lasers, or maximum freaky stocks. You can easily trick out a 10/22 with double or triple it's original cost. I know two guys that have just thrown dollars at it, without learning it, and are vaguely dissatisfied because it "doesn't look like that one on Youtube".

Don't do that, do a few things to improve it's accuracy and feel, and shoot it a lot after each piece is changed. It's a good exercise to make a bolt buffer with some aquarium tubing. Some say it's good to polish the receiver if it's a newer one, others say "just shoot it a lot, it will happen". Don't take a Dremel to the insides.

Here is a great ongoing story about a guy that spent a lot of time (and $$$) building four very different 10/22s.

Following. I’ve got an older 10/22 I picked up at a pawn shop years ago. Every once in a while I think about modifying it.

    I kept mine simple.
    -Recoil buffer
    -larger charging handle
    -polished bolt
    -trigger job
    -lapped the crown
    -sights
Spent under $100 for all of it, and made it a real joy to shoot.
Since you have a scope, just focus in the first five.
Its easy to get caught up in 10/22 mods that never end.
    Keep it simple.

other than the obigatory wiping of the trigg'r parts w/ a fish hook sharpening stone just learn to shoot what you have

the 10/22 is a remarkably good plinker and meat harvester

Here's a blurb that I've used for a long time on many different boards. These are the upgrades/mods I've settled into for the 10/22s that I and my kids use. They are geared as Appleseed LTR but will make a good all around shooter.

    ***********************************************************************
Are you scoping it or sticking with iron sights?
If iron sights, take a look at Tech-Sights (http://www.tech-sights.com/ruger3.htm)
    or
NoDak Spud NDS-26 Rear Sight (http://www.nodakspud.com/NDS-22.htm)
Use the NDS-23 front sight base for .920" bull barrels.
Use the NDS-40 front sight base for standard factory contour barrels.

Standard upgrades for any and all 10/22's I've bought so far for self and kids:

    * Volquartsen Exact Edge Extractor (http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=363360)
If there are any issues feeding different ammo, this has solved them for me.

    * Volquartsen Recoil Buffer (http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=572337)
Quiets the noise as the bolt cycles and saves a little wear and tear on the receiver.

    * Volquartsen Extended Magazine Release (http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=666996)
Much easier to operate than factory mag release.

    * Volquartsen Automatic Bolt Release (http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=688102)
Much easier to operate than factory bolt release.

    * BlackHawk Lok-Down Sling Swivels 1-1/4" Steel Blue (http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productnumber=684015)
Lets you use the sling mentioned below as hasty, hasty hasty, or loop.

    * Uncle Mike's Sling Swivel Stud 115 RGS Set (http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productnumber=887160)

    * USGI Issue Sling (http://www.appleseedstore.flyingcart.com/?p=detail&pid=10&cat_id=0)
Slings just aren't for carrying the rifle.

    * Tech-Sights TSR200 Aperture Sight (http://www.tech-sights.com/ruger3.htm)
Peep sights similar to those on an AR style rifle. Allows windage and elevation adjustments unlike factory sights.

    * Mags, you can never have enough mags. This applies to any rifle though.

    * Ammo, you can never have enough ammo. This applies to any rifle though.

DITTO! I got their tier 2 trigger job and find it to be worth every dime! I also got an aftermarket charging handle and magazine release (extended lever). I find myself unintentionally dropping a magazine with the extended lever. I may review my options for replacing that one. I also turned my own bolt buffer out of UHMW plastic rod stock... just because I can. I put a Vortex 2-7 x 33 scope on. I don't shoot much paper or plink, but it is a squirrel killing machine now.

If you have kids or use it to teach folks, a single shot magazine adaptee exists. No idea where to find one today.

I agree. The 455 is a replacement to the superior 452 and NEITHER is a semi auto so not a apples to apples comparison!!

I like cz allot but there semis are have neen knunky. I have a 455 22 mag and will trade it off when I run across s 452 in mag to replace it.

Ditto on the BX trigger pack, and the Tech Sights. I also found that the easy user mod to make the bolt release on pulling back the bolt, and a cheap extended magazine release lever additions that make shooting my Ruger 10-22 TD all the greater fun!

    Classic set-up of the 1980s:

    Plastic side folding stock.
Rear aperture sight. Replacement front sight if needed. In 2018 I'd do Tech sights.
    Sling. Nylon typically.
    Oversized magazine release.
    Big magazine.

Done correctly, it would ride unobtrusively in a canoe or small pickup. Most got a surplus bag for it, folded. Maybe an M60 barrel bag?

My 10/22is purely a hunting rifle so my mods are minor and boring,

I changed the factory takedown screw to a hex head stainless one as allen keys are small and fit it my field kits.

I installed a tuffer buffer rod. It greatly reduces the slap of the action and takes alot of action noise away when using subs.

I purchased a weaver rail and had my gun smith replace the tiny factory screws with large hex heads for a very robust rail to action join.

I stripped the varnish off the factory stock, sanded it to 1000grit, free floated the barrel and hand rubbed coat after coat of oil into the stock. Underneath the horrible varnish was a nice hunk of walnut. it came out stunning. I finished it off by screwing and epoxying a couple of sling studs into it.

I’ve been on a picture deleting kick lately and I dumped the two 10/22’s I have built up. I put a Boyd’s skeleton stock on one with a Green Mountain reverse taper weight forward barrel, and upgraded trigger, bolt, magazine release block. About all that is left of the original is the receiver, it’s an accurate thing now, but carries really well. The other has a Reinhart Fagan fully adjustable graphite stock and butt plate, mid weight Green Mountain Barrel and similar operating components. It’s another accurate rifle, but strictly a range/competition rifle. I have used it only to shoot eggs, and lollipops.

The problem with these adult tinker toys is you quickly spend many times what the rifle was worth, and most people will not pay what you have into it on the secondary market. Either they don’t understand what is into them, or they want to do it themselves.

Just did 2 NFA Form 1 short barreled shotguns. The one on the Maverick, the parts cost more than the gun, and so did the tax stamp. But I enjoy what I have now, and figure I'll just keep it the rest of my life.

I recommend a 10/22 charger because it's legally a pistol but you can put a rifle barrel and stock on if you want later.

Sorry for the poor pic quality...
I wouldn't say this was my favorite upgrade but about 10 years ago I got a little obsessed one winter with seeing how far I could accurately shoot a 22lr. I think I gave up at 100 yards...
Boyds stock and a inexpensive BSA BDC scope. Fun but admittedly kind of ridiculous.
