Although this was right on the Chattooga river, it was close to big bend falls and the trail. Right along the river, all the places to camp were surrounded by widow makers because of people chopping around the trees and all of the wood good for burning was gone.

    Palmetto Trail / Macedonia Lake

Our SC Bushcraft meet will be along the Palmetto Trail in Union County at Macedonia Lake. This is a diverse hardwood forest with plenty of natural resources (cedar, pine, oak, walnut, hickory, etc.). We have to camp ½ mile from the parking area that is at the lake. So we will head South on the Palmetto Trail for a short hike and then find a suitable camping area along Johns Creek. Hiking is rated easy to moderate.

Water sources are the lake and Johns Creek. Filter, chemical treatment, or boiling are a must for this area. Bring bug repellent in case the temps don’t get low enough to drive the mosquitoes away.

Fishing is allowed. This is also the first weekend of Primitive Weapon deer hunting season and this is a Wildlife Management Area (SCDNR laws & regulations are to be obeyed). It is recommended that you wear something orange so as not to be mistaken for game. WKS1977 and I hiked here last week and a bald eagle flew over the lake as we were fishing with our hand-lines.

    Directions:

    1. From I-26 take Exit 44 to SC-49 N/Union Hwy

    2. Head North toward Union on SC-49 N/Union Hwy for about 8 miles (Pass through Cross Anchor).

    3. At Cross Keys turn right on Old Buncombe Rd. Hwy 49 curves to the left and Old Buncombe Rd. bears right.

    4. Go to the 1st Stop Sign and Turn right onto Jones Ford Rd/State Rd S-44-22. Drive about 2 miles and the Macedonia Lake sign will be on the Left. Follow this road to the parking area.

    5. From the parking area, walk right toward the dam, The Palmetto Trail (marked with a sign) turns right from the edge of the dam.

    6. There is no designated camping area. We will camp off the trail to the left toward Johns Creek along the flat bottom.

    Search Google Maps for:
Macedonia Cemetery, Union, South Carolina 29379
Then zoom out and you will see the access road and lake just south of this map point.

Here is a link to a map of this section of the Palmetto Trail.

    Directions to New Campsite

WKS and I scouted for a campsite today along Johns Creek--no good--swarms of mosquitoes! But we found a good place with none of the biters. Here are your new directions--get your compass ready....

    1. Leave the parking lot and proceed to the dam. Turn left and cross the dam toward the pine thicket on the opposite side.

    2. As you are crossing the dam look straight ahead at the first large pine and go to it. A natural game trail runs to the left of the big pine.

    3. Starting at the pine...head roughly 70 deg. NE following the game trail for 26 paces (1 pace = left-right-left).

    4. Turn slightly to the left to roughly 35 deg. NE and walk through the woods for 55 paces.

    5. You will find the campsite marked with a stick tripod and a rock fire ring. WKS harvested some fatwood and we left it in the fire ring if you want to get a fire started.

The pines keep the mosquitoes away and there is plenty of firewood in the area. I had my rod & reel and caught a small white bass in the lake. WKS and I used our alchohol stoves and fixed some coffee. This is a great area (IMHO).

Does the government shutdown affect this get together in any way, since it is in a national forest? ;-)

I have time off from work and plan to be there.

The shutdown will not affect us at all. Spoke with Enoree district management on the phone. We are good to go.

It was really nice to camp with people who knew what they were doing and did not look to me with a million questions. If something needed to get done, someone was willing to do it, and generally got it done before someone else said something about it. Everyone was also very well prepared. No one was lacking for anything, or asking me to borrow gear or food.

A very nice experience in the woods.....and there were plenty of knifes to look at. I think everyone had at least 3 blades. That was totally awesome.

It was great to meet everyone and get away from the madness of city life.
Got to check out some cool gear and learned that boiling all your water for drinking takes a very, very long time to cool, in order to enjoy drinking it...lol.
I forsee a water filter in my future. :)

I didn't know this was happening. I couldn't have gotten away, though. It's not my weekend off. I'd really like to join in on the next meet up. Hope everyone had fun.

I had a great time as always. Learned alot from Martin, WKS, and Bosco with their hammock setups. Grizzix helped me begin to learn bowdrill and Joe helped with hand drill stuff. Really happy to see some new guys coming out and look forward to meeting more new members.

if anyone has ideas about the spring meet feel free to share. I think we had the last one in april, if thats suitable for everyone. Im excited about it already as some new folks have already expressed interest in being there!

thanks for posting up the pics guys!

Well this is just a touch off subject, and a touch on. I had a great time as always and it was very good to see old friends and meet new ones. Got my head cleared, went back to school today and worked electronic problems that I couldn't do on Fri. Who says dirttime isn't good for you. Kimber you did a good job of picking a spot and organization as always. I, and i'm sure the others thank you greatly brother. I also learned not to use cheap paracord for a hammock when my backside hit the ground. joe

That spider was in someone else's setup. I used a bug net in order to avoid the spider and inspect issues. HF, as MartinDWhite. Hammocks are the only way to spend a night out IMHO.

the jocassee gorges run into North Carolina. Looks like this is the first access in South Carolina. I'd like to get some thoughts on this.

We could meet at the parking area and start hiking. Its not a long hike. Looks like there are multiple falls to see and maybe some fishing along the river.

EDIT- APPARENTLY WE CAN NOT CAMP IN THIS AREA. SEARCHING FOR MORE NOW.

Looks like traveling north on 107... Just past state road 413 there is a parking area on your left. I believe this is the trail head. We then proceed west towards the chatooga. Im still doing some research and will obtain permits for the trip.

    Trail markers

In case anyone else can make it at a later time or single day; There will be orange trail markers marking the way to camp once we reach the bad creek section of this trail. Just a heads up as we will most likely not be camping right on the trail.

Thanks. A compass bearing written on each flag to the next one would be super sweet.

18 miles and 2 nights in the woods with my kids was GREAT. We saw 2 orange markers, Wally, John, and several other hikers, but never meet up with the intended group of bushcraft people. A complete write will be forth coming.

Next time THERE MUST BE MORE CLEAR DIRECTIONS!
