I finally got my hands on some 1060 and forged my first axe with it today.

    The starting stock was about 18oz, 3/4 x 1 x 5 1/4

    layout 1 lb 1060 axe 8-25-19l.jpg

    I upset it to about 4 1/2 "

    upset 1 lb 1060 axe 8-25-19L.jpg

    Punched the eye

    punched 1 lb 1060 axe 8-25-Ljpg.jpg

and then drifted the eye and forged to rough shape. Sorry but didn't get any pics during those steps.

Here is the rough forged axe. Its is being annealed to relieve stress and get reading for grinding and heat treat. Its about 4 1/2 " with 3" cutting edge.

Got a few minutes in the shop yesterday and started the initial clean up and shaping. I couldn't decide if I am going to leave the dark oxide layer on this one or not and did a little more cleanup after this pic. I'll have to wait and see how it develops. It a little under a LB now.

COOL! I like the shape. What kind of handle will you put on it?

Thanks! I haven’t really decided. You have a suggestion?

I have forged a few more. The top one is the latest. It’s it is still as forged, no clean up yet. The middle is the 2nd. I thinking about reshaping into more of a
Viking profile. The bottom one is the original axe in this thread. I decided the bit was too thick and opted to forge it thinner versus grind thus the new solid oxide layer.

I'm seeing a 13 or 14 inch pretty straight oval handled belt hatchet.

I had been thinking the same thing. Good thing is, I have a few heads so can try some variations. If I go even more toward the Viking shape I think it will demand a straight handle.

Cleaned up the profile on the middle one. Didn’t go for the extreme Viking profile.

Also started on A more traditional style camp axe WIP this morning. It’s in the style of the Colclesser axe carried by Kephart. 12 oz , 4 1/2” long. Top profile needs to be cleaned up, marked with the chalk line. It’s annealing right now.

Forged a new drift today that can be used for larger axes, so of course had to forge and axe to try it out.

The axe still needs to be ground and the shape refined, but I like how it turned out.

Starting on handles for some of the small axes. This one is about 11 inches. Still more sanding and shaping to do. I’m thinking about giving a couple octagonal handles a go.

Working on a decent sized axe this morning. About 1 1/2 lbs. Time for rough grinding and shaping ( you can see chalk lines of profile).

The plan is to start finishing up axes this weekend now that I have handle material in.

    Few more handles under way.

13” for the axes just about 1 lb

    4504B361-3541-42F1-AFF6-7B6FF6F0B07A.jpeg

And 16” for over 1 lb

    B2CFD6FB-0511-4B48-9E62-2C8D23C24ADF.jpeg

Still have more finish work to do but planning to leave these octagonal and doing a light char.

Initial grinding is done and thermal cycling complete. Working on handles and will be doing heat treat shortly. For those waiting should be all done by next weekend , I can’t rush handle fitting and final grinding.

Here is the 1lb carver just about done.

Are you putting a maker's mark on them? Too nice not to have them IMO.

Thanks. No makers mark. I bought one some time ago and decided I didn't like it. I need to buy another but can't seem to settle on a design.
