Never by holding my pants over a fire. By sitting fireside, yes.

    ...what are they doing?

    Mostly socks.

But I did have a picture of a buddy smoking his pants after a soggy hike in after post-holing in wet snow to get to a campsite. He borrowed another buddies snow pants and then stripped off his to try and dry them out over the fire.

There is a fine line between “smoking” and straight up burning if you aren’t mindful, lol.

The only way to win a wet atmosphere is not getting wet to begin with ,
OR have enough body heat in movement to keep one's self warm, but that can only last for so long .

Last so long indeed.. At the night prior to this point we were pushing just to push. I was the only one with the shakes at the end of the day/night, but that was because the next morning was 'supposed' to be more torrents and I wanted a dry change at that stop. Hindsight tells me that I should have geared out when we struck camp. But good hearty food, a warm dry sleeping bag and a little Johnny Walker kept me level.

That's about as bad as Granny Clampett, smoking crawdads.
