    Hey all!

Just thought I’d show you guys an el-cheapo shelter I made today. I had an old SOL poncho and two person blanket laying around, so I decided to get in some practice.

Using the blanket, I reinforced the corners with Duct tape. I staked the back two corners taught, then brought in the front two and stakes them. This leaves slack in the middle. I reinforced the “apex” with tape and used a trekking pole to open the shelter up. The reflective side was facing out due to the heat.

I then took the poncho and cut from the armholes down, turning it in to a small tarp. I used this as a groundcloth for the shelter.

I climbed in and, surprisingly, I was able to lay down straight. I am 6 foot 1 so that was shocking to me. My hair and toes touched the very edge, but still.

This shelter is very easy to set up, offers great protection, and is cool/warm depending on which side you use. Face the opening to a tree and you have almost 360 coverage. You can even fit two people if you had to. You would probably want to be married to the other person though!

How about you guys? Are you beating the heat with any emergency shelter setups? What are your experiences with SOL shelters? Let’s see ‘em!

Nope. When it's hot, I'm in the rear with the beer. ;)

But that does look to be a cool setup (no pun intended).

I have something similar (not sure if it is an SOL product) and i’ve never used it.
It was heavy and bulky to carry.
