I have family in Sally, I used to spend my summers there when I was a kid. I am from just across the border in Augusta.

Thanks for the pics Mahaney. Nice looking camp you had there. Do you like using a hammock?

Nice pics Mahaney, good to see another "hanger" in the group!

Is anyone here besides me ever free during the week for an overnighter?

BTW, for you Columbia area guys; Big Rock Outfitters is closing its' doors on Oct 30. Bummer, BUT they are having a 60% off sale on everything in store! I am heading over this afternoon to load up on some gear that I absolutely dont need... :)

Dont worry about buddy, I was thinking about it on the way up on how we would know each other. We probably passed each other somewhere. Congaree is a hell of alot closer to me, just checking it out on-line, they say no fires.....what fun is that? We will have to meet up somewhere easier to get to next time and follow each other. Thanks for trying though.

Wonder if they count "contained fires" as ok. I have been places where my hobo stove was accepted, although frowned on.

How does next week sound? I only have a few more chances to get out before I get uber-busy end of this month.

Good deal Jeffery! Glad to have you here man. I am in Florence, well actually Effingham just south of Florence. I go to Sugarloaf at least once or twice a year. I like it up there. Glad you joined up here you will like it. Their is a LOT of knowledgeable people here. If you haven't already done so, drop by the introductions and introduce yourself and tell us a little about you. I'll guarantee you'll get a warm reception, thats just the way folks are here.

So, with a few new faces, anyone think its time to make another attempt at a get-together? How about Congaree either the weekend of December 17-19, or during the first weekend of January? (Jan 7-9)

    congaree update

OK guys, I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. I had the chance to stop by the Congaree NP last week and check it out a little. It looks pretty nice. Here is what I found out....
    1. No open fire when primitive camping. This includes Dakota pits.
    2. You have to get a permit from the office to camp, this is pretty easy to do however because they are open everyday.
    3. There are two main area where you can have large groups with fires. They are basically small fields with a few picnic tables and fire rings.
    4. It looks like a large amount of their business is boy scout troops from what
I saw. This could be good or bad depending on the kids.....and the leaders.

I dont know when I'll get another kitchen pass. But I am sure the wifey will let me go if we get a large enough group together.

Just say when. And I have no problem sharing part of a field with scouts. I was one, once. The hikes and campouts are still cherished memories.

(And I "kinda" have an 8 year old, ready and willing to jump right in!)

Hope they don't mind all the knives...

But yea, just say when. I have a bunch of new hammock gear, gotta take it out and test it out.

Forecast is for a nice, cold, rainy weekend. Who wants to meet in Congaree and test some bushy survival skills? (or at least hang out by the fire?) I am seriously thinking of hopping out for an overnighter, probably saturday/sunday.

Anyone crazy enough to do this? (besides me, that is)

Was thinking about that the other day. What do you think about Sandhill State Park at Sugarloaf Mnt. near McBee. Been there many times and I like it.

Thanks all... Has been many years since my last pack out... Most of what I have is centered around hunting... One day hunting trip with limited packing on distance... Warm boots that are heavy... Limited light weight pack in gear.... In a hunting environment... I am good for a week... Pack in any distance, or travel per day... I have real weight issues.. Well... Being in the south.. Probably have some cold weather deficiencies as well... But... No better place to shake that out than in the woods!,

No worries. I would think that we can find something that doesnt require a long hike in. And around these parts the lowest temperature we can reasonably expect is in the high 20's, even this time of year. A fairly warm bag (or two not so warm bags nested together!), a good fire, and you are set!

I am i big fan of UL gear, sure. But getting out is what matters, not what stuff you get out with, yanno? And I find I usually rely far more on skills than gear anyway, and this place is simply fantastic for finding new skills and honing existing ones.

    You'll do fine.

I have been to Sandhills State Park many times. It's located near McBee, SC. No hiking involved you can drive in. Fire only in designated fire pit. They have a pond and have latrine's through out. So, it's not primitive but it's a nice place. There are three areas in particular, spots #10, 11 and 12 that are grouped together and are somewhat wooded and somewhat separated from the others. There is a charge of $10.00 per site per night which is cheap and could be divided up among everyone. If this sounds like a place we would like to have a meet I will arrange it. I will be at Terry's school in NC March 11,12 and 13 and out of town Feb 4, 5 and 6 but other than that I'm game.

I will also repost this as a seperate thread here in the SC section.

I was hoping to get to go down to Hunting Island for some kayaking and crabbing, but with my school, wife's school, all the kids in school, and baby due in July, 4 hours down for a weekend of kayaking is out for me.

It's getting close to the schools letting out and getting hotter, anyone interested in a weekend get together and a suggestion for location? Last time we suggested Congaree.
