anyone carry spices? If so what and how? I’m wanting to find a smaller more compact way. I carry 6 spices; salt, pepper, garlic powder, seasoned salt, old bay and red eyed hog. I use the MSR spice holders that are 2 in one so only 3. I was linked to some plastic 5 ml jars maybe I’ll try those but wanted to see others.

Make your own spice mixes. I make my own curry spice and like to use that on a lot. I also use cardamom based spices for drinks and sweeter foods. Masala spice mixes are also very good. I like to use ziplocs or plastic match safes. I bought a boatload of them when they were on sale.

I mix some of the six I carry. They work pretty good for me. I want to reduce bulk a little so I can add cinnamon for oatmeal etc. right now the container I use are “large” and hold far more than needed.

You can also mix the spices with your food before you go out. It would be easy to mix cinnamon with oatmeal before hitting the trail.

I probably could for the oatmeal. But most of my other meals I like I wouldn’t really be able too

Try using those cheap orange floating match safes, they are great for holding small amounts of spices.

Lemon pepper and seasoning salt are my go to's. I saw a post here with a youtube link. It was two screw tops from pop bottles glued together. Salt on one side, pepper on the other.

I found some plastic glitter tubes for $1 somewhere (Michaels, Walmart, Hobby Lobby, I don't remember). Empty and wash them well, add your own spices. They fit in an Altoid tin. I glued a couple pieces of craft foam sheet in strategic places to prevent rattling (basically on all 6 sides of the tin).

I use Naglene's. They are nigh to indestructible and absolute waterproof. The smaller ones here are 1 oz, or about 1 tablespoon of dry ingredients. The larger one ( spiced flour here) is 2 oz or about 2 1/2 tablespoons. The 1 oz size has been on several week long kayak trips and was more than enough.

I bought 5ml plastic bottles with lids online for $6 or $7. I can fit 6 into an Altoids tin plus 2 bullion cubes. I carry salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika and cayenne pepper.

I use these, but with Gatorade caps so they're more sizable.

Just hot sauce. But if they made mini bottles of fish sauce I'd carry that too.

I use the nalgene for my soap, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, honey, cooking oil etc. I hadn’t thought of getting some for spices. I think I would trust their quality more than I would trust others

That’s kinda what I was looking at.

    Thanks that’s neat!

I carry several oz of hot sauce in a Nalgene bottle, I feel like a pilots flask would be better lol. I use the little plastic nalgene a like in @anrkst6973 post for my hot sauce and “fish sauce”

Yea I like those, but I want more modern, screw on caps and probably not glass.

I've got three little DIY spice kits.

The first is a mish-mash in an Altoids tin: salt and pepper (the plastic containers came from the dollar store), chicken bullion, onion & garlic powder (that plastic container originally held cinnamon flavoured tooth picks), the straws contain Montreal steak spice and Old Bay, and the chicken ramen seasoning pack has been replace by Sriracha and dried chili peppers.

    P2180119.JPG

The second is in a sweets tin that's the same size as an Altoids tin. I found little glass vials at the dollar store and they're holding salt, pepper, onion & garlic, and Old Bay. There's usually a pack of hot sauce and one of dried chili peppers in there as well.

    P4130828.JPG

The third one is in a Shokakola tin, with smaller glass vials from the dollar store. It's got onion, garlic, Old Bay, Montreal steak spice, chili powder, and Chinese 5 spice.

If you skip ahead to about 6:25 of this, the vials in this little kit look very cool. Plastic with screw on caps!

I really like to cook and often have real cookable ingredients so I carry multiple spice bottles. I also know that "caca happens", even inside a waterproof bag if your mess kit goes underwater ( along with you, your kayak, and everything you own ;). ) you might have wet gear. I trust my Naglene's. They have proven themselves.

I like those jac. At one time I had a tin designed to hold a pack of cigarettes ( supposedly to make them crush proof) , that was used in much the same way as yours. I lined it with some very thin black foam, like less than a millimeter thick stuff I found in a crafting store. Prevented the contents from rattling around. If the additional thickness makes the tin hard to close or want to pop open just use a ranger band to secure it.

I wish I could find some of those little glass vials at our local dollar store. I'm going to have to go on the hunt!

Sweet I’m going to the dollar store. I just ordered some of that chocolate so I’m excited for the tins.

I will watch the video at lunch

I like the nalgene, that’s what I use for liquid even have a larger 4 oz for my alcohol stove. I’m definitely going to see if they have like a 1/4 oz

I’m going to hunt for them if I find them I’ll let you know

    You're not helping! lol
I was going to place an order with Vareusteleka last month including some of that chocolate and didn't do it after needing to put $800 into the truck. Maybe after the next logging check...

Found these. They are the leak proof nalgene style. 1.6” tall should fit in a tin fine. Less than $1 each. Holds 1/8 ounce so should be plenty for a normal weekend of meals.

    I have two spice kits.

    One I bought from Townsends...

    https://www.townsends.us/collection...cellaneous/products/pocket-spice-psb20-p-1066
    [IMG]

    The other I put together myself, but I do not yet have a picture...it consists of two parts. I call it the "Tactical Spice Kit";

    1. A shotgun shell holder, like this.
    https://www.amazon.com/FUNANASUN-Bu...+SHELL+HOLDER&qid=1560362437&s=gateway&sr=8-6

    2. 15ML bottles, like this
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MT1MSG3/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

15ML bottles fit perfectly into the shotshell holder. I prefer plastic bottles with screw tops, but you can get glass ones, or ones with cork tops, if preferred.

    EDIT:

    My preferred spices;

    1. Himalayan Salt
    2. Black Pepper
    3. Red Pepper
    4. Garlic Powder
    5. Italian Spices
    6. Old Bay Seasoning

These 6 seem to cover most needs, and they are what I use at home the most, anyway.

That's a great find right there! I did some data searching and they are supposed to be 16mm outer diameter, which should fit perfectly in an Altoids tin.

I'm in for a dozen as well!

I'm a sucker for little vials and pouches and whatnot

Actually, they're basically the same price in whatever quantity.

They come out to a $1 each roughly right? If each of us goes a flat $20 that gets the order done. Does it come out to a divisible by 3 number of bottles so shares are equal? I can alway find a use for these....

Yes it would be 24 each. They are at $58 for the 72 so $20 each would cover that and shipping from me to you. Let me know if you guys want to. They come out to 80 cents each.

And as a bonus, you don’t have to carry cilantro! Dual use!

Just kidding, I live cilantro. The wife says it tastes like soap. I understand it’s a genetic thing. She can also roll her tongue and I can’t roll mine, I think my family evolved out of that.

Personally, I’d rather enjoy cilantro than roll my tongue, so I win.
