Any one interested in a weekend camping trip. Some time in May or June. I was thinking Wildcat Hollow. North of Burr Oak Lake.

Anyone think of any kind of friendly contest we can have? Or a bushcraft item we can bring parts for to build. If someone would to donate something for a award I can help cover some of the cost.

Count me in, and my wife as a "maybe". My weekends should all be good from now through June. I'd be able to drive out Friday evening or Saturday morning from Dayton. I can bring a Mora as a small prize item...? Also interested in any kind of trade blanket on sat/sun...

For anyone interested, I'm also planning to backpack Red River Gorge next weekend (4/22 overnight) so hit me up if heading that way. Planning at least one more trip there this summer too - when all those wild blueberries start ripening. :)

I could be in. Is this a family friendly camp? I might want to take my 12 and 13 year old.

I could make it on May 27 weekend. Between the kid's sports and my wife's 5k races I barely get a Saturday all year. You know what will happen though.....come the week before, 5 discs in my back will decide to herniate or I'll get hit with the plague or typhus or something stupid.

Anyway, don't schedule around me but that would be the time I could make it.

Weekend of 5/27 then? Works for me (probably).
Most other weekends before 7/1 are good too.
    I'm all for family-friendly.
What part of WNF are we planning to occupy?

Ok guys May 27th it is for sure, I was thinking wild cat hollow, I know from the parking lot if you take the right hand trail there are camp sites along through there and if I remember correctly there is a site that is pretty good size about .25 miles in on the right. If any one knows of a better place or has more information about this one.

I don't think there should be any issues with bringing in family, I think we can all be responsible adults. I might have a flask with me, lets just all agree if you want to do anything that might be questionable we just hike away's from the kids. The lake is not to far from there you can easily drive down from the trial and fish, there is a store there you can get the basic snacks bait and pop or soda depending on where your from sense it is memorial day weekend I would try and come early just to make sure can get a spot, I ma going do Friday if anyone else want to come doe then.

I had to commit to a work trip today - I'll be in Texas for a week starting 5/27. I can meet up almost any *other* weekend before July 1, but y'all should go with whatever date gets a consensus...

Any interest in trade blanket again?
I could clear some closet space. None of it is hand made or all that unique; just extra knives, lights, cook sets, stoves, bags, fishing gear, winter clothing (mil surplus), etc... some of which I'd be happy to put toward some kind of contest. Best campfire story might be a good one...

Not looking to run a business or anything; just collected too much extra/redundant gear. Spring cleaning, I guess.

Well we are close, and hopefully the weather is good, except for the rain this has been some pretty nice weather. Here is the address to the trail head where we will all park

Wayne National Forest, Co Rd 58, Glouster, OH 45732
    Directions
Directions: To access this trailhead, take State Route 13 north from Athens. Turn at the sign past Tom Jenkins dam. There are two exits, CR 16 (Irish Ridge Road) then take a right onto Township Road 298. The road curves around to the left and should take you to the parking lot which should be marked. GPS Lat/Long coordinates for the trailhead is 39 deg 34' 22" / 82 deg 01' 58".

I'm bringing hamburgers potatos and beans for Saturday night Dinner I do need a pot too cook the beans in if someone could bring an extra that would be great. Also we have had a couple offer up prizes for some contest thank you for that, lets be thinking about some contest we can do. Please bring trash bags so we can clean up our erea when we are done. I'm bringing a case of water and first aid supplies so we should all be set.

I will be there on Friday after noon I will mark the main site with a red flag when you get there head down the trail to the right. If you don't see me in 30 minutes of hicking come back out and go to the left lol. If any of you need anything please call or text 937-207-5055

I can bring a good large metal/enamel pot with bale handle and lid that should work well for beans. I'm also planning to bring plenty of maple pork sausages for an easy breakfast; maybe also throw in some potatos, eggs, whatnot and make it a meal... and, of course, cowboy coffee.

I have yet to accomplish friction fire, so hopefully weather will be relatively dry and someone can help me learn this one...? Otherwise a few contest ideas I can suggest:
    - fastest fire using only ferro rod + striker
    - best small animal trap
    - best campfire story
    - best bushcrafted furniture: chair or table
    ...or anything else. Just brainstorming.

Hey y'all, I'll definitely be trying to make it out. I've camped there twice in the past two weeks. Were you thinking of camping before you go up the hill or after?

It seems like all the sites before you go up hill are fairly small now that all the brush has grown in. Fortunately there are no regulations against "stealth camping" and sites are fairly close to one another. I do know there's some bigger sites up the hill (counter clockwise) close to and along the cut off trail. I will take photos of the map this evening. (Not trying to highjack anything I just got back on Wednesday and figure I can help)

If its national forest, you can camp wherever you want, outside of possible specific local restrictionss.

I'm hoping to make it down there.

    WOAH!!!!!!!! This is awesome!

You might think, "Wait, why is this 18 year old kid from Texas so excited about a meetup in Ohio???" Well, the reason is that we are probably moving to Ohio this next Winter/Spring. Where I am, a few minutes south of Fort Worth, there is very little in the way of public land. Not the most luxurious woods in my immediate area, either. The one particular place we are heavily considering is less than a couple hours from Waynes National Forest. To live near such a piece of land would be simply awesome.

So this thread caught my eye. Sounds like there is some pretty cool dudes in that neck of the woods, too. Hopefully I will see some of y'all round the campfire in 2018! :dblthumb::dblthumb:

I'm thinking closer base camp for same reasons. I *should* be able to get to parking by 8pm on Friday, and can hike multiple trips to help haul stuff that night and/or Saturday. Depending on time, I'd like to hike around and explore the area on Saturday, but then still return to that base camp, etc...

I'm still hoping to take other "backpacking" trips later this summer; exup and anyone else are welcome to join whenever I figure out details - probably Red River Gorge though.

Question: is the water at Wildcat filterable? I've read several recommendations to pack in all water due to heavy metal contamination. I'm always skeptical about these claims without an official posted warning, especially when it's only a one-time consumption, but have no idea what the real contamination type or severity might be at Wildcat... -_^

Ok I juts called, due to the mining, there are heavy metals in the water so they say it it is not filterable. Also they warned if you see water and the water bed is a oranges color to avoid it because that is a sign of acid that has entered the water again from the mining. I am bringing a case of water with me Sounds like there is going to be at least 10 of us there, so bring what you can I will defiantly share my water.

by the way, now that it's moved to the 19th, I'm hoping to make it down (missed that it had cha get dates!) I'll run it by the wife and see if I can get free for Saturday and swing down for a bit, cause it's been way too long since I was out of the city!

As long as they don't post another mandatory Saturday at work, I'll be heading out after work Friday night. I won't be there till around 1:30 am so if y'all hear something raiding the coolers assume it's a huge bear and don't shoot ;)

I don't recall you being a "huge" bear at all. :) You still sporting the Fidel Castro look?
