I’m intrigued, but the photos I find of the product fresh from the can make me want to open a can of cat food instead.

Anyone try this and live? Did you use it for stock or soup? Brown it like a roasted chicken? Feed it to the dog? Secret Santa gift?

I think the canned chicken breast chunks from Coscto are fine but, not that useful or nutritious. Without the bones it would likely pack more caloric value per ounce.

I wonder if there is a good canned roast beef pot roast style.

Please someone chime in...I have two cans in the pantry that mock me every time I open the door. They have been in there for about 8 years but I can't get myself to throw them out.

Chicken and dumplings are all I can think of?? Maybe enchiladas?

Growing up I had a friend that LOVED to take those camping. He'd sit down, eat the whole thing outa the can, then drink the coagulated effluvium, smacking his lips.

I am with you, Spum. I'll take 9 Lives on a cracker, please!

One review says “it looks like it came out of an egg pod in Alien”, another called it “the best diet incentive ever”.

I may no longer be intrigued.

Okay, I nominate @fixits to take one for the team and open one of the cans (maybe even *shudder* taste it). Who seconds the motion?

Ok, so Lena has some friends over for cards and coffee one afternoon. They run a little late and Ole comes through the door. Ole bellers, "Lena, vat's for dinner?" Lena jumps up, opens a can of catfood, dumps it on a saucer, rings it with soda crackers and tells him dinner will be a little late, just go watch the news on the TV. Well, the ladies are aghast, "Oh, Lena...that's catfood! It's gonna kill him!" Lena brushes them off saying that Ole seems to like it.

Sure enough, three months later at the funeral that same old blue haired busybody confronts Lena saying, "Didn't I tell you that would kill him? Didn't I?" Lena laughs and says, "No, that didn't do it. He was on the back of the couch with his leg over his shoulder licking his butt when he tipped off and broke his neck!"

Not had the canned, nor would I trust it 8 years later.

I used to use the bagged kind for cheap trailfood... a package of Chicken flavored "Lipton Sides" with a package of the Sweet Sue meat was a good dinner. 7oz of meat in that package iirc... I think they made a smaller 3oz version too.

    I'm gonna do it.
Gotta wait for the wife to leave. Not like she would try and stop me..heck she would get me the can opener. I'm thinking the smell may be a tad off putting and she's not one to internalize her displeasure with me.

    You are my hero.

On the plus side, not sure it could look much worse after 8 years. You might want to check the pics here:

I've ate a bunch of 'em. Still here. What's more, I think it's pretty good.

    But I ain't real picky.

And mine weren't 8 years old!

Never had the whole chicken but I bet I ate my weight in Sweet Sue Chicken and Dumplings as a kid. I loved that stuff. Shortly after I got married I brought home a couple of cans for dinner and was told that I could do whatever I wanted but my wife wouldn’t be partaking lol.

Id use it in a variety of things.
Add some tomato. Onions peppers and mushrooms and you have a 10min cacciatore .

Mushrooms and some marsala you have chicken marsala

    Pho
    Stew
    Soup

Most of the gross gelatinous goo hate is ignorance . Thats broth. REAL broth .

Heat it up .It'll turn to a liquid .

As far as the shelf life. If it aint rusted. Dented or swollen . Its good. If it hisses like a soda. Thats bad.

All cans will make a sound as the pressures equalize . Just briefly though. Not elongated

I like them. I haven’t seen one in a long time though. It is just cooked chicken. Just like if you cooked it in a crock pot. Ready to become soup, chicken and dumplings, pot pie...

Back (30 years now) when I was Wilderness Ranger, this was a stocked item in our patrol cabins (might have been a different brand)- a whole chicken squeezed into a can. I ate a lot of them over the course of a couple of seasons :) Prepped them a lot of different ways, but most fondly remember making chicken tacos with them.

They are not pretty pulled out of the can, but actually eat pretty good.

At least it looks like they took the time to pluck and eviscerate it. That get's 'em up to at least a one star rating!!

I clicked the link @spumwuzzle provided.

You don't have to do this.

    Reconsider.

It looks like a blob of chicken grown inside KFC's underground labratory.

Count the legs before comsumption. There should be two. Three at the most.

For those of you considering going on a diet, may I recommend Kozy kat. You eat a can of that and it'll be three or four days fore you want to eat again, just saying!

Thank you for sacrificing yourself for us! To offset what you saw in the link I recommend looking at pictures of little puppies on google for at least a half hour. I hope that helps.

Here in Atlanta... well, south of here in Atlanta... there used to be a delicatessen, Happy Herman’s, that built their business on the “Three-Legged Chicken”... which was essentially a fried chicken in a box with an extra leg thrown in.

About 10-12 years ago I used to buy the Sweet Sue Chicken and Dumplings at the Family Dollar. Mix in a small can of canned peas, add plenty of fresh cracked pepper, and I was happy. I avoid it now, for whatever reason. Maybe I'll get a can again!

@fixits, don’t stand directly over the can when you open it.

If properly canned and processed it should be safe to eat. Nutrition, texture, and taste do degrade over time though.

If it isn't swollen, rusted, or compromised... Open it. If there are no off smells or signs of mold, just make sure it is thoroughly heated before eating. Because of the age, I'd suggest something like pulled chicken with a bbq sauce. Or the Enchiladas mentioned above. Something where the texture isn't as important.

Edit to add... Just make sure someone is filming the opening. Because we all really want to see a face chicken. :D
