Our own Matt Paul made me the blank, and included hardware with it, much to my surprise.
I was going to avoid mentioning his name, and I hope I'm not violating any sort of non-affiliation rule by doing so, but Matt Paul is hands down one of the best knife makers I know, and if you don't have some of his work I highly suggest you snag something of his.

For those of us relegated to living in "the south", anything above of the first welcome station is "the north".

That being said, to me Maine is Maine and New Brunswick is north! It's all relative and depends on where you're standing and where you going.

It's like asking for directions, and the person you're asking says "Wehll whea ah you cahming frahm?"

What does it matter I'm here with you now!? :D

The term, "you can't get there from here" does some time apply.

South, north... what does it mean? Borders, welcome stations?

I lived in North Dakota for a while. There was a sign on a place in Minot that said this:

"Best Margarita South of the Border"

Each piece must be tightened. The pieces need to grab tight to the tang or the handle will suck. No slack.

This is a good indication (both with leather and bark) that you're getting things tight enough - the first few layers will curl around the bolster with the tension on top of them.

There's a ton of surface friction in it. With stacked birch, you can even put the peened stack in the oven at 150deg or so for a few minutes, and tar will seep out of the bark and glue everything together.
Getting to this point took maybe an hour, even taking a bunch of pictures - it's taking a lot longer trying to shape the entire handle with nothing but that Benchmade. It's coming along, but I think I'll have to at least sand some to get rid of the edges right next to the bolster and buttplate; just can't get the angle I need.

    Thanks.
    I'm learning something here.

Do you epoxy the outside once it's shaped?
Or do I have to wait to find out? lol

You probably could, but I'm a hippie and I have a strong dislike of unnecessary chemicals. (And yes I'm aware that modern tanned leather is full of 'em.) I'll probably end up melting some wax into it and buffing it, but other than that, nothing.

Uh,....@youcantreadinthedark, those were some ah, different videos. I've never heard "JinJer" before. I would recommend a super soaker filled with holy water, I could arrange some if you could use it.......

Kidding aside, that would be some awsome forge music. ;) I like the way that stacked leather is coming. Looking forward to its completion.

I haven't fallen off the face of the earth, just been attending to other stuff. First of all, not to be outdone by @Youcantreadinthedark 's musical selection, I proffer this....

Today I fit the bolster and a micarta spacer to the tang...

    IMG_5283.JPG

    IMG_5285.JPG

I also squared up and split my slab of wood (Osage), and inlet it for the tang...

    IMG_5286.JPG

A knifelike form emerges when all the components are arranged together...

    IMG_5287.JPG

    IMG_5288.JPG

The project will gain momentum now.

The wood isn't stabilized, but I've had fairly good luck with Osage not moving around too much. It was given to me by my friend Stim Wilcox, who is a bowyer www.wilcoxbows.com

This evening's progress. First, our musical selection...

Starting to get some rough form to the handle, pin and lanyard holes drilled, and I got the bolster more or less shaped...

BTW, @Youcantreadinthedark , did you go out and buy a ball peen just for this project?
That hammer is cleaner than the ones they sell at the local Ace ;)
Not that there's anything wrong with that :)

Looking more closely, you'll note that he also has an older ball peen hammer and a rather menacing looking framing hammer, presumably for when the going gets heavy....

If a project doesn't involve at least three hammers, I'm not interested. ;) That framer has seen some horrors...

A few more passes to take the lumps out, some fine-tuning of the copper slopes, and it's off to @x39 for some pants. That was a whole lotta handwork.
