Wow! What a difference May makes! We've had flashes of Summer the past week, and yesterday we took advantage of it. Backpackgirl and I headed to our spot by the creek for a little mother-daughter adventure. We had planned to cook lunch, but ended up just playing at the park and exploring by the river. The sun was warm but the wind was chilly and the clouds and rain rolled in later in the afternoon. A typical Spring day around here.

We had thunderstorms on Friday night, so the creek was running fast on Saturday morning. The banks and surrounding forest are completely clear of snow and ice now. We didn't see so much as an ice cube anywhere this time.

    P5050358.JPG P5050368.JPG

We met the landowner and it turns out that this part of the trail is on private property. He was very kind, and said we could stay, but he was out playing with his kids and we didn't want to disturb them. So, we turned around and went to find another place to play. They have quiet a view!

    P5050398.JPG

This male Mallard seemed to enjoy the quiet parts of the river.

    P5050397.JPG

The fishermen we met on the trail told us that the salmon and trout are running now. We didn't see any but they said they caught four or five. I had my hobo fishing kit in my pack, but we skipped it today in favour of finding a spot to feed our hungry tummies. We wouldn't have any luck here today, but it was fun scouting.

    P5050389.JPG

When we visited here last week, the flowers and trees were just starting to emerge out of the ground. I think we only saw two or two of these dandelions. Yesterday, there were pops of yellow everywhere along the creek bank, and the trees are starting to bloom.

    P5050370.JPG

Thanks to all the rain, it was a little muddy in spots, but things have started to dry out. The snow and ice are gone and the ground is thawing. Yay!

    P5050399.JPG

Backpackgirl really wanted to catch a fish, and even tried to see if she could catch one by hand. We didn't see any, but we watched a video about trout tickling recently.... LOL! I think it's illegal here, but she had no chance, so I figured why not let have a go at it. Thanks for joining us!

ETA: Here's a little video as well, in case you're interested.

Mine for May. It seems more summer like than the picture shows. Not just warmer, green too. I guess the grass from last year makes makes for some prominent 0504181817_HDR.jpg brown tones.

As stated, I'm going to see this through for a year. May submission, though a day late due to forum technical problems yesterday. 6 hours 33 minutes gain in time since the winter solstice, by the end of next month we'll be headed the other way.

June 2018: The Adventure Kids Daycare has turned into the Sick Kids Daycare this week, but I snuck in a quick trip to my spot this morning after delivering backpackgirl back to school.

Today - June 01, 2018, a hot and steamy day.
    image.jpeg

It was an intense outing. I had Buddy and Sophie with me and we ran into some yotes. At times, we were as close as 15 yards from each other. The coyotes didn't appreciate our presence and were barking and yapping it up pretty good. In an effort to move the pup away from them, we got off course and ended up having to bushwhack through some pretty thick brambles and otherwise rough ground. I don't think I'd ever go that way again. We were in close proximity to each other for about a halfhour.

We finally worked our way out and back to the vehicle, the dogs really filthy. Spent several hours cleaning them up and combing the burrs out of Sophie's curly poodle hair.

I felt like I phoned in my June post, so Bella and I went back to our spot last week. Our plan was for her to play at the park while I made lunch, and after that, we'd hit the trail and explore the forest and the creek. Sadly & humorously, a lawn moving tractor started stalking us and we were forced to leave. On the upside, I finished my lunch, found a branch to make a bow out of, and had a great belly laugh. I felt a little bad about laughing at Bella, but it was good medicine. ;)

    P6060618.JPG

Lunch was grilled cheese on cast iron on my pack stove. I used Texas toast garlic bread. MMMMM! Bella had simple processed cheese, and mine had peameal bacon, medium cheddar and fresh tomato. It was one of the best things I've ever made.

    P6060660.JPG P6060668.JPG

I took some tips from the UL Bushcrafters group and left a few things at home this trip. My fixed blade and Bacho Laplander stayed home, for example, Bella used the tray from the cheese as her plate, and I used my SS pasta bowl for a pan lid and a plate. :)

    P6060670.JPG P6060648.JPG

I like to keep a saw and/or fixed blade in my day hike pack, but I rarely use them. I'm always on the hunt for fatwood, and am currently looking for stuff to make my own bow drill kit out of. Before the tractor arrived, I found a potential bow laying on the ground, so didn't need those blades again. I came to regret not having them the next day, but swapping them out for my cast iron skillet paid off this time.

    P6060678.JPG

We were both having a great time until that darned tractor arrived. BOO! :(

    P6060674.JPG

I teach the kiddos to stand their ground, get noisy, and get big if we're ever approached by a attacking animal. This time, though, we ran for our lives instead. I almost had to use my bow as a sword, but we made it. PHEW! LOL! Thanks for joining us and for all the posts above and below this one!
