So, my daughter asked me to take her fishing today. It was cold, rainy, windy, and dreary. I was sitting on the couch with my computer working on some job estimates, and she came into the living room and asked.

I had no fishing gear ready at all, but we scrounged some together and away we went. First stop, her first fishing license ever. Then getting hooked buying bait. Can't believe how expensive those night crawlers are!

    And, the lake:

    And the girl.

The water was cold. It was a bad day for fishing, but a great day to hang out with my girl.

We left and went on a hike instead.

Even in a place like this, trash intrudes. This could have been washed down in high water.

This Bud is for me. And it resides in my truck right now.

And here is yours truly. I guess she snuck a picture of me. And you can see the ever present forage pouch from @HannahT

Way better then working! You owe your daughter a big thanks snd a hug for getting you out of the house.

The info on that sign is priceless. What condition is the Tamarack stump in? Kind of related, as a surveyor, every once in awhile I come across a deed that calls out an old tree as a boundary marker. Half the time I end up locating a stump. Never had to present a gift while surveying, maybe some jerky to an agitated dog, but never tobacco or other supplies.

    Very cool!

Glad you got out. It looks like the bugs aren't out yet. Cool sign about the boundary. William Burt a very interesting person who was the Michigan state surveyor, invented the solar compass and the first typewriter, discovered the Marquette iron range, and never attended school past the sixth grade.

Thanks everyone. :) It was an excellent day. I'm actually sitting in the truck outside of a restaurant where my son took us all out for dinner tonight.

And for the first time I witnessed a "dine and dash"! Story below:

As you know, my wife does tattoos. There is another gal in town who used to be licensed as well, but was shut down because of sanitary concerns, but still does illegal work. She came into the restaurant with her daughter and son, and came in to sit near us. When she saw us sitting there, they immediately went to the opposite side of the place. They ordered and the food was delivered, and I saw them eating.... and then she brought something to the counter and went back to sit down. As soon as the waitresses were busy, they got up and left! The waitress came back and was speechless. This woman is well known in town and is the manager of the local Verizon store! And she runs out of the restaurant without paying? The waitress did call the police too, and they do have cameras in action.

So it was an exciting ending to the evening. :)

Yeah. We were pretty astonished at it. The waitresses knew her. :) I mean, she is the manager of the local Verizon store, which is in the same building as the main grocery store in town... Go figure. :) Pretty curious to see what comes of it. :)

As an addendum to this story, the trip report, not the dine and dash...

I mentioned that I needed to gather my fishing gear. Part of that gear was a little Plano brand tackle box, the micro-magnum model. I have had this little box for probably 30 years and have carried it countless miles of trout streams.

When we got out to the lake, I needed a hook and when I opened the box, the latch broke off. This kind of bummed me out because of the history of it. So, I put a rubber band around it and continued on my day. I figured I would scour eBay or Amazon for another small box.

Well, today I received the gif box from @backlasher . Guess what was in it? :)

Among other cool stuff. Pictured next to my old one with the broken latch.

I'll take a bad day of fishing over a good day at work any day ;)

Earth worms are cheap, at least at my local Walmart, better yet leave a log laying on concrete in the yard and flip it every so often for a free supply. Blood Worms on the other hand are pricey buggers, going rate is around $1 per worm.

Oh and thanks for cleaning up after the slob, leave it better than you found it :dblthumb:

This put a huge smile on my face, John. What a wonderful way to spend a day. I'm jealous if the time your daughter got to spend with her dad. I'm going to go call mine now. :)

That dine and dash is weird. Some people!

Nice impromptu outing @gohammergo ! You are right, dew worms are expensive now and days!

Back in 2001 I had the honor to design a small part of the new survey marker cap for "Milepost Zero" I made the eagle feather that was added to the top of the new marker cap that was set during a ceremony in conjunction with the U.S. Forest Service and the local Native American tribe when they re dedicated the monument and put those signs up. As a surprise to me, they gifted me a replica of the cap.

    100_2438.JPG

Did you find the corner and see the cap Gohammergo?

As an addendum to the "dine and dash" thing that happened, my wife picked up some pizzas from the restaurant last night. She was talking to the waitress about it. :)

So, what happened was, these people came in and ordered meals for each of them. Then ordered a cheeseburger, without the cheese!. The cook made them a cheeseburger, because, well cheeseburger, right? So they are their meal, and then complained about the cheese on the cheeseburger they had ordered. :) The waitress brought the burger back to the kitchen, and the cook made them a new cheeseless cheeseburger and brought it out. They complained about that, and said that the cook had just scraped off the cheese. When the waitress brought that one back to the kitchen, they got up and scurried out.

Cops investigated and the dash was caught on camera. The owners decided that rather than press charges, the peeps had the option to either pay for the meal or be banned from the place forever. They chose the ban. Unreal. Seems like it was a setup to get a free meal and then raise a fuss about something stupid so they wouldn't have to pay.
