Made a tool to make a tool to make another tool. Fashioned a wedge out of seasoned hardwood to split down a bow stave out of oak. Used my Bahco saw to cut a groove so the wedge could start splitting.

Felt like doing some embellishment to the sheath. Sharpie drawing on the fire hose material.

Not a poser shot. At least not totally. I had a buddy with a laser engraver burn this patch for me and I sewed it up on a blank hat. So Tracker related action.

There were quite a few variations of the tracker at Blade. My son said he must have shown his to a hundred people. 1AD2F368-AC3A-40AC-9B25-5DB39657563C.jpeg

NOTE; I had posted this earlier in self made gear but had a request to post it here for posterity................

    MAKING A CANE- TRACKER STYLE

I enjoy making hiking staffs and canes from wood I find on my daily adventures in the forest. A while back I found a really nice old dried out leg bone from some poor creature that obviously no longer needed it. While I was holding the bone I thought the end made an interesting handle so I packed it home for a future project. Yesterday was a blustery day so I went out to the shed and got to work. My first step was to cut off the "handle" end of the bone with a big butcher saw.

I reamed out the marrow tube just a bit until it was about 3/4" wide and about 2 1/2" deep. I then put some tape around my dried out wooden shaft at the 2 1/2" mark. This gave me a base line for fitting the bone and kept the wood from chipping at the edge.

I used my tracker to saw a shallow channel around the circumference of the shaft just above the tape line.

I took a 3/4" washer and traced a circle on the shafts end. It was then time to CAREFULLY baton the tracker to cut around my circle.

After getting it roughed out I slowly shaved away until I had a fairly nice round plug.

By repeatedly press fitting the bone I could clearly see what still needed to be shaved down.

Here it is at its final fitting. It will need to be epoxied into place tomorrow and then the edges sanded so they blend but for a first try I was pretty happy!

Make sure that there is plenty of "proud " wood all the way around. That assures that your bone and wood will have epoxy right to the edge of the seam. Then you can file or sand the wood down for a perfect fit.

I twisted up a bike inner tube to see if it could be used as a gluing clamp to hold it tight. Success! :)

    The tools of the trade..........

I got it epoxied in place last night. Worked a little with a wood rasp and sandpaper this morning. So far so good....

OK, here it is. One coat of minwax Puritan Pine to give it a little color. I will wait a few days before deciding on a second coat. It was a fun weekend project.

P.S. This was just a quick proof of concept project that came out better than I thought it would. Now I can hardly wait to get old and start using it! :)

I found myself in possession of a @Tomjones tracker earlier this week.
Finally made it to the woods with it this morning. I found a sorta good tree for a throwing stick.
I roughed out my thumper, it's green so I'll leave it sit to dry and finish it next time I pass through this area.
I hate working with Ash, and an Ash burl elbow thing has done nothing to increase my Ash love.
On the other hand I am rather fond of the Tom Jones.

An old sheath I made sorta kinda fits the tracker. And my utility knife pouch lazy skookum/Sargent pinched to hold a paring knife.
    94FE9AE8-FE7A-4CA9-8EFA-3EC2D0B0F31B.jpeg

I'll try the Tracker teamed up with my McCullen paring knife for a while. Should cover pretty much everything.
    38020F41-84BE-4A59-9696-7838397E884E.jpeg

Stringy miserable Ash, roughed out and ready to sit and dry for awhile to be finished later, (or discarded in favor of a better stick, we'll see...)

Super duper covert onion chopping for the chili cook off today at church. Haven’t heard the winner yet but there’s a chance. Happy Father’s Day.

So I took my boys camping. Sorry I dont take pics I'm to brainwashed. But my oldest was getting aftsr it with my beck wsk. He said dad whats the best knife ever made for war. I laughed and said a hollow ground gen1 dave beck tracker. He replied with its not as cool as rambo's first knife. So this just got way more expensive to prove my point.

I'm glad to see we don't have safe queens. The jungle tarnished mine pretty good. I'm not sure if its rust or really good tarnish on the curved part of the spine. And my sheath has taken a beating. I think @Mr.Black black has us both beat though maybe he will post pics of how a used tracker looks along with @JollyRoger3 . he has my dream tracker

One of the days when I get some extra money put aside I am going to have to get a tracker type knife just to see what the hubub is all about! I like the way the Dave Wenger one looks.

May I suggest that you follow the path of the few and the proud before you and snag one of the ones made by our very own @Caleb Cox . It takes a lot of the sting out of the sticker shock . Not by any means to insinuate that your getting a lesser tool just one heck of a price to quality ratio . I haven't had mine long at all , honestly haven't been to the field yet but it's been wooped on around the place daily in some form of another daily since I received it . For the price of TB Tracker I can buy 3-5 of Caleb's depending on the level of fit and finish .
By that I mean to say that my purchases were/are both rough finished ( Scale intentionally left on ) which I personally like the looks of . But he also makes more artisan pieces if that's your thing .

Well it's going to be a long while anyways. I get a small(682.00 monthly) check from the VA and that's it. I am still fighting with the VA on my disability. I'll get there someday I hope and be able to take care of my wife and I better. I'd like to see some pictures of Caleb's knives though if you have any? Thanks and have a great day! :)

I will be doing a live video discussion later this week on my Instagram page if anyone wants to join in.

I know not everyone has an IG page so I’ll see if I can save the video and put it up on my YouTube channel as well. So folks who are unable to jump in can view the discussion.

I have been receiving a lot of questions again from a few different folks both here on BCUSA and there on Instagram.

    2AB1FA8D-451A-4238-844A-F7BB49718856.jpeg

    Quoted from my IG page:

If anyone is interested in doing another discussion on the WSK-WST Tracker Knife design let me know. If there is enough interest I’ll set up a date and time. I have been receiving a lot of DM’s and Pm’s about the design and different variations I have utilized. I’m no professional, just some guy who likes and uses the design. I am fortunate to have a few I can display and help give a visual comparison with. I won’t go over it’s history. Just my experience and opinions.

Thanks for sharing and thanks for stopping by my page.

I wasn’t able to attend the Between the Rivers Gathering or the Global Bushcraft Symposium due to some family obligations.

I hope everyone who attended these great events enjoyed their learning experience. I hope to catch the next ones.

    Thanks,

    Jarrod

Getting a feel for controlling the Tracker , kinda . At least they're all still on the stick this time . Just hanging at the park with the family and brought my sustainment pouch along .

For those of you that don’t have an Instagram account and were pondering what @Mr.Black WSK ‘s have been aging like.

He’s been playing with Mr. Lutyens and others up at the GBS and a few other projects.

    BF19EDD4-3E8F-4A68-8009-E9B78C82B017.jpeg

He also has a new toy he’s been playing with...

@Simplejack the WSK @JollyRoger3 has moved on to another.

    Thanks,

Two hours and thirty three minutes of sleep last night...

So I decided to just get up and get the day going. A little bit of reading, grabbed a sharp tool and some coffee and hit a few of the raccoons trails to practice tracking animals. Pulled out this old unit hoodie to keep the mosquitoes at bay. Took a minute for a cool picture.

A book and a some water while I waited for the coffee to finish...

    The neat looking poser picture...

I’ve been doing yard work and some landscaping projects today... had to hit to store for something. On the way to the store I couldn’t figure out why the rental truck seat felt odd. I figured it out on the way home.

    Coffee, Flowers, Gardening, Knife...

Getting stuff done, but action packed pictures and write ups not happening as of late.

I have been putting the camera phone down and just digging in.

A picture of the calm before the storm if you will.

You know how cool your wife is when she needs to open her new vacuum box and she needs a box-opener so she grabs a tracker!
