I did a shore line clean up on lake taneycomo yesterday.
The only thing that you can count on in this world is that humans will leave trash any where and every where they go........

I do two shore line clean ups a year.
And five separate Missouri stream team clean ups every year. It's sad and depressing ! I've picked up countless tons of trash over the last 30 years. But it doesn't even make a dent in the problem.
There is always more trash !

Just getting started. image.jpg It sure doesn't take long to fill up a boat.
I ended up with 5 (yes count them) 5 tires a giant orange traffic cone. Bait buckets , worm boxes. Assorted crap broken glass and of course beer cans ! And a 4'x8'x2' foot peace of styrofoam. image.jpg On the plus side they give you a tee shirt and feed you lunch. image.jpg I don't think people will ever see that we only have ONE planet !

    Sorry for the rant everyone.

    Bob...

I see it along the train tracks, people throw trash, tires, appliances, etcalong the right of way. People are filthy animals.

Good on you for doing some good!

I've also cleaned up a ton of trash also over the years. Makes me furious. I once read about a group of hunters that had recycled so many cans they'd found over a number of years that they managed to purchase land to care for and duck hunt on. Really inspired me to think that if nothing else, good came from bad.

We did that on earthday, had about 20 kayaks and lots of meah bags. There are so many bottles it floats the bags and you lash them together and float them back to where we put in. Multiple trips and no dent in amount. Its pretty sad that you cant even pick it all up in every area, you just have to focus on the bulk of it and stuff you can actually haul.
Some of it probably wasn't something someone threw out the window, but a coke bottle on a picnic table and wind came up, or an empty cooler in the back of a truck. Careless crap, and a lot of intentional trash as well.

I was taught better. I still remember as a teen throwing out a bag of trash and the sick feeling in my stomach afterwards.

In Kansas we had a “Give a Hoot, Don’t Pollute” campaign for a few years. Kids were taught that it was a sin to trash the land and it worked! Now, decades later we’re seeing more and more trash on the sides of the road and in camping areas. I think it’s time to get back to those campaigns. Little kids have a way of shaming parents into doing what’s right.

Don't get me started! Sometimes I really hate people. Well... Not people. Just disrespectful and selfish people. Every time we go on a hike, or are even camp in a campground, we take a couple of trash bags or a large stuff sack with us. We pick up the random trash we see lying around the campground or on the trail. I have even yelled at people on the trail for tossing trash into the bush. Oh, it infuriates me!

And yes, we get some strange looks from other hikers sometimes when carrying a bag full of trash on the trail. I wouldn't let some squirrel store acorns in my house, or a predator store a carcass in my house. I'm sure the animals appreciate the same from us. If you visit their habitat, keep it clean. I often think of the future and what we are leaving for future generations. I picture in my mind some archaeologist a thousand years from now, uncovering a "cache of trash" and expressing his disgust at how folks lived in our century.

That's messed up, It's seems no matter how far you go or deep you get into woods you find trash. Most people have zero respect for the natural world. Good on you, for trying to clean it up.

Thanks for sharing the images. The sponsors are to be commended as well, boxss of printed T-shirts and chow for a big crew isn't cheap...

We have the same issues here - perhaps larger

There are people who would take a dump on the northern star if they could get their butts high enough.

Thanks, anyone who does this kind of clean up.

It's a neverending problem here as well, whether along the roads or miles back into wilderness areas.

Just takes a few folks to really mess up an area, but as this post shows, it takes just a few to make a lot of improvement as well!

Inspiring. I have to do some volunteering.
One time on the Buffalo I fished out a can of spam and a high end alcoholic beverage, both unopened

Good on you (and everyone else) for trying to "stem the tide" of trash.
I was taught as a child to take care of the land as best I could. Leaving trash for others to pick up is horrible...

One rule I always had ingrained in me growing up was "always leave a campsite cleaner than you found it". I used to hate having to make those runs back and forth patrolling the site picking up old cigarette butts, etc before leaving.

But now as I introduce my kids to camping, I teach them, and stubbornly enforce, the same rule...

Thank you! To everyone out there who takes the time to pick up after all of the ingrates out there.

But we really shouldn't be surprised at their behavior- For decades our society has taught them to not take responsibility for their actions, that there is NO such thing as sin or moral absolutes. What the heck do expect them to do?

Long time reader, first time poster.
Maybe not a way to introduce myself over here, but reminded me of a time when was crossing the river Sava in Belgrade, Serbia in a small boat. I was holding one hand in a water and suddenly felt some object. It was a whole dead horse, and my hand was inside it's open stomach. Pretty gross stuff and a terrible way to dispose a dead animal.
