As much of a space geek as I am people are surprised to find that I really have little, if any, interest in astronomy. But for those interested in such things Wednesday will be a triple crown for moon watching. The moon will be a blue moon (name for the second full moon in any month), a super moon (a full moon that occurs when the moon is in it’s closest approach to Earth), and thirdly a total lunar eclipse will occur. Should be a fun night for people—maybe not so good for werewolves :D

Thanks for letting us know! I'll mark it in my calendar. It'll be a windy day here Monday so hopefully there won't be any major cloud cover.

I don't think I have any silver bullets in my preps. Where's Michael J. Fox when you need him?

I've got my annual winter full moon walk for TNC scheduled for Wednesday night. It should be great except for the fact that we've got cloud cover rolling in late in the afternoon and we won't be able to see a darn thing. The full eclipse wont be in effect here in the east until right around sunrise. If the clouds bother to part lo g enough.

It never fails, we always get rain, snow or clouds when cool celestial things occur.

The current forecast here calls for a 50% chance of rain, so I guess we'll see ...

Your luck runs the same as mine in that regard. Some years back there was an epic meteor shower which was to occur at 0400 one morning. I got up in plenty of time, and walked outside just in time to see one faintly obscured meteor as the clouds rolled in.

Check out: www.earthsky.org for information on eclipse times.

For people in the Eastern Time Zone the moon sets before the start of the total eclipse. :17:

I got to see the beginning of it, maybe 1/4 of the moon was getting dark grey.... then the moon set behind the trees and it was gone. :15:

I lucked out and had a good view. It had been overcast much of the night but cleared about an hour prior.

We went to Bear Island, NC to shoot the moon ... the coast goes east to west there.

    IMG_0809.jpg

I just really wanted to play and do a little installation with seashells, I usually wait till the tide comes in to watch the piece wash away.

    IMG_0869.jpg So I waited....

    ..... and waited
    IMG_0857.jpg

The tide never came in all the way. High tide was over 20 feet below the morning tide line that night.

So my sea shell spiral didn't get washed away till dawn.

Not really sure what happened. You'd think if the moon was closer it would have a stronger pull on the tides and make it be higher.

Another interesting bushcrafty thing to note is that the moon comes up an hour later each night

You can see the morning high tide on the chart was 5.65 feet, and the night time high tide was much lower at 4.2 feet, but that translated to 20 feet of beach. you can also see that the tide becomes more balanced when the moon and the sun aren't so opposed. Anyone know more about it?

Other than a big moon the day before I got nothing locally but clouds. February has no full moon in it, I wonder if there is a special name for that kind of month?

From what I've read on the internet there is no special name for a "NO-MOON" month.

They do occur about once every 19 years. The last time February didn't have a full moon was 1999 and again in 1980.

It seems to change based on your geographical location and the phase of the moon. I'm getting closer to 40 minutes at my locale.
