I recently purchased a surplus USGI 5qt bladder. It's been boxed since 1992. I've read some places that you shouldn't use them due to the plastic degrading. I ran a mix of baking soda and bleach through it. It removed the smell from the bladder, but is it safe to use for potable water?
I've used a Chinese knock off for years and haven't seem to have experienced any ill effects.

I would think that if it still holds water and doesnt stink then it should be okay. I have bought some old vietnam era army canteens and some mid 80's bladders and still use them. When the bag smells and the water tastes funny you'll know its time to throw them out. Just my 2 cents.
