Here is a neat little collapsible shovel marketed to campers that dates around 1916 made by the Ideal Mfg. Co.

The mark reads “Ideal Auto Shovel Ideal Mfg Co North Kansas City Mo. Patent Allowed. All my searches only revealed the Tourist Shovel name so I am not certain if this particular example may perhaps be an earlier one or if they were all marked Auto Shovel. I was not able to find the patent information.

It appears to have been inspired by the M1910 T handle shovel and is about the same size.

It fits nicely into the leather case I made for the M1910:

Some advertising from 1916-1918. Most all the advertising I could find dates in this range.

That is neat as can be. How positive does the telescoping handle lock?

Very securely. There is a little bit of play/wiggle between the sections but no worry of it collapsing without turning the rings. One turn of each ring locks it in either the open or closed position.

That is sweet...I have a vietnam era E-tool that my family use to give me crap about in camp...Until they saw the usefulness of such.
