Interesting to see how fast a civilized place can go from peace and quite to an all out mess. I always watch events like this with an eye towards seeing what happens and how the officials react to restore order. These snapshots of horror help fine tune my plans.

Saw a picture of a young lady video recording a riot from behind about 1/8 inch glass in a burger king. She wore Laughter and a smile upon her face. People are incoherently ignorant of just how close they are to danger.

I, like you just watch and learn. Being halfway between NYC and Boston, I can anticipate and appreciate just how precarious my family's safety is.

I see a crowd (any crowd) I hightail it in the other direction. Kind of limits my social life....

The Psychology of Mob Mentality and Violence

One dog may bark at you but it’s more likely that a pack will attack you.

We are not exempt from that behavior because we are human and not canine. As evidenced by dogs operating in a pack environment, human society is based on group dynamics.

As humans, we have instinctual responses that are exacerbated by group influences.

What we might not do as individuals we may do as part of a group. People may lose control of their usual inhibitions, as their mentality becomes that of the group.

You have never heard of a peaceful riot. Riots are by definition violent in nature.

All a riot is, is violent group behavior. The larger the group the greater the amplification of that group behavior. If the group behavior is peaceful, exemplified by Martin Luther King and Ghandi, the group behavior is peaceful and orderly.

If the group behavior is violent, the larger the group the more magnified the violence.

A mob mentality phenomenon has occurred throughout human history, whether witch burning, religious zealotry, political protests or reaction to perceived racial micro aggressions.

Three psychological theories address crowd behavior.

First is Contagion Theory, proposes that crowds exert a hypnotic influence on their members that results in irrational and emotionally charged behavior often referred to as crowd frenzy.

Second is Convergence Theory that argues the behavior of a crowd is not an emergent property of the crowd but is a result of like-minded individuals coming together. If it becomes violent is not because the crowd encouraged violence yet rather people wanted it to be violent and came together in a crowd.

Third is Emergent-Norm Theory that combines the two above arguing that a combination of liked-minded individuals, anonymity and shared emotions leads to crowd behavior

Good as far as it goes. What is the impudence for the fans of a team that just WON the Super Bowl to burn a few cars and smashing in store fronts, loot, rape and pillage their own city?

I don’t care what starts a riot— because I have no control of that--other than staying away from events that are likely to cause one. I do care how they evolve and what is done to control them because that knowledge might keep me alive.

I just read that they are considering bringing in the military to control the Paris events. I wonder if they have a home or national guard or if their Constitution allows military intervention on it’s own citizens?

France has been yielding to muslim influence more and more even before the 9/11 event . No surprise they are falling apart.
Tolerance with an inherently destructive influence does not make for peace. and these are intolerant of any one else's government.

Can't say I'd be behaving much differently if the government gave a huge tax cut to the wealthy and then drove the price of gas through the roof promising it was to fund green tech only to find out that 4/5 of the money was just going to go straight to the general fund. I've been watching this one with great curiosity.

I’ve got a lot of friends in France, and a few of them live in Paris. With the exception of one or two of them, most not only support the protests, they’d like to be more a part of it. They tell me they have a right to protest. It’s their country, their streets, and their everything, bought and paid for with their taxes,,, if they want, they’ll burn the lot of it to the ground...

It isn’t just the gas tax, it’s all the reforms the people earned through the riots in 1968 that Macron is now reversing, or weakening,,, the gas tax was the straw that broke the proverbial camel’s back...

Something posted to Facebook by a friend of mine,,,

This bit says it all really,,,

“Since when are revolts made only with words. There is a time when words are vain,,,”

Oh, good grief. Now we have to send our kids (the Army) to save them AGAIN? Maybe Germany should do that this time. :D

Oh, wait, they tried that before didn’t they. :14:

France should be a beacon to the rest of us , they fight hard for their rights . Many people laugh at the french and say they are a bunch of push over`s but they are fiercely protective over some things and wont let a government that ignores the people go unchecked . Governments need to be reminded that they work for the people not the other way around !

    Another thing to consider here.
We all need to learn to be more proactive and less reactive.

The main stream media has become less about news,
and more about dispensing "Shock & Awe"

With people becoming programmed to be reactive. They dole out little tid-bits of seemingly dramatic information. That when taken in aggregate, mean very little. Other than giving advertizers more opportunities to get their product in front of you each time you click.

I call it, "Crisis of the Week"
Every week a new one rears its ugly head.
These days, when I see a news headline glaringly obvious and loud right in front of me. I always turn around to see what is being sneaked by behind me.

    For examples;
Last week it was the Russians seizing the Ukraine Naval vessels. Oh My!

    The G20 Summit. Wow.

Alaskan Earthquake with major damage. Very Bad.

North Korea. This one pops up whenever there is a calm News day. WW3.

Saudi Prince makes Mince Meat out of Journalist. While neglecting to disclose. Said Journalist went to school with and was pals with Osama Bin Laden!

Paris is certainly a hot spot. But stop, think, do some research, and take a deep breath before you lock yourself in the bunker.

What this lightning fast dispensing of world wide news reminds me of. Is those schools of small fish we used to see on Jacques Cousteau specials in the '70s.

Something triggers the first fish. So he or she makes an 90 degree left turn. And the entire school following the leader makes a 90 degree left turn. With the ones in the back having no clue why, other than the one in front of me did. So I did it too.

Our modern media has eroded critical thinking as much as they possibly can. Our brave new digital world hasn't helped.

Everything has to occur in three sentence bursts. Or most people lose interest.

    Food for thought,
    LV

Weird for me. I was in Paris in 98 .When they won the world cup . Riots broke out and were contained .

Don't know what the police were called .Had different types . These were called
The Black Police. They wore all black .

I had a few witnessed accounts of them outside of that . they didnt mess around .

    Suprising how times change .

Wether their riots are good and bad I do not know . Not my monkeys .Not my circus .

But I do know riots are something I want no part of .

It has been and is becoming much more than "just" a demonstration against taxes and it is spreading across Europe.
Not just Paris, but all over France, Belgium, the Netherlands and even Germany "yellow vest"protests are erupting.

All I can think of when watching these more frequent Paris riots is Madam Defarge and hundreds of others like her quietly sitting in the background knitting down the name of those later to be disposed of which is probably very similar to the thousands of grass root Americans sitting at home watching the sensationalized riots here in the U.S. on TV and doing the same thing writing down names on a piece of paper.

I always considered the French Revolution to be a portent of the 20th century. The epitome of the destruction and death inherent in socialist atheistic nihilism. I hope the French can resolve this situation positively going forward.

this is the first i'm hearing about ANY of this. all i see on any of the major US news channels is Bush's dog, North Korea, Space X, Mueller. I even went to the world news section on cnn/msnbc/fox and havent found a single article about this.

edit: just found a 'yellow vest protest' about the tax hike in France.

A prime example of what happens with open borders that make a country no more then another third world nation, where the country gives all their recorses to the non legals, and trying to ballance things out by increasing the burdens of the citizens,

It seems this is about far more than simply taxes and immigrants,,,

“The social crisis that is expressed through the movement of yellow vests can not hide the climate crisis. These are two sides of the same coin: those of a profit-driven system that concentrates wealth at the top and destroys ecosystems. We have a duty to sound the alarm against a government that has a policy in favor of the rich and lobbies, " President of Friends of the Earh

I don't think it's just a problem in France, but the world over where those in the middle feel like they're being squeezed a little too tight. France is the latest news, but I suspect there will be more of this sort of thing in the future. I won't deny for a moment that the planet needs saving, but the "do as I say, not as I do" attitudes of the elite ruffle many feathers.

That said, there's troublemakers in every crowd - keep your eyes open and know your exits.

Many trouble makers are “planted” to discredit protesters and give the media something to focus on other than the real issues, but there are a few knuckleheads every crowd who either join the planted troublemakers, or initiate violence themselves.

I read one article where a group of French policemen where discussing going on strike during the protests planned for this Saturday coming. The logic was that either the police must side with the 99%, among whom they number, or continue to protect the interests of the 1%.

Are we in the US really that far away from this type of unrest, or worse?

The last time this nation was this divided, and perhaps not even this divided, was the 1850s.

Profiteers and provocateurs in both camps continue to push their agendas seemingly oblivious of history and human nature. Eventually the piper gets paid.

Lip service is lent to liberty without meaningful action or respect for the individual, the crossroads of intersectionality group think and the rights of the individual will be the modern Ft. Sumter.

Mix 1 part collapsed economy with extreme entitlement, add copious amounts of identity politics, squeeze in some increased taxes, stir in attacks on the 1st and 2nd amendments, bake through the summer leading up to the 2020 presidential election. Should be about ready come January 20th of 2021.

    Three years.

Interesting thread. Just read in one the European newsfeeds this morning that France is deploying 89,000 police to deal with the current situation. Very little mind being paid to this in the American media.

Just give the media a day or two until the flag is back at full mast and the Don of D.C. is back from Mar Largo.

no, it is just around the corner, the media has been programming the people that riots are how you change things.
the million woman march on washinton, because the president is precieved as sexist. (I know it wasnt a riot, but it was a protest for no reason)
antifa stirring up trouble for no reason

I am being quiet, buying ammo, paying things off, getting my BOB ready. We are not far behind this.

Some excellent responses here, thank you. Folks willing to look past the sensationalism and manipulation to actually use old school critical thinking is a serious breath of fresh air. French citizens po'd over a bait and switch tax scam, and throwing ACD concerns out the window? Imagine that! Good thing that could never happen here. Surely all is for the best in this the best of all homelands

One of the best things about this site aside from bushcraft (maybe because of it?) is the number of well informed and engaged folks. Gotta love that even when disagreements pop up.

I suspect because of our "preparations and survival skills", we as a group (even tough not allowed to discuss politics and such) also keep up with political and other outside influences that may affect our survival.

Why worry about paying things off if that's the case? I can see the moral side of it but some polices are downright bruta. Not to mention unethical.

Very interesting to see where this goes... it makes you think about a lot of subjects.

Geo Politics, E&E, Preparation, lack of education and understanding, experiences, corruption of the media and medical community.

It makes one rethink a few priorities and plans.

I fear the French are unwittingly pushing the government there to CRUSH the French people with military force. According to the media, it would be justified, no? Communism's next step....
