    I caught a whole whack of those with a black forehead and light body Wednesday at the Natchaug river, @Primordial. They weren't hubcaps like that one but they were plentiful;

    IMG_8852.JPG

    I wish I had taken more pictures of the ones that looked like that! This one is a little darker.

    Pumpkin seeds have a red flange on their "ear", the ears on these are all black. Hence is why I don't know what they really are.

    Mixed catch from the same day...

    100_1272.JPG

    4 rock bass, 6 of those pumpkin seed hybrid things and one bluegill. All caught on silver or gold micro jigs with tiny twister tails and some split tail grubs.

    100_1264.JPG

    100_1275.JPG

    You can see that the bottom rockbass was chomped on by either a pike or musky, both of which also inhabit this lake.

    The one from the pic looks like it had a touch of red. But those sunnies do tend to hybridize and generally confuse the heck out of folks like me

    A mix of bluegill, red ears, and smallish bass. I will try to post a trip report soon.

    They are one of my favorites. They look like they don't belong in my area. They look like they should live in the tropics!

    That what many people around here call them too,,, but a warmouth has brown lines radiating from around the eyes like a smallmouth bass and doesn't have any of the blue/green on the face or body. That is a 100% green sunfish.

    14" brown on Tenkara today, the Bad Axe from @Hunt4lyf;

    IMG_8989.JPG

    I whooped like a heathen when he smacked it! The splash was different from the largemouth blowups and there was dancing in the air! I saw those leopard spots and I darn near giggled at the size.

    IMG_8993.JPG

    Released healthy with good vigor, I'll see him later.
    Best Tenkara catch yet.

    18" largemouth on a Shakespeare while teaching my guest how to rig and fish a whacky worm;

    IMG_8986.JPG

    Two casts to show the corkscrew and the flip. Big hit off of the flip.

    This little guy went 2' sideways abruptly after he was hooked for a moment, looked like this when I got him out;

    IMG_8970.JPG

    What do you think smashed him?

    A fair share of small largemouth;

    IMG_8984.JPG

    Caught a ton of Pittsburgh Brookies;

    IMG_8974.JPG

    A metric buttload of sunfish;

    A good day not working. :D

    I say if you got trout in those waters that's what took nip out of him. Probably a good brown.

    Nice fish! That was quite the variety you caught there!...and congrats on the brown! Where there is one, there will be more.

    Zooming in and looking at that bite pattern it makes sense. I was thinking snapping turtle but they aren't known to be light biters. Also, with the water level so low I don't doubt competition = lunch to a fiesty wild trout. Growing up on the streams'll do that to yah.

    Large browns are meat eaters and cannibals. The next time you go there take a Rapala in a size much larger than you'd think you should fish and see what happens. I've had 15" trout burp out 5"-6" sculpins and chubs upon landing them.

    This time of year the water on this "river" averages less than a foot deep with the runs and undercuts well littered with sticks and such.

    I'll bring the spincast and a few spinners when the water is back up. I was wading in eight or nine inches of water today and there were bits of detritus in the trees at waist height and higher that were deposited by flowing water.

    Its hard to tell. It could be another fish, an osprey, mink or another predator. It looks like you had a great day!

    That reminds me of a lake I used to fish in Colorado. It had a good population of pike and many of the trout I caught had scars from them. My take was that the pike would hit the trout to stun it. When it opened its jaws to reposition the fish to eat it head first, a fish that was not stunned could escape. This is one of several trout I caught with the U-shaped pike wound. The tooth marks are more evident on the right than on the left.

    100_2203.jpg

    A guy that used to own a local fly shop had a beautiful fiberglass mount of a huge northern pike he caught in Canada. It was in a display that included a picture of him holding the actual fish and a shadowbox containing the fly (large streamer) he caught it on. I was shooting the breeze with him one day, admiring the mount, when he began talking about what a great job they had done capturing every detail of the fish. They captured every spot the real fish had.

    He mentioned noticing a U-shaped discoloration on the mount years ago but when he looked at the picture of the fish, sure enough it had the same mark. As soon as I looked at it I knew it was the same mark on the cutthroat above. I told him about the trout I had caught with that mark and later brought him a copy of the picture shown above. He agreed that's what it was. His monster pike had escaped from the jaws of another northern in its youth. Luckily it escaped to become the monster that it was. Later it was caught by another predator only to be released again but immortalized in fiberglass and photo.

    I fished a new spot that could be called a large pond or small lake this afternoon and expected panfish, perch, and bass so I rigged up with the classic combo of worm and bobber. Much to my surprise, this large pond/small lake was loaded with trout and what I guess to be juvenile salmon. I suspect that they are entering from the nearby river, but am not sure.

    It's Veevus "Fluorescent Yellow/Chartreuse" in 8/0.
    The pattern is my own version of a Kebari, I've been getting good results tying on a grizzly hackle, then binding down the rear of it leaving tufts and seating a pheasant hackle around the forward.
