three of my grandchildren and i caught hardhead catfish, sail cats and croakers this past weekend off a private pier in bon secour bay (gulf shores, alabama). the fish were small, the kids were happy. 2-year-old cranked in his first fish ... :)

That's awesome. I've eaten gafftop before ( I thinks that's the same as a sail cat), and it wasn't bad at all. Nothing better than teaching kids how to fish!

They are native to the Guadalupe River drainage, but they can be locally abundant. There was a scare a few years back that they would be outcompeted and or hybridize with introduced Smallmouth.

TPWD basically raised a ton of genetically "pure" Guadalupe Bass in fish hatcheries and released them into the rivers, Smallmouth couldn't keep up in Central Texas.

Good sized smallmouth bass. Caught on my tried and true Texas rigged worm.

Had just hit the water moving between campsites across a couple ponds and caught this rascal right after the portage. Swallowed the hook and bleeding heavily. Wasn't ready to keep one but didn't want to toss it back just to have it die. So we found a quick site, got a small fire going and had fried bass for brunch. Delicious.

Think so? Could be, or could be the light in the pic, not sure. But it's pretty typical for the ones we usually catch in that area (Adirondacks, Long Pond specifically).

The jaw and color make me think Largemouth, but I've never been to your neck of the woods. I could be way off.

Either way, great fish and awesome meal!

The first time ever fishing for Largemouth Bass was at the Ruby Lakes National Wildlife Refuge southeast of Elko, Nevada.

I was using a new Cabela's reel with a chartruse crankbait. I cast out to the edge of some cattails, looked down and had the world's biggest birds nest on my reel. It took me about 45 minutes to get everything restored. When I tried pulling in my crankbait, it naturally was snagged on something. I gave it a big tug and it took off across the water.

When I finally reeled it in, I had a five pound Largemouth! The first one ever for me. I was as hooked as the Bass!

After bass fishing in the cattails and reeds all summer, my favorite lure was a 1/4 oz Hula Popper.

Sorry, no pics. I never thought I'd catch anything.

Any time i am fishing new water I go with my black spinner bait and fish the deep water edge of the weed line. From there I will try the inside line and will go from there with lure selection. I like Spinner Baits as it is good for may species in light or thick cover. Here are a few all caught with the black spinner. kayak northern.jpg Cell 341.jpg Cell 111.jpg Cell 108.jpg

When I go to my folks place on Lake Osakis that is typically the fish I target and plan on learning how to live bait troll for them with the kayak. Nothing is better than walleye fresh from the lake!

Sadly I didn't have my camera or phone, but my 2.5 year old son caught a tiny perch. We were using a hand line with some power bait corn. He was super excited and loved touching "fishy." The funny thing - I'd been fishing for an hour unsuccessfully, he shows up and in 5 minutes catches something. Kid takes after his mother!
