Parcel hook from back when packages were tied with string. Made it easy to carry them.

I've seen tubers using the hook to cinch up bank line when lashing stuff together.
And if you've ever done that with your bare hands, you'll see why ;)

On the victorinox web site they have videos for each of the tools on the Saks and what they are for along with alternate uses.one thing they showed was somebody using the parcel hook to lift a bike chain back onto the sprocket so you don't pinch your fingers I reckon.

I use it for pot bales on and off the fire. It’s my favorite tool.

I thought too it went back to when packages were cross tied w string and like the old time ice-block-tongs, one would hook the string to carry

The Multipurpose hook did not appear on SAKs until 1991. The only "parcels" I've ever seen tied with string were cake/bakery boxes...maybe it was still a thing in Europe at that time.

A frequent travller can also use it to guide a stuck zipper on a suitcase. Laugh if you will but if you ever had to deal with a recalcitrant zipper ......

I remember cutting up brown paper grocery bags, wrapping a box with the paper and finishing it off with a string.

You know, I have lived well over half a century without a hook on any of my knives. Not once did I ever say “Gee, I wish my knife had a hook in place of a blade”. There are only so many things you can fashion into a semi-functional shape and mount it on a knife. A hook is not one of them and no, I have never used the hook on my SAK for anything. I would gladly trade it for a Wenger awl.

Just had the 'hook' on my SAK Compact replaced with the Awl that they SHOULD put on the knife stock. (I find the hook the most useless of SAK tools.)
    awlIn.jpg

Other than swapping the red scales for black ones and replacing the toothpick with a firefly ferro rod, that's the only modification this Compact will get and it will be just about the PERFECT small suburban EDC knife. :)

I've used every tool on every sak I've had. If it had a hook on it, then I would have used it.

I'm an 80's kid, and I remember all of Mom's audiobooks from the library of Congress came in the mail being wrapped and tied off with string. Most if any packages we got were wrapped in brown paper and tied. All meats were wrapped and tied before freezing.

I used the hook a few days ago to help pull some cordage taut a few times. It worked really well.

When I jump off of those giant antennas and my parachute fails, I use the hook to catch a guy wire and zip line down to the ground safely. Then I awake from the dream and enjoy reality.

I like to use it when shaking "hands" with Captain Hook, you know, so he doesn't feel awkward and stuff.

But seriously, did Victorinox just need to come up with a new tool to take up space or something?
