image.jpeg (Trying to hold the trout and put it back in the water... Lol) My first ever rainbow trout. image.jpeg My son Oliver has been asking me to go fishing since the snow melted here in PA. He has been very persistent like any 5 year old. We belong to the local fish and game an headed there with our fishing rods. One being a Ron P. Pocket fishing rod that my grand father owned until his death in 2014 and now I have it. Anyways my son and I fished, I caught a few sun fish and a rainbow trout on the old pocket fishing rod. He caught one sun fish and at the end of the night got very discouraged. I prayed for one last fish, then all of the sudden he got a bite a big sun fish hit his trout magnet, under went the bobber and a big smile appeared on his face! What a great night!

Good for you Dad. I bet he remembers that fish forever.

By the way, it is best not to handle trout by grabbing them. It takes the slime off their skin, opening the to infection. Best to handle them by the jaw, if at all. Otherwise, eat ‘em. Good stuff for eating.

    What a great time! :dblthumb:
My dad had one of those pocket rods. I used to love fishing with that thing. Dunno what happened to it. I'd love to have one just for the nostalgia of it. :)

Aww the good old days of C.O.D. cash on delivery. I first saw the pocket fisherman on a episode of pawnstars and I have thought of getting one off of ebay but I would use it and I do not know if the ones one ebay are actual working ones.

I have tried to get my boys interested in fishing, not to long ago they wanted to fish but now it is boring to a 10 year old . Recently I saw my bobber go under and I made sure I had the fish hooked. I thought I had a perch due to the lack of a fight so I called one of my sons over and I gave him my rod and told him to pull it in. Turns out he had a hard time reeling it in (maybe I need to oil my reel) and it turned out to be a 10 to 12 inch catfish. As much as I want them to fish I know not to push them to do something they don't want to.

I remember when my other son was 5 or 6 years old and I was out on the lake fishing with my cousins husband and when we came back to the dock my wife told me that while we were out on the lake, my wife, sister and cousin were talking and my wife said she heard Mommy being called but as she was talking and she said hold on, only to hear Mommy again and once more hold on was her reply. Finally my son said Mommy I need you and all three immediately thought something was wrong and went to him to find out, that without them knowing about it my son decided to go back to the lake bulk head with his fishing rod to fish some more. He had placed the line into the water and when the bobber went under he reeled it in but when he pulled the perch he caught to the waters edge he could not pick it out of the water and needed Mommy, turned out to be a big blue gill.

One last thing 3 year old catches monster trout on spider man rod.

I was able to take my grandson out fishing. Once. He did fine, caught 4 bass, largest 18 1/2". But he's not into it since then. He was 8 at the time. Granddaughter went with me when she was 6, caught some baby sunfish at a park in Oshkosh. She, however, might want to go again. I learned that when fishing with kids I don't fish!

Congrats on a wonderful day! Hope your son caught the fishing bug!

Good point Blue! Applies to all fish, also lower lipping is not recommended as it put pressure on their innards! Best if you can just unhook em while still in the water!

Thanks for the fish handling data. I will make sure to treat them with more respect and teach my son as well. Till next time fish on!

I’m so glad to see you fishing with your son. I remember it well myself.
The fish handling is something that isn’t taught in schools, LOL. I had to learn it. Trout are especially fragile. Good eating too... :)

One of my treasured memories is of my first grandson and a catfish. We were on this lake, he was about 4 with his batman fishing pole. He laid on the ground and no sooner than his little hand came off of the rod it goes shooting across the ground into the water. The child was upset!!! after he calmed down some we were talking and his mother gets a bite, she reeles in a catfish of about 2lbs, then I noticed another line hanging out of it's mouth. So, I pull it in and got his fishing pole back Yea! grandpa. The child was happy!!!
