I agree to some extent, but I'm talking more about the guy who's obviously in shape, wearing the Arc Teryx Leaf jacket, 5.11 khakis, carrying a Grey Ghost pack, scanning his surroundings as he moves... that's the guy who likely has taken the steps necessary to ensure he doesn't become prey.
(please note that I own none of the above products, just an example)

But, it's also worth mentioning that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.

That uber-tactical looking person might have absolutely no skill to go with the look. Meanwhile, that non-threatening, hipster-looking guy might totally mess up your day.

I have a longtime friend who is without a doubt the badest dude I've ever met. He's exmilitary and may or may not still be a private contractor. When I've been around him he is always neatly groomed, and wearing a nice shirt and slacks. Even when working on family property he dresses smartly. He has a situation awareness that is downright spooky, and has the skills to survive almost anything. He has nothing to prove..but.
He's the last man you would ever want to be in a conflict with, armed, unarmed, whatever.

Sometimes tactical is practical. The whole pals/molle thing on packs is real handy for attaching stuff.
I bought Maxpedition and 5.11 in tan because I thought it looked less SWAT than black and less military than camo or OD.
Maxpedition had some bright colors for a while, I bought my daughter one in orange.
I wonder if the colors didn't sell, they stopped doing it.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the whole back and forth here. "I know a guy who is a bamf and he doesn't dress tactical"....."but I know a guy who is super uber bamf and he always wears 5.11's"

Translation, don't worry about what other people wear and don't assume things about people you don't know.

You could blend in with the millenials and wear sparkly camo tactical meggings

To a casual observation, the latest most expensive sophisticated gear could look formidable. But for serious scrutiny look for practical and well worn gear that implies a old pro not a poser. A well worn belt knife of common make, is move impressive than a high dollar custom knife that has never got dirty.
Above all look at the man. Does he look observant and aware of surrounding? Does the body language show confidence without effort?

I don't know why people claim we can only dress in a particular way in order to succeed. If you have a strategy to guide you to your destination you can employ whatever tactics and tactical-or-not clothing necessary to reach your goal.

Personally I try to get the most use out of my clothing no matter what others think. In my avatar I am wearing an Arcteryx softshell and it is one of my favorite jackets. If someone thinks I am a mountaineering poser for wearing that jacket, too bad for them.

Sorry! But it does make the point that being a gray man may require you to dress like the locals. ;)

One thing I like about the arid ATACs pattern: From a distance, it doesn't look like camo. It just looks like worn in material. I have an arid ATACs pattern boonie cap (typically use while mowing the lawn on sunny days) that I like because it just looks like a worn hat. But up close, it's obvious that it's patterned.

Donated a dozen Molle packs to a homeless shelter in lansing Michigan, will ride my bike thru there next summer to see if I can spot any.
Just because I wanted to see what happens. And there durable packs.

Maybe because some of it is cheaper, esp. the mil surplus? Lots of civilian stuff is overpriced IMO, just like a lot of stuff with “bushcraft” in the title. Or maybe cause they like it? Maybe cause its better suited to their type/style of activity?
