1. Due to the amount of SPAM from foreign countries lately, we have made the decision to manually approve all new members. While we regret that this must be done and the added time that it will take for new members to be approved, it is necessary at this time. We hope to have legitimate new members approved in a timely manner, no longer than a couple of hours. If the Administrators are online at the time, it can be as soon as a couple of minutes. Thank you for your patience.

OK, with all of the PA/NJ/NY/MD meetups that are scheduled for October, I opted to push this class back a few weeks to avoid people having to chose between dirt time and class time. Besides, I'm hoping to make it to at least one meetup myself this fall. All work and no play makes Sandcut a dull boy!

As such, the following is the announcement for this fall's WRFA class for folks within striking distance of northeastern PA.

Sandcut Outdoors is offering another Wilderness and Remote First Aid class for American Red Cross certification. The WRFA class will be held on Saturday and Sunday, November 4th and 5th, 2017 from 9 am to 6 pm each day.

An Adult CPR/AED class will be offered on Friday November 3rd, 2017 from 5 pm to 8:30 pm for those requiring the certification as a prerequisite for the WRFA class or for anyone requiring Adult CPR/AED certification.

The cost for the course is as follows:

Wilderness and Remote First Aid only - $180 (for those already holding an Adult CPR/AED certification

WRFA + Adult CPR/AED* - $225 (both courses bundled for a substantial cost savings)

Adult CPR/AED only - $90 (for those needing only CPR training)

    Class prerequisites:
Must be at least 14 years old
Must show proof of a current Adult CPR/AED certification *...

This class will be held at The Nature Conservancy’s Hauser Nature Center, located on Long Pond Road, Long Pond, PA.

Continuing education credits are available for this class from the American Red Cross for an additional fee for those who require the credits to maintain work or industry certifications. WRFA – 1.6 credits (16 hours), Adult CPR/AED – 0.3 credits (2.5 hours)

Reserved for information on special rates for hotels and camp sites for those folks that have to find a place to stay. I'm still waiting on some return calls.

That was a fantastic class for sure. I've had the opportunity to implement what I have learned several times already.

One of the big takeaways was the primary and secondary assessment techinques that have allowed me to gather useful information to pass along to more qualified first reponders when they arrive.

It also instilled a lot of confidence, well worth the reasonable cost.

Bumped for the holiday weekend to point out this one idea.

With the water from Hurricane Harvey still receding there have been many stories of people being injurred or killed. Reports on the news showed that 911 centers were receiving greater than 1,000 calls/hour in Houston. During a natural disaster like this, you don't need to be in "the wilderness" to benefit from learning about handling injury or illness in a delayed care setting. This training is geared toward providing care any time access to EMS is greater than 30 minutes.

The other main concept that is taught in this class is assessing scene safety before providing care. I just read a story yesterday of two men who were killed snd three others burned by a downed electrical wire while they were out rescuing stranded people. Learn to properly assess a situation before entering so that you don't become the next victim.

I can't stress the value of taking this class enough.

For those who are coming in from out of town, I am directing anyone who needs lodging for this class to the Comfort Inn Mt. Pocono. The manager, Anthony, agree to reduce room rates for students who mention that they are taking this WRFA class with Sandcut Outdoors.
The address is 3189 Rt. 940, Mt. Pocono, PA 18344. The phone number there is (570)839-9282
