When buying stuff in bulk don't be fooled by word games in advertising. Here is a classic example of words that mean nothing to your pocketbook.
    20%more.jpg
Yes 10 ounces are almost 20% more than 8 ounces. True as far as it goes; but it does not go very far. It’s really 9.6 ounces to be 100% accurate. So what? This container of soap as far as I can tell was not offered in a 6 ounce size and the 10 ounce size was the same price as last time I purchased it. They are implying that I’m getting 2 ounces more for the same price as what? What I paid before? Maybe they think I cannot remember what I paid in the past, and are assuming by telling me something true I’ll ignore that they are really just playing word games and not doing anything special for me. The old saying is figures can lie and liars can figure.

Yup been bitten there more than once. Now I go by gram per dollar. Cheese for example in various sizes and prices. 750 grams for $12 or two 300 gram at 5.99. Don't want to spend $12. But I do because it's a better deal. The one I love is. Buy one get the second half off. Fancy way of saying. If you buy two, we'll give you %25 off both.

Frequently the x% off the second one is because a dealer is trying to move old inventory and they want two items off their shelf. It’s not the price for them it’s the potential profit that the shelf space is tying up.

You mean they were selling before old and junky before?

Your absolutely correct. I worked in computer retail. Tech expires faster than fruit. I had a manager who refused to mark anything down. We had 1x's DVD writer for $600 beside a 16x's for $80. We had a planogram for exactly what and how products were on a shelf. In what order and so on. Everytime we got a surprise inspection from head office. We lost points for old product on the shelf. Funny enough the boss was always absent. When the inspections went down. I finally lost it on the district manager. Flat out told him. "You and my boss are both management. It's entirely unprofessional to get the peons caught up in your bickering." Store manager saved my job. DVD writer hit the bargain bin for $10.

I admire it when a store posts prices as cost per unit (pound, sheet or other unit).
It certainly does not solve every problem but it makes me feel better about the company.:45:

Grams per dollar is a good concept but will be lost on most Americans. The USA has a strange aversion to using international or metric units. :)

It goes without saying that a person has to be a savvy shopper.

I was in Walmart yesterday and in the clearance isle they had stuff being cleared out at the same price as normal? And some stuff on clearance for like a nickle or so off regular price. :) Funniest thing I've seen though, shopping with my ex for a hairbrush. She had found one for $12.00 or so, which was fine. As we were standing there I must have dropped something and bent down to pick it up. As I was getting ready to straighten up, I saw the identical brush at the bottom rack for about half the price of the one on the top rack . Identical. :)

    INCORRECT...

    10oz is 25% more than 8oz

    8 divided by 2 is 4(25%)

    8 plus 2 is 10

    therefore 10oz is 25% more than 8oz

& Zunga really got confused buying 750grams worth of widgets for $12 which is 1.6¢/gram when 600grams(two 300gram pkgs) would have been just one rch shy of 1¢/gram

the WORD GAMES really do get youz guyz bumfuzzled don't they ;-)

Same thing. Last time I bought jeans. Went in because they had levis on sale. One pair worked out to $60. Looked around. House brand, just as good imo. $12 each. I got 4.

if 2x300g equals 600g and adds up to $12, (5.99 each). 750g for $12 is 150 g more for $12. I'm confused for sure. Just not sure if I should be?

Then of course there's the dishonest customer. Try to switch labels and get a lower price. I was assistant manager at a store. We had individually wrapped paper towel. $.85 each. They came in a pack of 48 rolls. We kept them top shelf. They were labeled both whole pack price and individually for the stock crew. A customer grabbed the whole pack. Pealed off the whole pack price and demanded the whole thing for $.85. I got to the till after the call. Asked what the trouble was. Told here flat out. "Either your stupid or trying to scam me, either way get out! Now" she started to cause a scene. I told here I had her on camera (a lie) and it was being forwarded to all our stores (another lie) you lady are banned. She left swearing at me. LOL. $36 In paper towel for $.85. Not likely.

I've had customers from the UK working in stores. There tax is in the shelf tag price. If it says $5 that's what comes up on the till. Had some amusing disscusions on provincial and federal sale taxes. Here it's 7 and 7 %14.

It goes the other way too. I once picked a pair of pants off a table that had a sign saying 50% off the lowest marked price. They were marked down to 12.00 so I should have been charged $6.00. The cash register rang them up at their original price of $22.00. If I was asleep at the wheel I’d have paid that amount. But I stopped the cashier and mentioned the mistake. She doesn’t believe me, all but accusing me of replacing the tag. Her manager comes over and starts on the same vien. The store manager comes over and tries to tell me the price is 50 percent off the original price. Well that is $11.00, but they have a $12.00 dollar price tag and she’s trying to charge me $22.00. The three of them seem dumbfounded, they get the department manager who tells them they should be $6.00, and they start arguing with him—in front of me the customer. The store manager finally says well I guess he wins (meaning me) charge him the $6.00 and starts to walk away. I stopped her and asked if there was something she forgot. She’s like what are you talking about. I said you accused me of trying to steal from your store, in front of a not to insignificant crowd of shoppers, your wrong and I expect an apology.

It was not forthcoming. I left the pants there, along with a shopping cart full of expensive tackle. I’ve boycotted the place ever since. Mistakes happen I understand—but don’t disrespect customers, especially when the register and the store tags are showing two different numbers, and then man up and apologize when you are wrong. It was not like I had stuffed the item down my pants and was stealing it. I’d hate to see how they would have treated me then.

At least it was not saying 10 ounces for the price of 8 ounces a 20% savings. That is what they were implying I believe. There was no price savings at all; I guess the sticker was just there to catch a shopper’s attention.

I can tell you when I was a sales manager. Those staff would have got a talking to or even fired. I was taught that the image of the store in the eyes of the customer is everything! What should have happened. A staff member should have gone with you to where you found them. Even if the sign doesn't match the items on the table. As long as there are other jeans like the ones you brought to the till. You get the shelf price. I then apologize for the inconvenience. Order the staff to go over all shelf tags in front of you. I've even had customers say. "Well if I'm getting that price, I'll take a bunch." That's a judgment call on my part. If the difference wasn't huge. We generally allowed it. In big retail product turn over is more important than margin. With the experience I have. I don't get told by sales people. I do the telling. I have zero problem asking for a manager. Or simply walking out laughing and shaking my head.

I got the convience argument from UK tourists. "Isn't it easier to simply put total price including tax on the shelf sign." My answer. "Sure it is but wouldn't you like to know exactly how and who is sticking it to you?" Most tourist dont care. But it seems to easy to tack on some extra profit and call it included tax when the price is all in.
